I was thinking the same thing when I read his list.

Stock car racing has technology that tells officials when a pit crew member steps on the pit box line, essentially meaning out of bounds. Meanwhile, we have refs spotting balls based on judgement, and grown men throwing a red hanky on the field if they disagree with a call.

I love both sports, but come on now.

Technology makes your opening statement completely erroneous. In terms of low brow sports you are also off. Try these: stock car racing, rodeo, UFC, etc....

Ironically, stock car racing is probably the least "low brow" sport in the US. How many engineers are involved in teaching the air raid offense? Or teaching how to box out?

    Don't worry, I'll wait.

I think McCloud will be a good QB with a better offensive line and plays designed around his strengths. I’m hopeful he can improve his arm strength in the off season.

Arm strength isn’t typically something that just develops overnight. Especially not in your third year in a program.

McCloud will be a solid back up for us, but I’ll be shocked if he ends up starting.

I could see where it would be interpreted that way. I am more or less talking about leverage with recruits.

Nobody has much leverage over 5 star kids but since Clemson has become almost a top 2 destination....they have a little more clout than say Florida or Michigan and can be selective even in high level recruits. We generally don't have much of a chance with those guys.

Mostly this would only apply to "friends/family" recruits. So say you have 3 guys who are cousins or friends....a borderline 5 star, a 4 star and a 2 star.

However, if the highest rated guy isn't interested in USF, you could offer the best player to "put in a good word with Dabo" and in exchange for getting commits from the other two.

It probably never will happen but networks help. I don't think MK would have had much success getting Jeff Scott if he already didn't have a relationship with Dabo.

Clemson is a unicorn in the modern era of recruiting. They are very selective in their offer process (even compared to the Bama’s of the world), they rarely ever have a decommit/flip, and they almost never go the Juco/Portal route.

One thought process is that we could get the guys that CJS has been evaluating, but maybe couldn't quite offer him at Clemson. I’m sure the staff evaluates the same amount of kids as other programs, but it’s hard to guess what guys would fit in this category because they don’t extend non-commitable offers.

I have to imagine he had some connection with Gray Academy because Hunter Helms and Dollison came out of no where

Not sure what we are comparing to Clemson.  Our top assistant would be their #3, except you know we just took their #3 so there is nothing to compare.   Streeter has been promoted to passing game coordinator and has been there about half as long as Scott.  Scott was making a million as the co-oc.  Streeter already had the recruiting coordinator tag.   The cap on Streeters promoted salary would seem to be less than a million as a lesser tenured lower titled guy.  Obviously we will know the $ when we know it.  Without a doubt Clemson can pay this guy whatever they need to retain him, if they want to.   However my comment was general response to the idea that $500,000 is a little steep for us.

We have been paying about 250,000 out of the assistant pool to supplement other staff positions.  That would leave 3.25. Clemson had a 7.4 million dollar pool.  They paid their top assistant 30% of their total money, paid their coordinator positions(3) 57% of their total money, and were paying out a little under 5% to their lowest paid assistant.    That would translate to $975,000, 1.85 million, and $156,000 here.

Does that distribution hold up?  Can't see us spending over half our money on 2 or 3 guys but there are nearly infinite ways to split the money up.    Could realistically handle 1.2 million total on 2 coordinators, 0.5 mil on 3 low staff, and have an average of $310,000 each for the 5 mid staff positions.   How Scott distributes the money is obviously unknown right now and is going to be structured around who he CAN get not just who he wants.

Plenty of the schools in 2019 who had pools around 3.25 were paying 600-800 ( Rod Smith 800k at Illinois - surprising)

Either way our assistant pool appears to have gone from 5th in conference to 1st - very pleased with that.

Not to mention the opportunity for Streeter to call plays. It doesn't appear likely, but I'd love it if CJS could snag him.

