    Memorabilia
Yep, it's back here in my man cave, er Bulls cave, getting ready for the season and opening up boxes of memorabilia and merchandise that I always thought I would have in my man cave.  But my travels over the years, due to work, have landed me in multiple towns and houses.  It seems now I am finally in a "forever" home (until I move to Florida in the very near future).  Either way, I'm going through the stuff in storage and determining what is going to be in the short term cave here at site headquarters in Gilbert, Arizona.
It's the second time site headquarters have been in Gilbert, Arizona.  After Clermont, Florida (with a satellite office in Owings Mills, Maryland) we established a home base in the rural town of Higley, Arizona before moving to Gilbert, then Chandler, Arizona and then finally back to Gilbert, Arizona.  That probably sounds indecisive and expensive, but for those that know the Phoenix area, you can do all of that and not travel much more than ten miles - you could even add Tempe and Mesa for just a couple miles.
Yes, I'm coming home to Tampa.  One of the best outcomes of the pandemic is my 55 hour in-office grind became a 60 hour home office grind instead.  I might do that another year or two but it no longer keeps me in the land of haboobs and javelinas.  I'll miss the weather.
Anyway, so in preparation for the season and for an imminent move, I am getting this stuff out of storage, sorting it out and deciding what can be displayed back here for the turnaround season, what goes back in storage, what gets tossed and what do I find a new owner for?  For example, the helmet last post.  Signed by Lee Roy.  Display.  Solved.  The box of 10-12 Sun Bowl Game Programs...anyone?  The Notre Dame pins recently mentioned on the board (are somewhere) and I have a lot of stuff that should be in good shape that might have appeal.  A bunch of those Leavitt signed tickets in lucite - a transparent or translucent plastic, any of a class of methyl methacrylate ester polymers.  Signed of course.  Go to the poll of this thread and let me know if you would have interest in buying or donating for any of this stuff.  There is a poll accompanying this post, please vote early and often.
So I do have a number of game balls.  My fear is that it has been so long since I've had them out of storage, I probably won't remember which is which.  I also have other signed balls and, well, we'll see how that goes.
In the box with the LRS signed throwback helmet was a football.  Unsigned and unmarked as a game ball, it seems to be mostly just a handsome football emblazoned with the USF logo.  But it is the famous pre-Under Armour, pre-Adidas Wilson GST ball.  It's in really good shape - logo is sharp and strong.  Love that GST to toss around.  Never played catch with this one, but did buy my kids GST balls from USF for them to play with during that era of USF Football.  Those are now jammed in some sewer drain or left behind in one of the headquarters moves.  The kids were young, loved the Bulls and the balls but they were to play with, not admire.
Did I ever tell you I got Roberto Clemente's autograph on a baseball?  Along with Willie Stargell and the entire 1971 World Series Champion Pirates?  Yeah, you guessed it.  I took that ball outside and played with it in the neighborhood.  Thought it was the coolest ball we ever hit from the empty lot into the orange grove, off the dirt mound and into the streets of San Antonio, Florida.  Second dumbest thing I ever did.
    Anyway, nice ball.
Next item pulled I may need some help on.  I remember buying the jersey from USF and was pretty sure it was a Marlon Mack jersey which delighted me like no other of that time.  Marlon was the only "5" so I was pretty confident.  I bought three different jersey numbers and was surprised this was available.  I was surprised to get this one.  It's been in the box a while, so it's a little wrinkly, but it's an absolute beauty of a SoFlo jersey.  Marlon's iconic 5.
I can't believe I have had it in a box this long.
This should be in a jersey display box.  No autograph.  Just historic.  I loved Andre Hall, his talent and commitment to winning (Hey, I made Andre Hall Heisman bumper stickers).  But, in my mind, there has not been a more talented running back at South Florida than Mack Attack.  Certainly, as expected with these once worn SoFlo jerseys, it's in great shape.  At a minimum, this needs to be on a Lou Hansell garment hanger.
Here's a quick shot at what it looks like on its way to the end zone, if you'd sort of forgotten:

Back in the 90s, I'd have used my knowledge off BBC code to "marquee" that across the page.  Real animation back in the day.
Alright, that's all I got right now, but I am falling behind on my box opening schedule.  The Marlon jersey was the first item from the second box.  Looks like another ball is in there and some stuff wrapped in moving paper.  Maybe right after dinner and a check on The Bulls Pen, there'll be more.  Again, don't forget to vote and/or comment, especially if you're a fan of collecting Bulls memorabilia, and so on.

