Actually per Sunshine laws they have to give 2 or 3 days notice (not sure which). Keep an eye on things later in the week. Hope we have reason for such an impromptu meeting too...

That would be a gamble for everyone involved, but if it gets us in the Big 12, that's a new lease on life for us.

It will no doubt be harder though-we are going to have to work harder to be winners. WVU went from being a dominationg BCS contender to being middle of the road in the Big 12. Who knows? Florida is excellent for talent, perhaps we'll have a better chance.

If we somehow ended up in the B1G, I would find a way to buy enough cake to feed everyone a slice at a non-FCS or G5 home game. 

Speechless!  I expect more out of the USF Marketing and Athletic departments.  A Jib Jab ripoff video makes USF look "small time" instead of "BIG TIME".  If we want USF to be considered a major player we need to start acting like it, this video is Sunbelt at best.  Another failure for the USF marketing department.

I love it...it really reinforces the "Tampa is USF country" theme with all the local leaders. All we need now is Buckhorn and The County Commission!

I don't know that Bresnahan will be better than Cosh.

I've seen a lot of pro coaches try and come down to the college level. Nick Saban is a major exception guys-he was a superstar at LSU who made a mistake by going to the NFL. He came back to Alabama and we all know the rest there. 

Even Charlie Weiss who is an excellent NFL OC, came down to the college level and struggled. Personally I don't know why he continues to come coach college. He was good in New England, he was good in Kansas City, it doesn't make sense to me that he wants to be a college coach when he's a **** good NFL OC. 

Maybe Bresnahan will succeed here-if he can develop his talent. I don't know that he'll do that, but even getting decent competence out of his players will allow him to do a lot of things that college offenses haven't seen...and oh, will the turnovers roll if he can. 

I could see the B1G trying to get into Florida.  We aren't AAU yet, so strange as it may seem, the most likely choice for them would probably be Miami.

Miami would make a lot of sense for the Big 10. They've cleaned up their academics which weren't all that great in the 80's and 90's to now under Shalala and they're steadily becoming a research powerhouse as well. Miami is by far the best college in Florida academically. The Florida research "big 3" is now UF, USF, and Miami. Now if only USF had some football history, they could be a B1G target as well...

Is it a revenue sport at any colleges?

Not at the current time no. My question is whether it can become one. 

This question has been on my mind for  a while now. 

We've seen, in recent years, the expansion of the hispanic population at a rather rapid pace, both through legal and illegal means. Not only that, within 20 years hispanics will be a major element of the U.S. population. With them comes the advent of serious interest in soccer, which is already growing at a fairly strong place. Moreover, the U.S. soccer team has shown a lot of strength recently and has started to compete quite well at the international level. 

With that in mind, soccer seems to have become a fairly large draw and may well be on the cusp of becoming a big time American sport. I have friends now who I would never have though of as being soccer fans watching the game.

So, to restate the question:

Within 20 years, can we expect soccer to be a college revenue sport alongside football and basketball, or am I just dreaming?

Makes sense for sure. We'd probably get better revenues, plus it would give our Olympic sports time to develop. USF BB is already on the cusp...I could see them becoming a viable P5 sport within a couple of years. 

But UConn headed that way? Would be nuts. They've never been a big revenue school on the football side, so wonder how they'd do with the massive Power 5 revenue increase. 

They did, but seems more a blog for Power 5 news related to the AAC. There's no AAC specific content on that blog. The only two things seriously being discussed on the blog are the Penn State-UCF game in Ireland and anything related to Louisville. Nothing else is making the news there. 

This is basically a "we restored the blog but aren't doing anything with it" type of situation.

After hearing all of those millions it makes my $200 donation seem like bar tip.

Don't feel bad, we give what we can. It's great to have big donors but you can't develop a donor base without the small guys.

I give an OCS 30 years and I still think that it will be at the University mall location.

Doubtful. No way Hillsborough county lets one of their biggest tax generators off the tax rolls for a stadium.

While it is nice to know that USF had better attendance than these schools, a few things stick out. About half of these schools are private with small enrollments, they just dont have the alumni base to fill a stadium. Duke is the top academic school in the ACC, Vandy is the top academic school in the SEC, Stanford is the top academic school in the PAC 12, and Northwestern is the top academic school in the Big 10. Academics do matter with regards to the power 5, every conference always has a token member for this reason. The SEC is proud of Vandy for bringing up standards. Also I'm pretty sure Wake forest has the smallest enrollment of any BCS program. I was surprised with Georgia tech and Maryland however.

