Fair enough, I was just building off michibull's point.  I am happy that we picked the best QB to fit their system.  We will have a better idea on Saturday.

Which is maybe one reason CCS chose Barnett. If CCS and Gilbert prefer to run a pro style offense, and they feel they have the personnel to run it to their standard, why wouldn't they pick the QB that is most qualified to do it? Why would a HC and OC run an offense they are not comfortable with?

I think this makes a lot of sense.  We always seem to have access to dual threat QB's and perhaps rely of them due to OL troubles we have.  My memory might be fuzzy but I believe our last two HC's preferred pocket passing and even tried to convert the talent we had to fit that scheme to no avail.

It seems that now that we have a so called pocket passer Gilbert will get to implement the system he wants.  That does not say the BK or CO were not solid passers from the pocket.  I really haven't seen enough to know their strengths and weaknesses.

My only knock on Kean was that he did not seem to provide a spark on the few occasions he was in the game.  Someone compared his HC career to Grothe or something but Grothe was special the moment he stepped on the field.

**** that's a name I haven't heard in awhile. I played against him in high school (basketball). Dude tried to dunk on me, almost jumping over me. I fouled him hard and almost got kicked out. I didn't mean to foul the guy but I was not letting his nuts hit my face!

LOL, for me and probably others on the boards it does not seem like that long ago.

While you were avoiding getting nutsacked these boards were much like they are today, filled wit crotchety old men hanging on every word of David Glaser while he drove across state to Cornelius's signing ceremony where he pulled out an UF cap.

Deceptively fast.  Some of those guys had a decent angle on him and he trucked on by.

Man he did look pretty quick running around I wonder how his speed compares to now.

I'm really just glad he is not a tree.  Looks like he is not afraid to pull the ball down once in a while.

Everyone is referring to him as a pocket passer, which he is, but the kid is an athlete I'll give him that. thanks

I was a Chris O fan but I'm pretty excited about this kid.  The dude is a 5 start QB, something we've never come close to in the past.

I'm old enough to remember striking out again and again on guys like Cornelius Ingrim and Brent Schaeffer only to have to settle for Pat Julmiste.

Carlton Williams and Ford were phenomenal athletes but there were reasons they fell to us in those days.  That was true for many of our star players back then.  They all had something going on, whether grades or possibly work ethics that the bigs picked up on and passed on them.

What is our biggest knock against this guy? He got beat out at Alabama by Jalen Hurt?  Umm ok, I can live with that.

  5. What he said is true but I am not sure how necessary it was to say it.

If it was Doug or Judy I see his point but put it in context, who asked him that question, some starry eyed fan at his first press conference?  Some provocative A-hole reported trying to get a soundbite?

I would rather FSU struggle because their fans annoyed me a few years ago in the stands.  I just like to think of those people crying in their beers once in a while.  I am petty that way but that is what fans do I think.

xCWT has no interest to me anymore.

People here asked what he as accomplished, has he ever coached a team that was #2?  Has he one a championship or a bowl as HC?  Those are fair questions after a quote like this.  I mean  pointing things like that is only the "truth" right?

That being said, he did turn around WKU and USF and that is pretty impressive.  The question still remains is has he learned enough to take a program to the next level?  Will the fans give him enough time to accomplish his rebuilding?

FSU will want to win now, they are not as much as a rebuilding effort that he excels at.  It is a good test, of which I have almost no interest in the outcome.

I've seen all these guys play QB... I've had the good fortune of being able to follow Barnett.  I'll just let this season tell you what I saw.  He got a raw deal and didn't think things through... this kid is a different kind of talent.

I have really only seen Kean (and I am sorry but he reminds me of Bench) so how would you compare and contrast Brett with the other two?

  7. 16 hours ago, Bull Dozer said:

Brett said he has text message screen caps between the victim and Urban's wife.   The alleged abuser said in an interviewer that Myer knew about the accusation as well.  McMurphy also may have more than he's letting on as he didn't let the cat out of the bag on most of his Intel until after Meyer denied any knowledge about this at all....

Is someone making the argument that Urban's wife received a text message like that and did not share it with Urban?