Well, over the weekend, I was thinking about the other blog I post to and decided to go to the storage center where I have most of my by non-essential belongings after we downgraded to a small ranch near the town's restaurant/bar district.
I was looking for some of my hard drives, they're probably destroyed by now.  The family doesn't enter the storage unit with the diligence and carefulness that I do.  It's more like their trapped in a fun house and just sort of create a way in and out.   My box separated paths look like overgrown trails in the woods.  Boxes have fallen or are leaning into the way.
I'm sure I'll find the hard drives smashed, likely stepped on or crushed under the weight of 5 boxes of books that no one will ever again read.  Not that we don't read anymore, we go the e-book route.  Actually boxes like that probably hold my game programs, Tony Grier's "A Raging Bull: Chasing the Big Time" (three copies, I think) and other bovine related matters of print.
Anyway, it is literally dozens, maybe 3 dozen boxes of stuff.  I brought ten boxes back here to the man cave since that is where my desk is.
I was also looking for a jersey for the chap on our merchandise board that asked about one.  I would estimate I have somewhere between 8-12 jerseys.  My jersey acquisitions really dissipated after I did the Bay Made, Bay Left  foolishness I pulled about 17 years ago.  Man time flies.  I miss home.
I was already out of town when the Athletics Department started having those yard sales of Bulls gear.  I lament missing those.  All my stuff had to be acquired one at a time from an online site or that rare and usually unscheduled/unannounced auction on the Athletics site.  I still check that routinely, even though they probably haven't listed an auction in five years or more.  I get attached to tabs on the board index too.  I get it.
I've made it sort of ceremonious for myself back here.  I haven't cheated and looked in the boxes, but I do know from the sound they make, there may be no hard drives.  Regardless, it's going to be like opening a pack of baseball cards, I am sure there are things in there I have forgotten about.  It'll be new all over again.  I also have collections of vintage golf gear, but I won't bore you with that.  Those items will be on my vintage golf gear blog launching in summer of '23.
So Box #1 had an awkward, unbalanced feel to it and through the handle slots in the banker's box it seem like it had to be a helmet - a full size one.  I don't have many that I can recall, although in recent auctions I wish I would have picked up some newer ones.  I'm blaming my purchasing slump on the Bulls downturn in football and I'm already paying a fortune for storage.  Add more helmets, add more storage.  As soon as I get relocated it's all coming out for good!  For display.
Well, it was a helmet, and it did come back to me where I got it.  It is a style many Bulls fans (that have been around) reminisce about. @Triple B probably still thinks privately about it when he's alone.  Also, it has the autograph of one of the greatest ever to be associated with the Bulls.  Certainly the greatest person, Lee Roy Selmon.

No sign of hard drives.  So far we can assume they are safe.  But nine and a half boxes to go in this round.
There's a lot of history on those hard drives and some pretty damaging comments over the 23 years of the sites.  At this rate, I'll be blackmailing some of you when I'm around 87.  They've been boxed up for some time. So, hang on as long as you can.

Brett discusses the Bulls on local Tampa radio prior to the trip to Alabama and the huge win against Auburn, take a listen:
It's eleven minutes long, feel free to open up the Bulls at Auburn gallery and look at some images from the game.  You can find them here

I can't even remember much about this any more.  But I guess we took action to contribute towards the now named Lee Roy Selmon Athletics Center.  It was very nice to receive this letter in appreciation:

As best as I can remember, this was probably something that came out of one of the original iterations of the Bulls Backers Club.  If I had to guess, Eric is @E.T., Steve is @ZeroBullChip, Richard is @Ricky the Bull.  I'm not sure who Jeff is but have some ideas.  Jeff (and maybe Steve) may be the guys from the Carraba's at 56th and Fowler where we hosted many watch parties.
Please remember, we are also raising funds for the future On Campus Stadium.
Along with this, I remember here was a campus celebration for the athletic season in which we officially joined the Big East.  Member @HowieP went to it to ensure we had a picture of the Big East flag being raised.  To the right is the facility and in the background you can see the football team at practice.

