Actually, I would say that the rise of MBB came under Lee Rose, the coach just prior to Paschal. Prior to Rose's arrival, USF had a record of 87 wins and 99 losses. Prior to arriving to USF, Rose, in 5 years of coaching (3 years at Charlotte and 2 years at Purdue) won at least 20 wins in every year. He also took Charlotte and Purdue to the final four in his second year at each school. After, the final four appearance at Purdue, he came to USF and went 18-11 in his first year, after the team went 6-21 the year before.

Rose never had a losing record at USF. He is the winningest coach in USF MBB history, by percentage, at 106-69. Although he did not make an NCAA appearance in his 6 years at USF, he became the first coach at USF to beat ranked teams, and he took them to several NIT appearances. If he did not leave for the NBA, he would have probably taken them to multiple NCAA appearances.

I would say that the rise of the program began with Lee and 2 players, Tony Grier, followed by Charlie Bradley. Rose has to be one of the most successful college coaches to never win an NCAA championship.

Excellent history! I didn't know about all of this!

If we could afford 45K, doing it our way, we'd be doing it. We're building what we can afford at where we are now .... and I still don't believe that stadium capacity has been, or will be, that high of a priority for potential future conf homes ..... SMU (32K), UH (40k), UC (40K)

Remember, Big 10's Northwestern is actually REDUCING their stadium size in their future upgrades.

The document is a starting point for the project’s entire 615,404 proposed net square feet. The 35,001 units labeled “spectator seating” include 12,101 for bench seating, 6,940 for students and 9,992 for priority chairbacks. There are 20 loge boxes (four people apiece) and “living room box seating” (10 boxes of eight lounge seats).

The stadium club adds another 19,890 square feet for everything from lounge areas to concession stands and a “parents lounge” next to the family restroom. There’s also a field-level club (11,370 square feet) and party patio (8,875 square feet).

Public restrooms cover another 27,550 square feet — 233 units for men, 282 for women and six for families.

The main concourse spans 100,000 square feet with “drinking fountains throughout.” That’s notable because at least one USF trustee has made a crack at how rival UCF’s stadium did not have enough when it opened.

Each corner of the stadium would have its own plaza fan service area of 10,000 square feet.

The plan calls for 65 traditional cooking concession stands and 65 labeled “tradition non-cooking.” A 4,000-square-foot kitchen and 3,000-square-foot commissary are also under the dining/retail section, along with a team store (2,500 square feet) and three novelty stands.

Sounds good... Let's break ground this month lol

no rational person believes OCS alone will propel USF into the P4, just like no rational person believes stomping Syracuse 45-0 in the 2023 Boca Raton Toilet Bowl to go 7-6 on the season in & of itself makes USF a “sleeping giant” in the state of Florida. likewise, AAU status— probably the most important of USF’s credentials— is not enough to get USF into the big boy’s club on its own or we would be in a ****** conference with a bunch of Texas schools not named UT or TAMU instead of Florida Central.

no single accomplishment or initiative or quarter billion construction project is getting USF into a more relevant conference.

it’s going to take ALL those things & more to get USF out of the minor leagues.

the real question here is a simple one to answer: does an OCS improve USF’s chances at catching a ride on the next conference realignment? absolutely.

facilities are a key component to any growing program looking to be competitive. it shows conferences the university has a vested interest in growing the school’s athletic brand & reputation. it shows that USF isnt content having a mediocre mid-major program that plays in-state bowls against some 6-6 P5 underachiever every few years. nobody spends $350M on that.

it also matters to recruits & players. yes, pro-stadiums have an appeal but the luster wears off & players may not feel ownership of the building the way they would if the stadium were a 10 minute walk from their dorms.

thats an underrated element in the NIL/Transfer Portal era: it’s not just about impressing high school recruits with brand new facilities & a vibrant campus life, it’s about fostering a sense of home & ownership that will KEEP those players on Fowler & not in the portal.

