  1. It's impossible to have this conversation without mentioning Leavitt or our other coaches. But...

Unfortunately, Leavitt jaded some fans into believing that we can find a coach that will stay here even if the Alabamas of the world come calling, but that was because USF football was his baby. However, that is not the post-CJL reality. And no, Leavitt isn't coming back to coach USF. CJS would've probably also left had he found success here to coach somewhere in SEC or southern ACC within the good ole boys club. I mean, even coaches like Fickell - who is Ohio born and raised - is ready to leave Cincy for Wisky even after all the program growth and invite to the P5 that he generated. I know it doesn't sit right to think of your alma mater as a 'stepping stone' school, but that is what USF is to the CFB world once you step away from the USF bubble. However, that is not necessarily a negative thing for the program; we can sustain success in the AAC-CUSA based on our recruiting location alone. The central Florida region is ripe with high school players that are able to beat whatever Tulsa and ECU recruit with natural talent alone, the way that Taggart did it, and the way that UCF has done it 3 coaching changes in.

That said, we can either hire an unproven coach like CJS who swears he will be here forever - even though he probably won't - for the sake of 'consistency' (I think we have just seen this is a terrible gamble this is) or we aim to hire someone who is a proven head coach that is openly trying to move up on the world but will probably do well coaching USF while they are here based on prior success. What is the better choice in terms of Ws and Ls?

12 team playoff should only help entice just about any coach towards USF.

Probably the best thing that could've happen to all upper G5 teams.

You could definitely argue that we can make the playoff run if it's the top 12 teams.

We do have that. Everyone needs to stop the hyperbole regarding VPMK. The man is a true credit to the university. We are VERY lucky to have him. The hire he made in CJS was well-informed and got rave reviews; it just didn't work out. There is always that risk. Sure, we wish we had the string of successful hires the school up the street has had, but the level of risk was the same for all the hires.

    Unwarranted extensions to awful coaches?

Will USF ever invite CJL back and do a Ralph Friedgen type day like Maryland did in 2019? I tend to doubt that will happen until CJL is 70+,  if ever in his lifetime.

I don't think it's so much "will USF invite Leavitt back" as much as it is "would Leavitt want to come back" to coach at the university that ruined his name and that he sued?

Seems like everyone thinks the shoe is on USF's end, but that might not be the case at all.

USF did Leavitt dirty and the football program is the worst FBS program in the country. Why would a man who is enjoying a semi-retired life decide to pick up the immense stress related with USF football right now after what the institution did? It is time to move on.

I agree he should come back to be recognized in some way but those who are saying it's 'head coach or nothing' seem to forget it's his decision as well, and he probably still has justified hard feelings.

Would be happy with Deion, though of course it would be obvious he would be on lease from FSU and gone the first solid season. Would mean VPMK would need to maintain a running list of candidates for the inevitable moment he bounces.

This is our new reality, unfortunately. But if he leaves after a handful of years, it means he won a lot in a short time span while creating a lot of buzz due to his persona. Probably the best shot in the arm that the USF football program can get right now.

Don’t you all dare speak bad about xCSH or xCCS either. At least those former coaches have top 25 wins lol

For the record Taggart beat #21 Temple in 2015 and #22 Navy in 2016.

Maybe take a step back from the whole top 25 thing.

I appreciate zarnoz telling us that then MK just has to do his job.

I mean, seems like a tough ask sometimes.

But my point went more along the lines of “being a stepping-stone program doesn’t necessarily mean ‘doom and gloom’ as shown by the replicable success of c.”

And then we replace Prime Time in 2024 with Warrick Dunne or Christian Ponder (my favorite)?

That depends. Can they recruit and coach the way that Sanders has proven to do extremely well -especially recruit - while carrying a high-profile name?

    If so, then yes.

At this point we need to accept who we are. Yes, we will most likely never find another lifer like CJL was in 1996, but let the guy enjoy his well-earned sunshine and Bucs/Lightning games rather than thrust him into the awful situation that is USF football right now. Especially for a university that fired him, engaged in a lawsuit with him, and basically ruined his name. Don't think he'd be thrilled to take up the opportunity, so let's face reality.

But if Sanders leaves in 2024, it's because he was able to win immediately. That would be more than an ideal outcome based on where we are right now. It would be up to VPMK to keep the momentum going in coaching hires the way our former little brothers out east have been able to do repeatedly and successfully.

If they can do it, so can we.

Except Taggart didn't go over .500 here and has failed at every other stop since he left. Taggart only went over .500 at Oregon and left for FSU. He isn't even .500 at FAU.

Taggart proved all it takes is awesome recruiting to succeed here. Now that it’s known that he’s a snake, recruits don’t want to play for him like they did when he was a babyface HC at USF. He’s had to rely on Xs and Os since leaving Oregon and he has been mediocre.

People still mentioning cjl..give it a rest. Man it’s getting old as him. He is not coming back to usf football ever. He wasn’t the guy then and isn’t now. Passion doesn’t win championships. We never won with him and we weren’t going to. Outcoached in every big game and same teams we lose to every year.

Ohh boy. Prepare for the wrath of the old timers.