This may be going be going a bit far, but Howie also was our incognito photog capturing pictures of the LRS center as it was being built...seems similar to our fascination with the IPF today.

Back in the early days of USF Football, SouthFloridaBulls.com held chats with different Bulls-related guests ranging from reporters to administrators to former players.  I just came across the transcripts and want to test out displaying - AND this is the transcript with our fellow board member @Dave_Glaser.  It occurred on 6/9/2005.  So, if you want to flash back and see if we were asking questions about uniforms back then or suggesting we fire everyone, you can read for yourself.   Left in the archives for now are chats with Brett McMurphy (yep), Greg Auman, Tony Grier, John Gerdes and more.

During early 2005 press conferences (seems to be on National Letter of Intent day), Coach Jim Leavitt speaks about the incoming freshman Matt Grothe.  He talks about something we all came to observe and treasure - Matt's confidence.
    It's a quick clip, I think you'll like.

Not too long ago, someone suggested posting some of the old stuff from the early years.  I have probably 5 hard drives of stuff, but three of those hard drives don't seem to want to work.  Anyway, a more recent one had a mini-trove of interesting stuff I thought I'd toss out here to get it started.  Please feel free to add your own and to comment so I know someone is seeing this stuff!
First, I have a circa 2005 Athletics Master Planning image you'd probably enjoy seeing considering today's efforts towards an OCS and the nearly complete IPF.

Another clipping from the very early days.  The writer mentions three Bulls fans all of which were members here back in 2005, our 5th/6th year of existence.  If you have trouble reading, let me know I will try to add a screen grab easier on the eyes.

Seems we're finally getting old enough as a football program or athletic program overall for people to start appreciating the retro or vintage Bulls logos.  I grabbed this page off the internet archive site.  It was created quite a bit ago from an old basketball media guide I bought.  Best part is it includes our boy, @smazza in it!

A look back at Bulls teams of yesteryear

    "SNORTIN FIRE AND BREATHIN' SMOKE"
In this feature you will find selected pages taken from the 1976-77 USF Basketball Press Guide.
The Bulls (known then as the Golden Brahmans) were entering their sixth season of basketball, the second under Head Coach Chip Conner - the Brahmans' third head coach in their brief history.  Sadly, the Brahmans would only manage a 9-18 record, losing 11 of their final 14 games, including a first round loss in the inaugural Sun Belt Tournament.  This followed a 19-8 showing just the year before.
Led by Dave Niemenn, Penny Greene, Steve Sanford, Rick Wagner and Cal Glover, these Golden Brahmans were Bulls Basketball pioneers.
I encourage you to click on the thumbnails below to open up the full page scans.  They are easily readable and offer some outstanding history on USF Basketball.

A full color, full page scan of the front cover of the Bulls 76-77 press guide. This is the first page of the press guide.  It provides a real feeling for the times as it discusses a range of issues from the formation of the Sun Belt Conference (who knew it was initially a six team conference that included New Orleans?).  Good reading, and who can resist the green bull?
Had to include a thumbnail of these middle pages.  If you click on the thumbnail, it will take you to the full size version of the right hand page.  Notice the finger image pointing to the green highlighted picture?  Click on this thumbnail to find out whose picture was in the "Name that Bull" contest at the message board!  He's a previous basketball manager, a member of our message board and an ardent USF Supporter. To think that 25 years ago, USF games were carried on WFLA radio and on WUSF Channel 16 on a tape delay basis....is anyone getting any ideas here? Check out the nice suit on Jack Harris, the original "Voice of the Golden Brahmans."
A two-page pictorial that really places you back in the mid 70s.  Even the Sheriff will like a couple of these! Some curious pictures here:  Head Coach Chip Conner performing Seth Greenberg poses before there was a Seth Greenberg.  And look at that Brahman mascot in the picture on the left...that is scary.  Both thumbnails open up to full size page scans.
The Brahman Bull Horn Band, the Commuter Rooters, the Green Scream Machine, the Brahman Cheerleaders, the Herd and the Bullettes all led the way in rooting for the up and coming Brahman basketball program. The Bullettes vs. Sun Dolls...who'd win?
"SNORTIN FIRE AND BREATHIN' SMOKE"?? A nostalgic Brahmans press guide cover, with the "Snortin fire and breathin' smoke" cheer.  A must read for any Bulls fan born after 1960.
Note the USF logo at the bottom of the page.