Agreed. My youngest cousin just made her college decision to go to wake. It's an excellent school but she is the first person I know to go there.

Want to stress that this is just what I overheard at a dinner with some Architects and Engineers this past weekend. They were talking about a project near the USF Campus (between Busch Gardens and Fowler) that will be very Similar to Downtown Disney. One particular person said plans had been drawn up to have a multi-use restaurant/shops/entertainment.

I have NO IDEA if this will actually get the "Green Light" but if so, would be a great addition to the area near our campus.

This really isn't a rumor, much less recent news.

There has been plans to create an "Innovation Destination" for the past 2 years. I remember threads about this on this board when it was announced. It's a partnership of USF, Busch Gardens, and some of the surrounding hospitals.

The issue is that all of the groups can't agree (yet) on how to proceed.

This goes back a little to the thread I posted on my conversation with Crist a few weeks ago. That said, he felt a stadium in that area was pretty unlikely. If it was part of a district, though, it could work.

Perhaps while we're at it we can add a cricket team. I mean, only one school plays it, but at least it's popular internationally!

I kid, I love cricket, but let's try to work on the sports we have now before adding new ones.

 

 

 

There's no trailer park off 131st anywhere near BBD that I know of so I have no idea where this "top option" is located .... and it wouldn't matter anyway, IMO. An OCS that's not really on campus defeats the purpose of the atmosphere trying to be achieved by having one.

 

 

There is a trailer park on 131st street if you pass north over Fletcher towards Bearss. Actually there are a lot of them.

 

I see what Judy is trying to do and she is trying to expand the campus westward towards I275 because many, many, many parents of students, students themselves, donors, boosters, and everyone else at USF has had issues with the ghetto along Fletcher as you drive into campus.

 

At a meeting I attended on campus last year I heard Judy state that the majority of visitors to USF come to USF via 275 and never see the main entrance. Combined with what I'm hearing from my sources at Busch Gardens I think this might be legit.

 

If the campus of USF is extended west and the stadium is built on that new land, then technically the stadium would be on campus.

 

Not sure what trailer park you are talking about.  131st and Fletcher are parallel.  Maybe I am confused.

 

Anyway, the only trailer park I see on 131st is the Frontier Travel Park on Nebraska.  It is right on 275.  Too far from campus.  At least 1.5 miles.  I hope this is not what they want to do. 

 

Um...now that you bring that up, he did in fact say something like that-it may well be exactly what they decide to do, except building on Nebraska would be a terrible idea-from what I've seen the street is zoned commercial...and doing so would cause huge problems for getting from campus. 

I'm considering requesting the UConn game. My sister is up in Boston and her senior year of dental school will be less hectic than prior years.

Assumption is that lump sum is $200M after taxes. 

1. $100M. 

2. The Bullring at Selmon Stadium. 

3. Make the field large enough to support a cricket pitch (my other great sporting love is cricket), and use the additional space to place student bleacher sections around the field in seasonal seating (not sure if this can be done, but would be a huge home field advantage to have  a few thousand screaming students right on top of the field to disrupt communications). 

4. A bull similar to the ones in front of the Marshall Center and Sun Dome being raised by Jim Leavitt. 

5. A luxury suite for life for me and anyone I choose to bring. 

By the way ... I also want to thank the OP BullsBucsFan426 for sharing this information, when I disagree it isn't with the OP, I am just not sure Victor's vision and USF's vision are the same.

I also could be wrong and ideas could have changed. So, when I share my thoughts on things like this, please don't think that I assume that I am always right.

No problem, and I should have done a little more investigation of Crist's claims prior to posting them. I'm not sure where this trailer park is either. That said, he also thought USF's lease runs another 9 years. Sunshine law request maybe?

That said, I appreciate everyone posting things they're hearing as well. Perhaps I can lean on some of old friends in student government to get a joint hearing with Dr. Genshaft and Crist about the vision for the university area?

Stadiums bring lots of issues. Look at the naming rights fiasco for FAU. First they wanted $1 mil/year. Then they dropped it and a few years later they finally got half that. And who is it with? A corporation THAT BUILDS AND RUNS PRISONS! LOL These are private prisons in the US and other countries so I guess their commercials probably involve someone getting waterboarding and safe ways to pick up soap that's been dropped in the shower. Just saying, leasing cuts out a lot of headaches and problems.

Not every school does the naming rights deal. We may have to, but even so I think we can do better than FAU. If UCF can get Bright house there is no reason we couldn't do as well- there are plenty of quality companies in Tampa. would love to find a reason to sell the rights to Lee Roy selmon's restaurant chain.

