Why not just keep the Army - Navy game like it is and not have it count as a conference game? In the unlikely event that either of those teams happen to ever be in contention for the conference championship and a playoff spot, then the Army -Navy game can either be an exhibition game or it could be postponed. I mean, they are changing every other tradition in college football after all...

I do think it makes a difference.Β  Back when I played there were "old timers" stopping by now and then and it was really cool and inspirational to hear some of their stories.Β  A long, deep rooted history is probably more important than most people realize.

During the WKU game last weekend the school was honoring the 50th anniversary of WKU's 1973 undefeated (regular season) football team. Many of the players (and at least one coach) from that 1973 team were staying at our hotel near campus. We chatted with a couple of them (awesome old guys by the way), and while having breakfast in the lobby, we overhead some of their tales from back in the day.

They were D2 back then, but I could tell that it was probably one of the best times of their lives. I may or may not have seen a few tears in those tough guys' eyes as they were saying farewell to their old buddies and teammates Sunday morning.

So, yes, history is very important, especially to those that made that history.

On a side note, I bet 2057 (and 2047) will be a pretty cool 50th reunion for USF football. πŸ˜‰πŸ€˜

  3. Stopped by the WKU bookstore and student union this afternoon. The stadium is directly across the street and looks like a pretty cool venue for college football. The WKU band was just finishing up practice on the field and were having some sort of pre-game day gathering on the lawn by the stadium. The WKU players were taking some on-field reps. Students were walking by going to and from classes I assume.Β

I couldn't help but imagine what that kind of scene will look and feel like on game weekends when our stadium is complete. It all just felt so college-like.Β

Hoping for a nice away team victory tomorrow to complete the picture. πŸ™‚πŸ€˜

That would be 16 wins (37%) and 27 losses lifetime total against those teams, not all of which were during their respective ACC years.... FSU (1-3), MIAMI (1-5), PITT (3-7), etc.Β  We could probably leave that part out of the marketing brochure and be no worse off. UNC is 0-2 against USF, and 'cuse is 2-8 against USF. In basketball, we're 1-10 against 'cuse. My point being, that I'm not sure how historical records would sway the decision for an invite one way or the other, given the number of factors that weigh into the decision-making process.Β

It may not sway an invite decision, per se, but it shows that USF has the potential to compete at that level. Sort of a "get your foot in the door" type thing. Imagine if USF had never beaten those teams. If that were the case, I think even our most positive fans would have doubts about USF's sports viability in a "higher" conference. Thankfully, our (very short) history does include some really nice wins against big-brand teams, which I think (in a small way) will help with the perception of USF as an expansion candidate going forward. Hopefully, we'll find out one day soon...