This screen grab of the site about 15 years ago has some memorable meaning for me.  It was around 2002 and the site was beginning to take off a little.  A fan from another site of one of the early pay sites decided to insult the old SouthFloridaBulls.com site - the original host of "TheBullsPen".  So being a smart ass, I went ahead and gave the guy his own front page story.  We were going to seek venture capital to update the site to proper 2002 standards.
The other memorable part was directly related to the desire to form "The 12th Man Club" - the precursor to the Bull Backers Club.  Not too long after advertising a 12th Man Club, I received a cease and desist order from Texas A&M that I still have lying around somewhere.  We talked about renaming to the "12th Bull Club" but ultimately settled on the Bull Backers in order to support the program.. without jail time.

How about a look way back at the early days and origin of The Bulls Pen, saved from the internet archive.

This site, bullventuresinc.com, was the lead site in the sprawling internet based empire led by the former entrepreneur known as Bulliever. Bulliever incorporated a company known as "Bull Ventures, Inc. (BVI)  It was a company whose charter and mission would lead into unknown recesses of the internet while spearheading efforts at building a USF Fan base online.
After a rough experiment in the internet retail business (specifically in selling South Florida Bulls gear), Bull Ventures, Inc. folded.  What's left is this name and this site out in cyberspace - so we might as well use it.
Still remaining of the empire is SouthFloridaBulls.com, the flagship site of the former BVI and pride and joy of Bulliever.
At SouthFloridaBulls.com, you will find numerous features, articles, etc. on South Florida Basketball and Football.
Hosted at this site are two main features of the complete online Bulls experience.
    First,
The largest online Bulls Message Board Community.  Please click on the image above and see for yourself.

    Secondly (to be opening soon),
The only online Bulls auction site.  The site is open for bidding right now, with a Grand Opening announcement scheduled for the week of 09/16/02.

Below you will find an article written by Brett McMurphy.  It is from August 2006 and you can detect McMurphy's entitlement and his disdain for Coach Jim Leavitt.  Leavitt was being Leavitt, which probably wasn't helpful and the article became about Leavitt.  There were some player issues that brought this on and we know how that worked with the media back then.  Oh and by the way, this is clearly from back when Brett and I were on talking terms.  Towards the end of the article, he piped in how some website operator from TheBullsPen.com was also upset.  😂

Continuing to inventory relics of the old SouthFloridaBulls.com takes us to one of the more offbeat things a young USF fan base did.  After about 4-5 years of football we decided it was time to erect an online "Hall of Fame".  Since we're a fans' site, fewer rules got in the way.  This allowed us to induct anyone that was making a difference at that time for the upstart USF Football team or elsewhere within Athletics.
Ancient html makes this a less than pretty page, but take a look.

In 2002, SouthFloridaBulls.com established a virtual Hall of Fame to recognize South Florida's outstanding players, coaches, administrators and fans.

