  1. This is a sign that he needs to move out. I don't know what drove her to try and prevent him from leaving, it seems so irrational. Does he have younger siblings she needs help with or something? Maybe she is feeling abandoned? I wonder what her reason is. I hope they work it out.

Maybe she is just a really big USF fan.

The articles I'm seeing say that the family hopes he'll reconsider Miami because it's convenient for her to go see games and be closer to home. I can understand the second reason, the first reason is a little, well weaker. I realize that's a big deal (and part of why we're trying to build the Tampa fence), but if the kid wants to go away, he should go out of town or state. It's still his life, not hers.

  2. I thought I remembered someone saying on this board a while ago that NCAA bylaws required that ALL recruits have a guardian sign the LOI regardless of whether they are over 18 or not.  Not sure what the real answer is there, but maybe Alex and his mom can compromise on a school still "away" from home but in the same state and within driving distance for games......

If only we could push USF to the mom. I wonder if she'd take it. Who knows if FSU is close enough for her. Florida might be.

  3. You know what I'm most impressed about this guy? He is smart...has a 4.0 GPA and wants to study engineering. If football doesn't work out for him professionally (and it's extremely possible that it will with his intelligence and work ethic), he will still have an opportunity for a long and successful life. That's the kind of maturity that is just ideal and hard to find in an 18 year old.

  4. Remember that the Big 10 is only taking AAU members.

The only AAU members up for grabs are:

    -Duke

    -Georgia Tech

    -UNC

    -Pittsburgh

    -UVA

If they want to get up to 16 members to keep up with the other conferences while only including AAU schools, they're going to have a tough time of it. Duke, GT, and UNC would much rather be in the SEC, I'm sure. That leaves them with Pitt and UVA for 14 members, so eventually if this "super conference" thing does happen they're going to have to bite the bullet and consider schools with a "x-year AAU membership" plan.

Edit to say that the B1G also already has one non-AAU member in their conference: Nebraska.

Yes, but from what I understand Nebraska was booted out of the AAU after they joined the Big 10. It did make a difference in their entry.

  5. There was nothing like rushing the field after beating WVU. I got my photo taken with Mike Jenkins that night, and I still have it on my phone five years later (despite it being an old photo on a 1.3MP camera).

I remember that entire game, start to finish, including the four hour drive to get there that night...and the three hour drive to get back. And keep in mind-this was from New Tampa, not Orlando or something!

  6.

I'm sorry I'm not wearing the G&G goggles on this hire.

Some people seem to think NFL automatically means results in college whether recruiting or on the field. Remember Bill Callahan or Mike Sherman? It really all comes down to results. Hes statistically had some of the worsts defenses in the NFL consecutively and that team he coached to the SB was known for its explosive offense under Gannon and Rice and got pounded by the Bucs.

Connections can get you anywhere in life.

Umm his defense wasn't that bad at oakland top 10 for a few years.
One has to really wonder how that game would've been if the Raiders were smart enough to change their play calls/signals - but I'm sure at the beginning of the year they didn't think they'd make it to the super bowl and if they did that they'd face the bucs.

21 points were scored by our defense. On the DVD it shows Lynch telling Jackson where they were most likely going to throw the ball.

I have the Bucs Super Bowl DVD too ... Lynch didn't just do that ... he actually called out the exact play that the Raiders were lined up in - they had run it in practice the week before, and Gruden actually ran the scout team as QB and mimicked Rich Gannon to a T.

The Raiders were the best opponent the Bucs could have had, mostly because Gruden knew them inside and out as well.

that's what i was getting at. even if they were only to meet in the regular season, the staff that was on the raiders should have changed up their play calls. even if they only had two weeks to do it before the superbowl, they could have tried. the raiders defense wasn't terrible by any means that year - they did get to the super bowl and i think they beat the patriots on the way there too. their signal calling fubared their offense into gifting the bucs 21 points - otherwise that's an entirely different ball game (and i like the bucs but hey that's how the cookie crumbled that day). 27 offensive points on bresnahan's defense isn't great but not terrible (there were some short fields too).

That's not entirely true. They didn't have two weeks back then. The bye week prior to the Super Bowl was introduced the year after with the game between the Patriots and the Panthers. The Buccaneers played one week after the NFC championship game.

  7. Regardless, if we actually land Cooper, I'll be ecstatic. This guy has coached two Thorpe award winners at LSU as well as the Honey Badger. His track record prior isn't quite as good, but perhaps he finally gets it. This could be a huge, huge home run hire...he's miles more talented at coaching than the previous crap we've had coaching the secondary (cough...Rick Smith...cough).

  8. Yes MV. They recruit by building a monster at their HS. Families move on purpose to be in plant HS's zone just so their kids can play sports there. They have a great baseball team too. You think all those talented ball players just happened to live right by plant HS? LOL. I lived in south Tampa. That's how it works.

And cross country too! Mike Boza left Jesuit to try to rebuild Leto, and got sick of it so bad after one year he ran to Plant where he could get paid better to teach AP psychology, plus coach a fantastic cross country team.

  9. Educate me as how this will lock down recruiting in 2016.

    Good question.

recruiting is all about relationships. Weiner has them not only with Plant high school where I'm sure they will hire someone he recommends but he also has them with other area high schools. great hire for what amounts to a position coach.

Jesuit and Plant have had a bit of a friendly series going on the past few seasons. Both of the Evelds were involved in it. I doubt the connection changed anything, but we may be keeping at least one Eveld on the roster next season as a walk on at least.

  10. Is it wrong to say that at some level, I'm rooting for Matt Floyd to win this competition if we don't have a top notch freshman coming in next year?

Two years ago after Eveld beat Miami I thought he had potential. Now it's been made apparent that he's a one hit wonder. Floyd has some head, but the team did give up last year. I can't help but wonder if he can be an excellent QB with better coaching.
