If so, why can’t they manage their budgets well enough to not have to cut the jobs of some low-salaried administrative staffers during the summer? https://www.tallahassee.com/story/sports/2020/07/10/fsu-athletics-department-eliminates-position-cost-cutting-move/5412223002/

It’s just like anyone who is rich that files for bankruptcy. Take it for me, universities are the worst in managing their money and their cost centers do not reflect the needs of their clients. I think they are making millions, but they also waste millions...sloppy. USF has been sloppy tossing millions around because ”that’s the market”. I hope that fiscal sanity returns to college athletics, but it is unlikely.

Agreed. Probably because it mostly is, or feels like, other peoples’ money.

I am empathetic, As Patrick Ewing stated “sure we make a lot of money but we spend a lot of money too”. Profound and thought provoking, it is a heavy cross to bear, I for one am praying for all of the big programs in this difficult time.

Soon after hiring on, they built a beautiful new building and we moved to a multi-room, all glass testing center. We set up two rooms for computer testing (a new thing in the nineties) and ordered twenty computers and associated network hardware. They were delivered and sat in their boxes for at least five years. They were still there when my friend left years after I did.

Other people are losing jobs. Now, we’re paying almost $1000/credit hour for my son at Arizona State to take classes on the laptop. Even in the class room, it’s not worth $1000/hour plus fees, books, parking, residence. It’s a business model to dream of. And to have all the other money to run sports teams, recruit internationally, travel... But they have a P5 football team and a basketball team expected to be Top 10. So it must all be worth it! Anyway, I’m rambling out loud....

Either way I agree that the cost is ridiculous but to a certain extent they have the market cornered so we pay it.