        SouthFloridaBulls.com Turns 5!
    Brad Meyer
I’m not one that usually does much to celebrate or commemorate certain dates or events, but because of the good fortune I feel being the “founder” of SouthFloridaBulls.com (SFB), I felt it worthwhile to elaborate on the fifth anniversary of its creation.
The site debuted on August 31, 1999, just as the Bulls were to begin their third season of football.  The site started as – and remains – a hobby.  It seemed like the perfect hobby.  I could learn a little HTML, express my thoughts on the World Wide Web, and more important than anything, make sure that there would be a consistent Bulls presence on the Internet.  All three concepts came together in a site that prided itself on being a fans site.
As a fans site, I have tried to shape the site in ways that Bulls fans would find it informative, maybe get a laugh or two, even find it useful as an archive.  There are over 85 gigabytes of Bulls data, images, video and audio now resident on SFB’s server.
Over the years there were less than successful features like “Voice of the Fan” in which a fan could call a local phone number and leave an audio message on the site.  I thought it was a great new feature, but I was apparently alone with that thought.  There was the online crossword puzzle, the Bulls Nostalgia features, GreenbergOpolis specials, the online store, auctions, trivia, polls, chats, photo galleries and audio and video from press conferences and other special events.  All designed solely to catch the eye of the passing Bulls fan – or potential Bulls fan.  Other “sticky” features offered over the years include free email, a free newsletter and of course the message board.
Important in building any online community is the message board.  SFB’s first message board was very simple and allowed very few user options.  The second-generation board opened up in late 1999 and lasted until mid-May of 2000.  It had more bells and whistles, but also numerous glitches.  In May of 2000 the current message board, known as TheBullsPen.com was opened.  It has grown to become the centerpiece of the SFB site, virtually becoming an entity of its own when the domain  “TheBullsPen.com” was purchased and hosted separately in August 2003.
The reason for it all?  To build a vibrant online Bulls community – a place where we can all go to catch up with each other, read and post about our Bulls and attract other potential Bulls fans.  Building the Bulls fan base is job #1.
The site is achieving success in that job category.  With over 1100 message board members and 500 email users, it is clear the Bulls online presence is strengthening.  The members themselves have been integral to the growth of the site.  Site members have provided strategic advice, technical management, content creation, and audio/visual material to the site along with voluntary financial contributions.
Most importantly however, the site’s members and guests have provided a wealth of camaraderie – which is what provides me with the feeling of good fortune.  Five years doesn’t just mark the anniversary of the site, it also reminds me of how long I have known many of the visitors, members and guests of the site and its message board - the friendships that have been built and the good times shared.
We need only build on this as our Bulls enter the Big East and take a more prominent position on the national stage.  Together, we can build an even stronger online community and find new ways to attract and expand the Bulls fan base.
Now, let’s invite few more Bulls to the party and cut the cake!

In a recent discussion about local coverage of the USF Bulls football program (What’s with Knight and the McNeese State references?) I mentioned some of the involvement of former beat writers Brett McMurphy, Greg Auman and Jeff Odom having interaction with TheBullsPen.com.  In fact, I recalled how the relationship benefited both parties as TBP promoted McMurphy and Auman in the days of USF's rise to national awareness.  Both McMurphy and Auman frequented the board and from it gathered story ideas.   All did chats or Q&A.  In looking back at past interactions, it reminded me of  some of the articles written that mentioned SouthFloridaBulls.com/TBP.  Starting with this blog entry, I'll post those that are available.  Good reading, not just for a TBP reference but to get a better feeling for those days.
This first article is pretty eye-opening.  In fact I remember the time period well.  No official site.  I remember talking to the SID at an earlier time about the importance of an online presence.  Back in the early days, communication was typically by fax.  But the web had been around for a handful of years and teams were doing different things.  Ultimately, USF lost its official website.

We are in the final three weeks of our $23 for 23 Crowdfunding effort.  I must admit, I thought raising $10,000 for USF Football would have been much easier among the fan base of The Bulls Pen.  Right now, between the Crowdfunding App and straight donating to the effort we are beyond $5,000.  The raffles are helping, by adding more than $500 more.
With board activity beginning to increase and the anticipation for Bulls football mounting, I still think we will get there.  I will send a note to those rejoining the board to ensure they are aware of the effort.  We also have some nice raffles, I'll recap here.
A pair of Club Access tickets to Wisconsin at South Florida, August 30:

This raffle ends Monday at 8:00 eastern.  Please follow the link to learn more.

A Marlon Mack limited and numbered autographed card - in USF uniform:
       This raffle ends next Saturday
A team autographed Yuengling hat including all autos for MBB and WBB last season
This raffle ends Saturday as well.

Please visit the raffles links to ensure you have the right deadline for purchasing entry tickets.  The raffles close at the posted time, and within minutes the system selects a random winner.
You can also expect a few more raffles to be added prior to the end of the drive.  Visiting this page, will keep you up to date on live raffles that are directly in support our our USF Football drive.

