Wait, I thought AAU status was a waste?

Basketball has been a really nice surprise. We've assembled the list of positive things that USF has going for it AAU, OCS, bowl game blow out, top recruiting class etc but the men's basketball was not on any of my lists.
IF we get into the tournament and survive a round or two what a shot in the arm.
What if we win the AAC in basketball and football in the same year?
We are honestly looking very attractive.

We need to win the conference and see how far we get in the tournament.
We are really good fans, rooting for teams that have never actually won any championships, just have shown flashes.
Sheriff, your thread positive, I clicked on it because I was happy to see it - and it's great.
It then made me think how low our bar is.

Their best regular season was 1975-76 when they had a .706 winning percentage. If they win two more games, they will beat that. Their best tournament run was in 2012. I guess the question is what do you call the best season? Was it that? Was it winning the CBI?
Open ended question based solely on your opinion.

I only started following USF when the football program started. I have heard you guys wax poetic over the years so I would love to hear your take now.

Do we have any interest in being in the Pac X? If UCONN and USF join we are both prior BCS schools. Might carry some weight.

+ invest in the Greek community. Grow it by 100% and build mansions (not the school-owned shithouses they have now). Tailgating will be across the street from Greek (and more than likely, spill over into it), we need some nice big homes and tailgates there.
I am a little old to be tailgating outside a fraternity house.

Heck yeah I remember most of those places. Peabody’s was fun too. Bulls Club. Gumby’s Pizza. The OCS should help improve the nightlife imo.
43 minutes ago, Mike Stuben said:Yeah, Peabody's is still hanging in there, but I can add Goodfellas to the list, it was in the same plaza as Peabody's and long gone.
I remember the name Bulls Club, but don't think I ever went there.
I have a great Gumby's story back around 1997, I was working on my MBA, that particular year we had lots of French exchange students in the MBA program. 6 person group project, where we would meet and work for 20 minutes, followed by 2 hours of drinking. We order Gumby's, the delivery person is from Haiti, the French students go wild because he looks like Yannick Noah. They invite him to come in and drink with us. He abandons his deliveries and brings in all the pizzas in his car and stays for hours, right in the middle of his shift.
Peabody's is great but not really what I consider a college bar. Heck I still go there something and I am 100 years old.
Personally, I think UF's offcampus situation sucks as well but mainly because things are old but it is still worlds ahead of USF. FSU has a lot going on, maybe too much. I have kids at both schools and it is interesting to compare.
For example, when the hurricane was coming, FSU said they would have sandwichs and ice cream (lol, whatever) available if the dining hall close. UF told my daughter and 30,000 students to head over the the publix to stock up and good luck! I am paraphrasing.

Hopefully the USF OCS helps improve night life. I believe they said there were going to be restaurants, bars, shops just outside the OCS. Plus I plan on staying on campus Friday through Sunday during home USF games so I will do my part to help the night life lol
Yea, I think it can also host concerts and also reall make the homecoming parade kick ass. We used to attend parade every year when the kids were little and it was fun but it could really be special.
I honestly think, a thriving night life, OCS and a few other things could really make USF a fantastic destination school with great academics.
On the light rail topic. I brought my son to visit Rutgers a couple of years ago with my son. We were staying in NYC and we took a 1 hour train ride to New Brunswick. It was a HUGE plus for my alma mater. He wound up staying in florida but it was a tough decision. If we can get a light rail to downtown and or St Pete and or the beaches and wow that would be great for USF.

Yes I agree. And I’m not saying that as anything against St Pete as I think that area is great too regarding nightlife. I’m saying it because the new stadium should be more centrally located. Heck a new Rays stadium by the casino would work too. Eventually Tampa Bay will have a rail system that will help connect all areas since it is pretty spread out. The new Howard Franklin Bridge will have a spot for the future rail system.
Yea, way too spread out. A light rail would be a hug benefit to the area. A USF to channelside/downtown would even make me rethink how much USF's offcampus nightlife sucks.

I'm going to respectfully disagree. I would have said that about St. Pete a couple years ago, but Tampa has now closed the gap. It's just a bit more spread out. So many bars and restaurants on, or a short walk from the Riverwalk and streetcar line, Water Street, Sparkman, etc. The Rays should be in Ybor at the end of the channel.
6 minutes ago, Bull94 said:when darryl shaw and cascade(gates) get done with developing it won't even be close.
I hope you guys are right. Tampa has improved but was just in St Pete for first Friday and there was a very very good ACDC cover band playing for free in jannus landing, there was another band playing on Central. The restaurants were packed.

I’m still going to be surprised if the Rays end up settling for St Pete. I do believe they will end up in Tampa when it is all said & done.
That would be cool I guess but I am not a fan of paying for it either. That being said, downtown St Pete is lightyears ahead of where downtown Tampa is as far as nightlife.
My big problem, perhaps my only problem with USF is that its off campus situation sucks. I realize that USF is not in a college town but there is ZERO night life activities off campus. We are forcing the students to get in a car to go to the stadium or to Ybor or wherever they go. It is not a walkable university and it should be. Maybe with the new stadium the area will pick up.

I really feel good about expansion/realignment now.
A year ago, we were hopeful but really only had 2 things:
Tampa's market
Potential
One year later we have:
Turned around football program.
Dominant bowl win over P4 program.
Best G5 recruiting class.
AAU Status
Turned around basketball prgram.
Signature basketball win over top 10 program on national tv.
Tampa's market
Potential
Bring it on.

Just a guess, but I believe @MMW is referring to the model UCF set when they decided to make football a priority. The same priority Golesh talks about since he was hired, from the top down. USF, IMO, had zero intentions of building an OCS until UCF left us wishing we had done something sooner.
Yes that is what I was trying to say.

I understand you're just fishing for engagement at this point, and I probably don't need to tell you this, but Mormon U has a national following and had the capacity to draw a livable media contract until such time as they were invited to a bigger conference. We'll get no such contract and would wither and die on the vine. Even in the AAC and with our football progrum in the sh-tter, our overall athletic program has been in the top 80 nationally and I believe was as high as 68 or 69 a year or two ago.
A closer comparison might be UCONN but they have a much higher profile stemming from their basketball program.
What should we have done differently? Hire better? Invest in facilities sooner (including OCS).
Sadly, the school we should have modelled after (or beaten to the punch) was UCF.
We were highly critical at the time of the moves they were making, like the bounce house. We kind of scoffed at them. We were wrong.
That being said it is never too late. If we have a great year and win the AAC and have an imminent shiny new stadium we might get lucky.
Three years of that success with sell out crowds works for me.

Agreed, I do not think we even need to win the CCG this season, but to be ranked in the top 25 by EoS would be great. Have a nail biter with Miami and put up a respectable showing against Bama. All the while putting up big offensive numbers and big defensive improvement. Get USF talked about again, all season long.
I kind of feel like we do. Not for any reason other than we never have.

We would have to beat Alabama at home to reach 11 imo.

What did the best USF MBB Season look like?
in USF South Florida Bulls Athletics
Posted
Thanks Brad.
Would you guys rather win the AAC and be slightly lower ranked or finish midlevel of the old BE with a higher rating at the end of the season?