My issue is not so much what the system is as much as it is being dogmatic in your adherence to it. If you think that it is more important to stick to your scheme no matter who is on your roster than it is to put up a more success plan for the players you actually have on your roster, that's an insane position to me and I do not understand why it is so pervasive in football.

Could not agree more. The worst part is it usually comes down to ego.

This is why I couldn't stand CCS. Any human with common sense could've taken a step back and said, this team just needs a little help on defense and they'll be on their way. CCS ego couldn't let him do just that. He couldn't have a high flying offense that he didn't understand.

In this sport, ego from the top ruins more teams than anything else.

I'm not wishing CJS any ill will. I wish him success, but I've notice he is not getting any of the scrutinization as the other coaches. I am just stating that I personally will be calling him out if he doesn't live up to his hype.

It’s been like 2 weeks man....

First season CCS had 10 wins. He is the first coach to finish out a FULL season including a bowl game with 10 wins. :) Something Taggart, Levitt and Skip Holtz has never done. Either way like I said, Taggart and CCS had EVERY move they made scrutinized and doubted from day 1. I'm going to make sure CJS receives that same energy and hold him to the same standard that we did for Taggart and CCS.

This is a weird hill to die on, but cool. I’ll swing back by in 12 months and see how you’re feeling

I'm going to hold CJS to the SAME standards you all held Taggart and CCS to. Taggart and CCS had every move scrutinized. So far, i'm not impressed. Hell even Taggart at FAU landed himself a 4 star player his first week.  Also this year I expect to make a bowl game as well.

To be fair, can you name a move that CCS made that turned out to be successful?

  10. Definitely disappointed that we are going to miss on Tate, but I agree that Jordan Smith looks like a prototypical USF QB. Between him and Evans, we should have a decent group of dual threat guys should we (hopefully) go that route. I still think there's an above average chance that Chase Brice transfers in as well. Not a terrible QB room given the situation.

I was thinking that myself. Hopefully he adopts this program like it is one of his own babies and keeps building it up. Get USF standing in a strong position so if the next wave of conference realignment happens, we all will be fine.

I don’t think he knows any other way. Plus, his respect for MK is too strong to not make this a priority. We don’t know for sure if he will make a successful HC, but we do know it won’t be for a lack of effort and commitment. I can live with that

Love the thought but it's like anyone else who is offered more money, better facilities, higher profile etc - be difficult to turn down.

If anyone in this profession were to do it, it would be the Clemson guys. They value family and fit over dollars and facilities. The reason he is here and not elsewhere is Michael Kelly. Every good coach knows he must have the right AD in order to build a sustainable culture and environment.

I think Jeff Scott is a good hire, although I would have loved CJL. That being said, if you put lipstick on a pig it’s still a pig. Strong left the cupboard pretty bare, so unless there are a lot of players in the portal that want to play for CJS, don’t be surprised if it takes a couple years to get back to a winning record.

I’ll be surprised if we aren’t contending for a conference title by 2021 at the latest. It’s been proven that you can rapidly change your trajectory in this conference - UCF, SMU, and even USF once we switched offenses.

I have a good feeling that we can get Chase Brice to transfer down with CJS. If we can also land Rodemaker and Smith, that’s a much improved QB room. I wouldn’t be totally surprised if others transferred in as well.....guys like TJ Chase and Regan Upshaw come to mind.

There isn’t one player that we can plug in and fix all of the OL issues, but my hope is that through development and scheme adjustments, we can at least get average play up front.

Correct. By all accounts he never actually interviewed on campus. This was all done behind remote closed doors. Word would certainly spread if he was in Tampa. News of the hire first came out from Clemson leakers. Actually, the very first word came on the South Carolina 247 board, I think. Question is, when did Kelly sneak off to formally interview Jeff Scott?

It’s been reported that Kelly was at the Clemson game on Saturday, and they spoke Saturday night. In fact, I read somewhere that Scott was making calls letting his recruits know on Sunday morning.

My guess is Scott was plan A all along, but he stayed out of their way to allow them to game prep during the week out of respect