It's the offseason, so maybe not the best time to be asking for feedback, but it provides us time to analyze and evaluate feedback before the 2019-20 USF Athletic seasons.  So, whether you are a new member, or a founding member, please share your insights with us in the site survey.  You can find it and other discussion on this thread:

Just to have something else fun to do with your member points, now you can play the lottery.  Initially, it will be a weekly lottery with pots of various sizes.  You can see this week's lottery (just started today) here:
    https://www.thebullspen.com/lottery/
It will end tonight, as it is mostly a test run.  But if you like games of chance like lotteries, feel free to play weekly.  You can buy as many tickets as your points will afford.
You should already be aware of the Member Shop.  It's a points store that allows you to play games, acquire board functions or purchase smaller gift items with your points.  Items and costs will change frequently so as not to break the bank and to address inflation, exchange rates and monetary policies.
Lastly, another extension of your points and the Member Shop is the Betting Shop.  Once again, your points come into play and you can bet on featured college or NFL games - virtually anything.  There si even a spot for you to "request a bet" if there is a game you'd like to wager on that is not shown.
I hope you'll visit these optional forms of entertainment - it may help pass the time to USF Football!  Have fun.

It is easier than ever to join the conversation at The Bulls Pen.  And the giveaways, quizzes, galleries, downloads, Member Shop, etc., too.
I have recently completed a revisit of the social integrations functionality after finding some had been broken by our software as well as that of Facebook and Twitter.
The integrations are important for a number of reasons, but I'll stick with the top two.
New members - Anyone with a Facebook, Twitter, Google, Linked In or Windows account can log in to The Bulls Pen with those credentials.  Very simple access to an account at TBP and immediate posting.  It really is so easy.  So, if you're out there talking with fellow or future Bulls fans, bump into them on Twitter, or Linked In remind them they can join in seconds, and maintain the same identity they have on other social platforms.  Here is what guests will see when they come upon https://thebullspen.com:

For existing members, if you go to your profile page, you'll see to the left the opportunity to integrate with your social platform accounts, allowing you to share name changes, content, and status updates (varies by social platform).  It makes it very easy to share from TBP to Twitter and FB.  Here is my profile.  I am integrated with all but Linked In at this time.

Please keep this in mind when talking to other Bulls.  There's no dreaded sign up, just use one of the social platform credentials nearly everyone has already!  And as a member, by getting yourself connected, you will have an easier time sharing with others you.
If you run into any problems while setting up your integrations, please let me know.

The calendar function has been around since The Bulls Pen was a forum on SouthFloridaBulls.com.
It doesn't quite get the community use it could, so I'll invite you to visit and see if it can help manage yours and our Bulls life.
First of all, there are two calendars that combine as one:
Bulls scheduled games Bulls events Only the Admin can add scheduled games, but we can all add events - such as BULLRALLY I added a week or so ago.  Events can have RSVPs attached so members here can see which other members are planning on going.
The feature I wanted to mention is the "Set Reminder" function.

A new feature recently added, now you can set that reminder that will keep you informed, even if you are not on the website.  I recently set up a test reminder to share.  It's a nice email reminding you of an event (with however many days lead you need) as well as some recent stories from the Pen at the bottom of the reminder email.  Here is what my reminder looked like for Fall Camp (top of email):

So, whether it's the first football game, fall camp, BULLSRALLY, Block party (to be added) or any other function or game on the calendar or to be entered on the calendar, you can use the TBP reminder email to keep you on schedule.
I hope you'll visit the Calendar (tab on main navigation bar) and provide some comment.
    Thank you.

We had a couple threads on the new "Points" economy, this being the initial one:
The points collecting has been in place for about a month, there is plenty of experimenting to do, but the possibilities are pretty entertaining.  I don't think it's a good thing to identify what adds points to your count (you'll figure it out), but I can tell you one key source of points is being online everyday, multiple days in a row at the least.  Starting quality topics is rewarding as well.
Points will be able to be used in the future for a number of things including games (like Rock, Paper, Scissors), board actions (username changes, signature changes, entry into premium raffles) and lotteries and a betting shop.  The latter two will be around towards football season.  Most of all, you can turn in your points earned as a member of this community to buy USF gear, memorabilia and even donate to USF.
There will be more to come on this functionality, but there is a version 1.0 of the points store located here:  Points Shop
If you look on the main menu under "More" you should see this as well as some other helpful stats and information.  Again, get familiar, more to come on this.