I go to movies when I want to suspend disbelief to that level.  Personally, I am not sure how much responsibility Urban has in this situation but it was likely in his contract.  The stuff that happened at Penn state and the way people knew about what was going on and did nothing has driven a lot of this.

He is getting paid a lot of money, he has a lot of power and he is one of the most visible faces of the university.   With that comes certain responsibility I suppose and they are innumerated in his contract.

Most HC contracts have morality clauses and "conduct detrimental to the university" outs in them these days.  Pretty sure knowingly having a domestic abuser on your staff would violate those clauses.

Yup, Ohio State can go the sensitivity training route if they think Urban Meyer is worth it.

Personally, that is the route I would go. Two weeks of, "Urban, if you hear of these abuses you must report it to the authorities"

I remember the good old days where prying into people’s personal lives was fround upon. Fences make good neighbors. Now apparently it’s a company’s job to police their employees lives, who seriously wants this and why?

This all stems from what happened at Penn State so I assume they all have it in their clauses now to report any kind of abuse involving their staff.

  9. I came across this article a couple of days ago and was wondering what folks thought about the viability of Florida Poly

The article outlines a tragic story where they are cutting resources (in this case the only mental health resource) for some reason

"Since the end of the spring semester, the university has laid off a string of employees, citing organizational changes. But faculty union members insist the cuts largely target employees who’ve spoken up about ethical issues and other problems."

It just got me thinking about their viability.  Does anyone know ow they are doing?

To keep this relevant for the athletic forum, if they were to survive they would be even closer than UCF and twice the acrimony.

I am pretty sure mine stems from a missed summer class as well.  Rutgers had something everyone referred to as the "RU Screw" and they definitely would put a big fat F on your transcripts and make it impossible to do anything about.  Basically they liked to screw you over as much as possible, I have no idea why.

USF was not at all like that plus the girls were much prettier.  Being married I didn't notice any of that of course, its just something I heard.

    1. You don't turn down a former 5 star who was in a QB battle at Bama.

    2. The best QB in school history just graduated and there was nothing left in the cupboard to get excited about.

    3.  The is a chance for an opening at GT or another P5 in the SE and another 10 win season might score a bigger payday.

Originally I have not read much into this.  For me it would be -

    4. If a 5 star at any position wants to come here you take him.  Especially if he can contribute right away.

With all the business going on with Kean I think this was a great move for CCS to bring this guy in.  I don't necessarily thing we have nothing to get excited about at the QB position before this move.  I think we have unknowns and coaches like to minimize risk.

OMG. I have the same recurring dream! Except I forgot about a class and it's my last semester and I can't graduate because of it.

This must be common.  I have that dream all the time.  I'm supposed to graduate and my family is coming to the ceremony.  It is the day before the final, but since I have not been showing up for class, I didn't get the news that the final had been moved up a day and I miss it.  It's crazy real, too.

LOL, there must be some common reason for that kind of dream.  I have the same related dream for the army.  They call me up and tell me I am still on active duty.

I am no shrink but I feel like these were stressful environments that are no longer applicable.  My conscious mind knows it is not important anymore but my subconscious isn't so sure.  Every once in a while it kicks out a dream to double check.

Given how the amount of stress this is causing and impacting to his career I bet Kean will join the forgotten college class dream club someday.

I guess you got me. Upon looking back through Bond's timeline of how he worked through this story, he does not specifically say "USF sources" but he does specifically say he talked to Kean. So at this point, there are three sources that may or may not be USF sources and Kean himself.

So the dispute in question seems to be whether or not Kean will serve the entire suspension, part of it, or his "unique" appeal he's counting on makes it none. But today, it's a 4 game suspension.

This just tells me Kean is not my starter.

I agree.  He wants to be the starting QB he really needs to have all his ducks in a row.

On a side note, even as a middle aged man I still have a recurring dream where I signed up for classes and never attended or forgot all about them.  The dream always starts the day of the final and me wondering what affect it will have on me grade point average.

We don't know any of them, do we? Have any conferences that have expanded, or talked about expanding, ever come out with any sort of metrics list. I think that's a list cobbled together by message boards and speculating media/bloggers.

What kind of fool would come on a message board if he didn't already know everything there is to know?