Good evening everyone. I know everyone has talked about having an on campus stadium, and everyone has their take as to where it should be, how to build it, etc. That's fine. I'm just bringing some facts to light which I learned today from talking to Victor Crist, who's on the Hillsborough County Commission and previously served as the State Senator representing the USF area. 

1. Crist has worked very closely with Genshaft on a number of issues regarding the USF area and an OCS. He says that they do not plan on renewing the lease at Raymond James when it ends, mostly because of how unfavorable the terms are to USF. So we can expect an on campus stadium within the next decade. If this is the case, I'd imagine fundraising will start seriously within the next one to two years, if it hasn't already. I can't imagine they'd be waiting any longer than that if they want to build a high quality facility (as opposed to some other stadiums in Florida we can name).  Seeing as the lease is due to expire in 2016 (unless my information is wrong), the 24 month option to get out of the lease would be due sometime next year if these plans are serious. 

2. Genshaft's top priority is to create a "Driveway to USF" via the area around the VA and Suitcase City. The plan is to phase out the Fowler Avenue entrance as a main entrance to the University for visitors, and to move it towards 131st Street, where USF Health and our other scientific research facilities are located. The goal for her is to give the impression that whichever side of Bruce B. Downs you're on, you are still at USF-one of the more minor steps you may have already seen towards this goal is the USF flags on the light poles around campus, etc. If anyone hasn't noticed, the VA is steadily building all the way down to 22nd street as well as Fletcher-with the health sciences facilities at USF on the other side, the idea that this is USF will be reinforced. Pure speculation on my part, but you have to wonder if the College of Medicine will start looking at trying to move into Florida Hospital (formerly UCH) across the street as their teaching facility. The on campus stadium would be the crown jewel for the University area, and it would probably be one of the last buildings built in the area. Walmart is also building what you could call a "gourmet" Walmart in the area. As you can tell, the county and the city are pretty keen on cleaning up Suitcase city. 

3. Right now the old soccer and track stadium isn't considered a priority spot for an OCS. Crist stated that the land around it is considered too small to support a football stadium. In addition, USF is keen to ensure that the stadium can be seen from 275-on campus stadiums are meant to show off a university and would be a big marker telling people "Here is USF". Demolishing University Mall is highly unlikely as well-it's commercial property and as such would be a major blow to Hillsborough County tax rolls if the land was converted to a stadium. The top option for locating the stadium is the trailer park in the area around 131st. It's residential zoning, and would be the cheapest to roll off the tax rolls-as well as much less costly, since the mobile homes can be moved elsewhere. A second option, and this is more for Crist than for Dr. Genshaft, is to locate the stadium closer to Busch Gardens and make it a joint use stadium with the Rays. It's not considered particularly likely at this point either, especially seeing the land they want to use is a Historic Site and would be difficult to get permission for construction. 

That's pretty much everything I heard from Crist today-we only got to speak on the issue for about ten minutes after the BOCC meeting. Full disclosure-I did tell him I was going to post it, and he actually encouraged me to. So if you want to speak to Victor Crist further on the issue-I'd highly recommend calling his office and setting up a meeting-he's surely more accessible than Dr. Genshaft at this point. He's a Bull for life-which is a lot more than I could say about some other morons we've seen in our state legislature over the years "cough Alexander and Latvala cough". 

Glad to see the emphasis on recruiting. You bring in the best of what Tampa has to offer, you will win. Too many kids leaving here to play for other state schools just because of the reputation.

If we were able to keep all the best talent home, USF would have multiple NC's. I know this will never be the case as some kids want to leave the state or experience something different, I am more or less pointing out that Tampa and the surrounding area is full of top d1 athletes. I know CWT will do a far better job than CSH did.

I wouldn't say that-miami keeps landing top classes but they haven't been relevant nationally since 2005. Coaching is everything in football...when talented recruits meet high quality coaching, you get Nick Saban. When you get recruits but average at best coaching, you get Ron Zoo.

Can't do this list without Matt Grothe. He's still the best QB we ever had... and without him we never reach #2 or have some of the big wins we've had over the years.

Hopefully we can get that UF game scheduled soon as well. Doug has completely reversed the opinion I had of him two months ago. With schedules like these, nobody will be able to doubt our worthiness if we win 9-10 games a year to be the access bowl team...unless of course we end up in the Big 12 and the reason we're winning all these games is because we've been able to assure people that the Big 12 is taken us.
