He's still listed on the roster. As for sitting out this season and playing next, he'd need to petition the NCAA for a sixth year of eligibility due to injury/illness. I'd like to think they would grant it, but you never can tell (see also: Johnson, Scott).

He's trying to sell a product that nobody wants. There was never any demand for a new football team in this area. Certainly not in Miami-Fort Lauderdale, where they're playing their games. The market is saturated. And FAU has no existing fan base. Orlando and Tampa aren't overrun with existing pro teams and higher-profile college programs like Dade/Broward is. As for FIU, I have a hard time believing that S&A fees are all that's needed to pay the program's expenses. Football is expensive. Great for them if it is, and if the students are committed to paying it, but that gets to be a tough sell after awhile.

I've got Adelphia, which is one of the ESPN360 cable providers, but I have no idea how I'd go about recording the game. Can anyone give me some pointers?

Those Pitt fans are strange. They're not really arrogant, but they don't seem to assign much importance to the actual results of football games. Their fall from Top 25 to 1-4 has had very little effect on their opinion of their team, at least when they're talking about which future games they think they will win or lose. The predictions/comparisons on their board sound like they were written in July. Most Pitt posters think they're going to just blow through Cincinnati, USF, and Syracuse like they're not even there. You'd have no idea that the team that is supposed to do this is the one we all saw play terrible football against Ohio and Rutgers on recent Friday nights. As to the 2001 USF game, even now you'll see that one cited as the worst loss in Pitt history (Ohio?), and as proof that Walt Harris (with whom their online fans seem to have a Seth Greenberg-like relationship) needed to go. Apparently nobody in Western Pa. noticed that USF ended up a bowl-eligible 8-3 in 2001, making the defeat slightly less humiliating. The other odd thing about their fans is their pathological need to have "Pitt guys" in the program. They like Dave Wannstedt because he's a Pitt guy. They like Matt Cavanuagh because he's a Pitt guy. Never mind that Dolphins and Ravens fans, respectively, were thrilled to see them leave. You get the feeling some of these Pitt fans would rather lose with Pitt guys than win with out-of-towners. For that reason, there is surprisingly little anger towards the coaching staff. There are those who think Wannstedt's done a poor job, and/or should not have been hired in the first place, but they're a serious minority, and usually get run off the board for daring to suggest it. Very, very odd if you ask me.

Actually, I was impressed you had that picture. Sure did make the point. Anyway, no hard feelings. I just think this whole subject is silly. I don't think anyone should get their noses out of joint about what a victorious opponent calls at the end of a decided game. Especially if the backups are in. Not only do they get few chances to shine, but garbage time is important to get your underclassmen (and future seniors/starters) involved.

Good Christ. Now I'm being accused of doing a hatchet job on the Bulls. Mike, I was trying to show EXAMPLES of things that COULD be taken the wrong way by an opposing fan. The point, which apparently you missed entirely, is that you can find this sort of thing in ANY game if you look hard enough. And if you're trying to hold me to a standard of fairness, you didn't do a very good job of that either. I did include the kneeldown at the end of the UofL game. I also omitted the non-kneeldown at the end of the UCF game, even though it would have bolstered the point you think I was trying to make. I can't work out if Roodly Prophete is a walkon or if he got a scholarship. I'm guessing either (a) he's a walkon, or ( Prophete got Prekivicus' scholarship. There are 14 players on the roster, including Prophete, Bradley Mosley, and Chris Capko. AFAIK Capko is still a walkon.

The best I can figure out, the bowl that loses its "anchor team" to the national title game will draw the short straw, since they'll have to fill both slots in their game instead of just one. The anchors are: Rose - Pac-10/Big Ten Sugar - SEC Fiesta - Big XII Orange -ACC/Big East That would be the Fiesta Bowl if Texas goes to the Rose, or the Orange Bowl if the ACC champ goes to Pasadena. Whichever game loses its "anchor team" to the Rose Bowl would be the most likely destination for the Big East champ. But I still think Sugar Bowl may decide to bite the bullet and invite the Big East champ, since their bowl is messed up anyway with the Superdome being unusable.

Yeah, I wish we had the senior leadership for the first go-round in the Big East. Oh well, maybe it'll force the incoming class to grow up faster.

We were still trying to score VERY late in our games against against both UCF and Louisville.

I still say PJ showed signs of growth as a real QB in the UofL game. I'm willing to chalk the poor showing at Miami up to UM's defense, and perhaps the game environment. Let's see how PJ does in Big East games, none of which will pose the challenge that the Canes did.

Let's keep this about FAU. You can't spend your way into athletic prosperity. If you could, we'd all be FAU's beeotch. They've got a pile of money from wealthy local donors, an athletic facility that is the envy of schools 100 places higher on the NCAA food chain, and what has it gotten them? They had to threaten litigation to get into I-A at all. They have no fan base. Attendance is pathetic despite massive giveaway programs. Their pipe-dream 40K-seat domed facility is not a serious plan. And if you've noticed, they just lost to Louisiana-Monroe and are at or near the very bottom of I-A.

Here's why we have bowl talk: 1. It's a bye week. Not much else to talk about, unless you want to rehash previous topics. 2. Various major media sources are projecting USF into a bowl game. So the USF fan base isn't completely making it up. 3. A bowl game would be HUGE for this program, so it's only natural that fans want to talk about it.

I don't like to move posts unless they're intrusive, but this is so much a "State of Florida" topic that it really should be moved there. Doing now.

Yeah, really. I watched the Pitt-Rutgers game, and Rutgers didn't impress me. In fact, they got so ultraconservative in the third quarter and had so much trouble finishing, that I thought Wannstedt was coaching both teams. It is a road game, however, and may be important to RU's postseason aspirations as well. There are no gimmes.

In fact, I want to elaborate on what MikeG said. I know that Julmiste-bashing is in vogue, but let's take a step back for a moment. Despite the result against Miami, I think Pat Julmiste is really showing signs of maturing as a quarterback. There was one play in the Louisville game that I thought was a turning point in his QB career. USF is up 14-0, but it's still early. It is 3rd down and 5 at the UofL 30. USF needs to pick up a first down, or risk a long field goal attempt. It's a passing play. Julmiste gets flushed out of the pocket, scrambles to his right, sees an opening, and... DOESN'T run for the first down. He could have easily gained five yards with his feet, but instead he took an extra fraction of a second, and threw a strike to a well-covered Amarri Jackson for 18 yards and a first down. Two plays later, Jackson ran for a touchdown, and USF was up 21-0. I thought that play showed a real maturation in Julmiste as a QB. For once he DIDN'T look to run first, run second, run third and then maybe throw. He eschewed the scramble and made a tough throw in a clutch situation. That took confidence and guts. Now, against Miami... well, we didn't see so much of that, but Miami's defense makes a lot of QBs look tentative. Julmiste did have one good play, though: when he pump-faked Meriweather out of his shoes. That was great. Anyway, Julmiste isn't going to face any more defenses like Miami's this season, perhaps not even in a bowl game. The question is, can he make plays against Big East defenses, just like he did against Louisville? I think he can. I'm seeing signs of maturation in him, a confidence that I hadn't seen previously. It all starts with Pittsburgh. With two weeks to prepare, I think we will see the confident Julmiste again: a capable leader who makes plays. And that's all this USF football team needs right now.
