CWT got the $$ and prob lots of it to boot. But-he failed at the game he supposedly loved. This is one of those shoulda woulda coulda moments: had he stayed at USF 5-6 years and built us into a winner or a conf championship then he could have taken the big money and tried the P5. Oh well...that thought was an exercise in futility...

He got paid and I don't blame him. At least he had an offense that was fun to watch in year 2 and a defense that could stop someone.  Year three the team improved and he took the money.

His success  and has far outweighed all four coaches failures. Taggart  is the only one debatable here but he has looked terrible every job since then.

His success was still mediocre.  He won zero conference championships, just like every other coach we had.  His teams flamed out mid-season, every single year.  It escapes me why so many long for those days of mediocrity.  Was it better than right now?  Sure.  Would I want to return to those days of frustration and heartache when Leavitt's teams would crap the bed every year? Hell no.

There is a reason that he has not been a head coach since he left USF. And that reason is, he is not very good.

If you are referring to me, than yes, I was around for those days.  I have been around since the beginning.

Interesting, if true.  Not many that were around in that era have that jaded perspective.  Those that did, were rightly embarrassed thinking anybody could do better than the guy that started the program.  Their mouths were loud and ignorant and we're all paying the price to this day.

I guess after 23 years we're happy you found this site.

Leavitt only seems great, because the coaches that have come after him have all been garbage (except for Taggart).  Compared to Holtz, Strong, and Scott, Leavitt seems like Lombardi or Belichik.  But when you step back and look at the big picture, Leavitt didn't win anything. His teams always disappointed. Zero conference titles. The occasional big wins over FSU, Auburn and WVU were fun.  Destroying ucf four years in a row, was a ton of fun.  But if success is measured on winning championships, then USF football has yet to employ its first great coach.

Yeah, that's a dumb definition, especially for a new program. Thanks.

Independent first six years.  Two in C-USA and then in the Big East at 8 years old (for 5 years).

We were beating the big boys , were ranked, he built us from nothing to power 5, and we got media exposure. He is the only coach we have had that brought a packed house and the excitement to the stadium.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
