Ther weren't in any of my projections. I still think if we go to 14 its Bosie State, Air Force and San Diego State, or if we go to 16 or start a new 14 tean conference (minus Tulsa and Tulane) its those 3 plus Colorado State and either Utah State or UNLV.

Trivia question.  Who was the first 1A program USF played?

Bonus question 1, who was the announcer?

Bonus question 2, what was some of the annoying stuff he said?

We did make a point of investing in athletics..... Woolard put about $70m into the new Soccer, Baseball/Softball stadiums, the Sun Dome renovation, and more. The reinvention of USF's "athletic village" was Woolard's crowning achievement...

USF made a concerted effort to invest in athletic facilities on campus for every single sport except the one that matters. Imagine where we could be now if Woolard made football a priority.

Can someone explain to me how we would have won more games if we spent more money on football?  Not being argumentative I just don't understand.

Seeing who people actually vote for, maybe the "dont discuss politics" saying is dated. It seems to contribute to close minded belief systems since those beliefs arent being challenged.

Politics is similar to sports in a way that once every 4 years some people just put on a politicians jersey and cheer for them regardless of actually talking through why. It's actually not hard to debate merits of different positions with people while being respectful. We do it here constantly with sports, and this stuff doesnt even matter.

Btw Corey our biggest problem was oline like you said. Nick Roberts is young and improving! Hes a capable rotational guy who could play 50% of the defensive snaps

I don't understand what you're trying to say here. I haven't the slightest interest to anybody vote for and if prefer to keep it that way.

if I want to open my mind to other people's political views I'll go to a political forum. There is no shortage of those.

  4. I am a bit of a Pollyanna.  I'll admit that.

Something about this hire feels different.  Maybe it was the speeches yesterday or the comments from the Clemson game idk.

This game is all about results so the proof is in the pudding but I'm excited about the program again and I wasn't sure if that was possible after the past decade.

I want to say it was a missed block on a kick return in the first half of the UL game in 09 no? Can't imagine it will be on a highlight but it if someone has the recording it may be possible to see. It's also very possible that the missed block what out of the shot all together.

Yea is was a missed block for sure.  I was just wildly curious for some reason.

Possibly. As teams got deeper into conference play, though, it's very possible that other teams' SOS may have propelled them past us. The only ranked team we played after hitting #2 was, ironically, a #23 UConn ....

^^^ This was what I was wondering about.  I know it was a crazy year and a bunch of teams (like U California and Boston) made it to #2 that year and then fell apart.

Going into the NC it was Ohio State, LSU, WVU and Missouri battling it out.

WVU and Missouri had late season losses and that dropped them from contention.

I think we would have been jumped by LSU (Ohio State was #1 most of the year including week 7 when we were #2).

LSU (11–2)  with wins over (#9 Virginia Tech, #12 South Carolina, #9 Florida, #18 Auburn *same as us*, #17 Alabama, #14 Tennessee).

Hawaii was 12-0 with a win over a ranked Boise (17)  before losing to Georgia in the Sugar Bowl.

    Anything, interesting conversation.

I'm not sure I buy the nonsense of "lose to anyone any given week"... Leavitt NEVER lost to a team as bad as UConn this year after we moved into the BE. I think there was a bad Army loss in there, but, in a transition year.

In 2006, our worst loss was to a 6-6 Kansas team. Cincy was second with 5 losses, 4 of which were to ranked teams

In 2007, all 4 of our losses were to teams ranked inside the top-20 at some point in the season. The regular season losses were all single-digit losses.

In 2008, we lost to UL (5-7), bad loss. Other losses were to teams that were 8-5 or better

In 2009, we lost to 3 ranked teams, an 8-5 UConn, and 9-4 Rutgers

    Then don't buy it.

I think you made my case nicely anyway.

Recruiting was trending up. Those teams lacked depth. We lost to Rutgers in 2007 after a starting offensive lineman was injured. Grothe was sacked 9 times.

Leavitt won more games against tougher opponents than the other USF coaches combined. Count up those ranked teams he beat and you’ll see it’s more ranked wins than we’ve had since.

As DC at Colorado Leavitt’s defense was the best in the PAC-12.

He had us bowling every year. He sure as hell wouldn’t have done any worse than Holtz, Taggart (year 1 and 2) or Strong.

I was discussing CJL with my 12 yo at the game this year.  I said imagine having a chance to win against ANY opponent no matter who it was.  He was like "whoa!!!".

Followed up by, imagine the same team could lose to any opponent (like UCONN this year).

"That's what it was like when CJL was coach"

It was exciting though.  The sole has been sucked out of me the past 10 years since.  I miss the way that felt.

Oh I agree...I am not necessarily married to the concept of someone staying. I just posted that if we hire young and that person leaves it means we were successful. I guess my concern is that we are 500 in hiring people getting a string of those correct may be long odds relative to our track record. But so be it. No retreads please.

    We are in complete agreement.

I almost think programs in our situation have to become adept at hiring up and comers.

“Best chance” not guaranteed that he would stay...

I just feel like this is a somewhat defeatist attitude.

So we are looking for a unicorn?  I say we hire someone who will leave in a couple of years.  We need a string of those.