I certainly do know.  This all got me thinking this afternoon so I compiled a list of all the criteria and metrics that determine a school's P5 worthiness.  I fed them into the mainframe at work.  It wasn't easy getting time on that thing.  The hardest part was tweaking the metrics just so to give what I think is a pretty precise formula.

I ran the algorithm several times and posted the results.

I guess you can find what you want on wiki.  This says, and being from the area I always thought, that Rutgers v Princeton was the first.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1869_college_football_season

Exactly, neither game resemble football today.

Rutgers has a better claim to National Champion then UCF.

The first ever college football national championship was awarded retroactively to the two teams. Princeton was named the champion by the Billingsley Report and the National Championship Foundation, while college football research historian Parke H. Davis named Rutgers and Princeton co-champions. Various other ratings and retrospectives have rated the teams differently.

While that may be true, it's also apparent that they are not weighted equally:

Attendance - I agree, this is a huge problem, but with our recent OOC additions this should get better.  We still out draw Duke, Kansas, Vandy, and Wake and are within 10% or Oregon St, Cuse, and Wazzou.

Market Size - We're the 16th largest market

Geography - Well, the only conferences that we are already in the geographic footprint are the SEC and the ACC.  The Big 12 would have to want to get into Florida.

Academics - I think were pretty good there as compared to the P5 schools

Student body size/Alumni base- We're one of the largest schools in the country.

Tradition - Yep, we don't have any to speak of.

Facilities - We're probably middle of the road on overall facilities.  I know we don't have an OCS, but neither dose Pitt or Miami.

So, the only things that we can change are Attendance and Facilities, and even then, we still would have to be wanted by another conference.

I agree, they are a not all equal.

As you said, even if we exceeded Wake Forrest or Vandy in every category it would not guarantee an invite.

Being a directional school is one issue as well as being in the same state as FSU, Miami and UF.  They would not want to share leagues.

  17. 47 minutes ago, Apis Bull said:

MMW, everyone knows why the teams that are in the P5 are there and a lot of them is not because of what they've done on the field.  I'll state my point once more.  Even if we went 13-0 for five straight years, there is no guarantee that we would be invited to a P5 conference.  It might be likely, but not for sure.  There are no define metrics that we, or any other G5 for that matter, can satisfy that would get us into a P5 conference.  I'm not saying that we deserve to be in a P5 conference based on our on-field results at the moment, just that it wouldn't matter anyway.

I think that is because there are many metrics that need to be satisfied and we have some covered but not all.  Some of these programs were grandfathered in and that is a metric as well.

After nearly 2000 pages we all know them:

    • Attendance
    • Market Size
    • Geographic location (proximity to rivals or other league members)
    • Academics
    • Student body size/Alumni base
    • Tradition
    • Facilitates (including OCS)

Notice I didn't add on the field performance which would be why Boise was never asked and Rutgers was.  Boise had the performance but few, if any, of the others.  So I guess we agree.

We are also hindered by the directional school stigma.  It could possibly be a deal breaker for some leagues.

To those who say that we have better attendance that a few grandfathered bottom feeders, I would say that is meaningless.

  18. 16 minutes ago, Bear said:

    Rutgers is a prime example

How are we any better that Rutgers?  They are benefiting from their location and market size just like a lot of people around here are proposing we do.

If we are asking to be placed in a league based of on the field results our wish has been granted.

Rutgers has better academics and location that we do.

For what it is worth they might be a sucky history but only one team can say they won the  first college football game ever played about 150 years ago.

  19. 1 hour ago, Apis Bull said:

That's not the point.  Well, at least not my point.  My point is that you can't earn your way to the top conferences of college football.  A group of schools, including those that have not performed as well as we have decide whether they want you in their club or not and it has very little to do with on the field results.

They earned that by being founding members decades before USF was even a school.  They have built up relationships and rivalries that drive attendance and tradition most within driving distance.

Other than on ESPN or on a chat board, who would be talking about and talking smack over Kansas or ISU vs USF?  Who would care?  Nobody because we are not national teams.

I think it would be great if we could play in an regional Florida league.  It would be great for attendance and possibly even recruiting as high school kids can continue playing each other at the next level.  Would anyone care at the national level?  Nope.  But it would be a better fan experience.
