Well I guess this is not a problem now.

The terms of Davis' settlement with the University of North Carolina prevented him from taking a coaching position, and he was instead hired as an advisor to Schiano, who was the defensive coordinator under Davis at the University of Miami.[15]

That's old news, he can still coach but it would get UNC off the hook. He might do it if he likes and wants to stay in Tampa while coaching.

Who cares if these guys are short term? There is literally only one coach who would be happy to coach at USF for his entire life and not bat an eye. That coach is in San Francisco right now.

Do you guys honestly believe that a coach would come here and turn down more money/better facilities/better conference just to stay at USF? Send me your address if you do, because I honestly believe I can write it off as a charity donation.

This is not an elite job. Maybe in the future if we become a winner and ride a wave of success to a better conference, facilities, stadium, recruiting class, etc. Until then though, be happy with short term success. It took an 8 year(!) contract extension to keep Strong at Louisville. If Davis/Taggart/whoever comes in and makes us a BCS level program, that is the kind of deal we are going to need to be able to offer to keep these guys here. Anything less, and they bolt to Tennessee, Arkansas, Wisconsin, etc. This isnt the job opening it was in 2009. Short term solutions are still that, SOLUTIONS.

Ghost, i agree that this is not and elite job, but because you put stadium and facilities as separate, I'd have to argue about our facilities. They are top notch and if they do add the indoor practice facility, they'd be even better

I was not trying to knock our facilities. They are great. Very competitive. My point was that there are better facilities out there and if there is an opening at one of those schools and they come calling for our guy, he might make the jump. That isnt saying that we have bad facilities at all. I would love to get that indoor facility one of these days.

My rant was really trying to say that this is going to be a short term job for ANY coach we bring in. The only way we keep one of these guys is if:

-There are no job openings at better schools above us

-There are openings, but they dont want our coach

-He can stay under the radar long enough for us to get our facilities and recruiting class up to par with the schools above us in those departments, that way he wouldnt have much of a reason to leave

-The above, and we become a consistent winner, and any job offerings are at drowning schools

-He falls in love with USF and Tampa, gets the USF logo tattooed on his lower back, and signs a 99 year contract extension

I don't understand USF fans and their disdain for coaches good enough to eventually leave USF. They want lifers.

I want USF to have coaches good enough that other teams will come knocking on his door after the season ends. For example, if Stan Heath can get us to the tournament again this year, you don't think "the big boys" will come knocking.

If they choose to stay, that's great on them. But I want USF to have coaching commodities and not just coaches.

I know why they (we) want lifers. We were spoiled by Leavitt. Never would left for any job.

Agreed. I think a string of successful coaches can elevate the program. Look at Boise, for example. It's a better job today because the national perception of Boise has changed, due largely to their sustained success. I think lots of coaches can be successful there. USF's "program" has not yet been elevated to the point where we can draw successful lower-level coaches on a consistent basis.

I don't generally prefer "entrenched" coaches, although it would be good for coaches to stick around about as long as university presidents tend to stick around, like 5-10 years. (Genshaft has been around longer than most of her peers at other universities.) Sometimes coaches overstay their welcome.

I know it's a crap shoot, but I wonder if we'd be willing to take a big boy step forward and hire Davis as HC with Taggart as a top coordinator/recruiting specialist. Sure, it would cost us a lot of money and I'm not saying Taggart would go for it, but it would make for a nice coach-in-waiting situation if all parties were amicable toward the idea.

Again... crap shoot... I fully understand this.
