  1. The only thing he said that I take issue with is "I hope USF honestly shows up with the belief they’ll win."

They better show up that way!

I also feel he is not as sure of himself as his bravado suggests "The Bulls might be able to keep it interesting because the game is in Tampa, it’s on their home field, the weather will be hot in their favor but none of it will be enough."

Kind of feels like he is setting up excuses.

Don't get me wrong, I agree that they will most likely manhandle us but I am a fan and am prepared to lose my voice over every first down.

Butler, Creighton, Depaul, Marquette don't fit the bill, but the other 6 do. The problem is that they are essentially doing so at the expense of a football program that they have invested tens of millions of dollars into (including a stadium). If they truly have studied the subject and think that they will raise more money from donations by making the switch, then it will likely balance out financially and they will have the benefit of playing games that are more regionally appealing. It isn't like the basketball programs were struggling to get fan support even with the AAC schedule. I understand they were left on a geographic island, but to pull the trigger without having a plan for the football team makes the decision baffling. I venture to guess they will struggle mightily to schedule a full slate of games for the 2020 season.

I guess they see the writing on the wall and are moving in another direction.

It is a shockingly bad decision. I could understand if the Big East were light-years ahead of the AAC, but that just isn't the case. The conference is slightly better in basketball over the past 5 years and probably not better aside from Villanova. Their football program will now languish as an independent. From what I can gather, the Big East TV deals work out to around $5 or 6 million per school, so it isn't as if they are receiving more money out of it either. Sure, travel costs will be reduced somewhat for Olympic sports, but other than that and renewing a few traditional rivalries, I just don't get it.

I actually get it.  They want to play schools that their fans actually have heard of or care about - and not necessarily in football.  There are plenty of people from Big East schools sprinkled throughout the North East (at work, the gym, in the neighborhood) that can foster rivalries and drive interest.  It is like the opposite of what Boston College did (but I understand their decision as well at the time as well).

    I applaud them.

This was a really interesting article.  I was expecting to come away feeling one way and the opposite happened.

These schools were looking out for the welfare of their students and did not wish to get into an arms race with one school that was double in size and spending twice as much.

My avatar is of my son playing lacrosse in a rec league.  The games are competitive and they have an overall champion at the end of the year based on standing and outcomes from the jamboree.  That being said there is also a travel league that is hard core with kids that want to get a scholarship and make a career professionally out of playing lacrosse*.

The goals of both leagues are totally different and when a travel team (and this does occur) joins a rec league to fill in time on their schedule it tends to ruins it for everyone else in the rec league.  These kids are cherry picked from across the region and play all year round an the games are not competitive.  It turns into a glorified practice for the travel league team.

*You can't make a career out of lacrosse that was partially in jest but I am not sure anyone ever told these people.

I’m just more self aware. Like Ralph Ellison said “I yam what I yam”.

Yes Popeye said it first but the context was not the same.  I'm chalking this up as true convergence.

An unlikely place for an Ellison quote so props to @puc86

.......how long did you say you were away.  Were you stranded on a deserted island like Tom Hanks (messing with ya).

    That about describes it.

I think the secondary will be better just because they have a legitimate coach now ...

Anyone want to tell Tom Hanks who our new coach is and why is he legitimate?

There are several threads on this topic.  The bottom line:

    • The Basketball team had the biggest turnaround (record wise) than any other team in America
    • The Basketball team is young and only getting better, along with having a coach that seems to be a difference maker as far as player development, team fundamentals, etc.
    • The Football team - I think the optimism mostly stems around having seemingly a more dynamic OC in Kerwin Bell.  The play calling (at first glance) is more creative and puts players in position to make plays.  There is a pretty large playbook that the players have to learn.
    • The Football team - overall could possibly be benefiting of the various changes in the assistant coaches (defense included).
    • The Football team - Recruiting seems to be a little bit on the uptick, and the Transfer portal thingy is helping us too.

Oh I forgot to add - The Basketball team actually won a post-season championship trophy for the first time since we won the Sun Belt Championship like in 1990 or something......It is only the CBI, but for us to win anything and get a trophy is significant, and it was an exciting tournament, had everything from us coming back from a 25 point deficit to win, and a 3 game championship where we won Game 1 basically at the Buzzer, and won Game 3 in DePaul's house to win it.......Again all key players are young and will be back and better.

Thanks Jonesy.  Yea I saw some of the threads but I was looking for a recap of everything like you just did.

How is the transfer portal helpful?

  8. So, I have been out of town for several months on business and so busy I have been completely out of touch.  I would say this began right after the bowl game and wan't even aware that we got a new OC or  that Chris O has transferred.

Last night I checked on the board for my usual dose of doom and gloom but came away confused.  After checking the URL several times I noticed that the basketball program won something call the CBI and others downright optimistic over what they saw in the spring game and recruiting.

Can someone give me their take on the state of things as they see it?

Actually he was fired for interfering in the investigation and not the slap. Not saying he did not deserve it but if you don’t think we weren’t already looking for an exit plan for Jim you are sadly mistaken. Jim just provided the ammo to make it easy.

Jim seemed to reach a plateau and there was some grumblings.

CCS has not hit a plateau as far as we know.

For all the knocks on the coaching staff, we have made the necessary adjustments at halftime to win these games. The problem is the first half play calling/game plan and execution. 7-7 at the half against UCONN (after being held scoreless for 29:13 by the worst defense in the country) is unacceptable. That has nothing to do with fear. It has to do with watching the games unfold before our eyes. UMASS and UCONN should have been games where we were up big early in the third quarter and we were getting our backups some in-game experience.

I have said repeatedly that I am thrilled that this team is 7-0. We easily could have been 4-3 at this point of the season given the attrition on both sides of the ball. We have built a ton of character, grit, and resolve over the first 7 games of the season. Now, it is on the players and the coaching staff to put it all together for 60 minutes. We will have to bring our A game to at least 4 of the 5 remaining games in order to reach our ultimate goal of the AACC game. We have yet to play for 60 full minutes. We have yet to see our team's A game. It isn't fear, it is frustration and concern.

My concern is that they did too deep a hole that they can't recover in time.

Fair enough, I understand your point. I for one was not arguing the feminization point. I was just trying to explain what Bausfkid was saying. I can agree that you want to look good and respectable, but I would still disagree with comparing a sports fashion uniform to an actual uniform that means distinction or honor. There is so much more meaning to it. The color of a beret means something, something you earned and demands respect from everyone, black and lime green football uniforms mean nothing.

    Fair enough.

Ah the ole 'switch a roo' quip that ignores what I said...I guess I'll say "har har" in response.  Thing is I never said the coaches weren't winning games or couldn't.

What I *was* saying was that if Strong thinks one reason we didn't have a complete game is because 'the kids were wearing new uniforms', then it shows he is focused on addressing the wrong (non-existent) problems this team has.

I got what you were saying and answered accordingly.

I find it hilarious that CCS  has to come up with any excuses at all.  We are not playing great due to youth or distractions or whatever.  It happens.

I recall the team under Leavitt getting distracted by rankings and losing focus during the Rutgers game.  We got distracted by the bowl activities under Leavitt and Taggart and losing.

These are young kids and a young team overall and they get distracted by things.  The import thing is they are winning.  Hopefully it will last.