RayJay is like renting your first apartment after moving out of your parents’ place. an OCS is like buying a house. now USF can sell players on building that house (or the history & traditions that take place inside it) & decorating that house with trophies & banners & the names & numbers of players who built a legacy in that house.

& one of the best parts of owning a house is hosting parties & reunions & get togethers with relatives. an OCS brings alumni back to campus, keeps us involved & invested in the growth of the program. WE get to build our tailgating & gameday traditions & they will have NOTHING to do with pirate ships & skulls! & sometimes when u host Holiday dinner at your house, your rich aunt & uncle see the hard work u put into making that house a home & might fit the bill on the in-ground pool u want to build, or the privacy fence u want to put up…

getting donors back on campus where they can see how their money is being spent will be a massive boon that RayJay can never provide to the program.

then there are all the tertiary benefits: potential stadium jobs for students that are right on campus; the capacity to host large events & concerts; sponsorship money for different areas of the stadium complex; collaboration with/investment from corporate partners etc.

it has the potential to be a home base not just for all things USF Football but for USF student & alumni culture. Come to the Bay, Stay in the Bay? sheeeit, come to Fowler stay on Fowler! 😅

the OCS absolutely needs to happen & the list of benefits of having a home for USF football on campus only gets longer & longer the more i think about it.

    This is very well written.

And honestly, just take a peak at Temple (even when they were good). Let's not end up like them.

I’ll bite. There are less than 1000 people on earth that are impressed by this stadium and all of them were going to be going to the games anyway.

No one honestly believes this will have any impact on a conference and stadiums do not generate a single penny for anyone else in a conference (they rarely are a net positive venture for anyone unless they got the tax payers to pay for it).

The only reason anyone thinks a stadium is a determining factor is because our fans made fun of the bounce house for years and being sensitive to that they sold it as a determining factor.

This idea has been mostly internet fodder and no conference has ever suggested or proven in action that they care about an OCS.

If any other program said they spent $350 million on this, called it state of the art and said it was going to help get them called up there would be no end to the laughing and every other fanbase is going to laugh at us equally as hard.

We found a way to build a below average stadium just like UCF (except we didn’t have to) but hey at least we found a way to do it more than a decade later and for 5x cost, so obviously better.

Everyone always thinks their baby is beautiful and special, but a lot of babies are ugly, unremarkable and just cost a lot of money while destroying your life.

    Nah, you're wrong.

Everyone knows that we need to win on the field.

However, if we are competing with other successful G5 programs; we absolutely need an OCS.

100% it does. Does not impact the potential of the program to perform, but overall I think it has a huge effect on fanbase. My wife visited her corporate headquarters in Birmingham towards the beginning of the season - the only thing people spoke about in office was who was driving to Tuscaloosa for the 'Bama game that weekend. People in Tampa have a lot of choices when it comes to spending a Saturday afternoon. That's part of the reason why I think moving to an OCS will actually HELP attendance, I think we will be better situated to capture fans who are even slightly unaligned with downtown Tampa/St. Pete - people in New Tampa/Land O Lakes/Lutz/Temple Terrace. We might (and should attempt to) become the biggest event of those communities come fall/winter while wooing the Tampa businesses for the luxury suites/clubs.

Arguments to justify an OCS are basically unnecessary...

Every recently succesful school has one... and some, are in an area with a large professional stadium

ACC will more than likely end up being the 3rd best conference behind SEC & big ten. Something will eventually happen but by then hopefully USF is ready which means both football & mens hoops better be strong imo

This is really the best option.

If we can remain in the top half (winning a championship within the next 2-3 years)... Keep our attendance up, while showing progress of building that OCS.

We could step up in priority over Memphis, UCONN, and (SDSU, Colorado St, or UNLV)... Tulane, however, just looks great right now.

What I've heard is that the expectation is that the PAC-2 will cease to exist (Wazzu and OSU will likely join the MWC), so two G5 conference champs will make it in for the next two years. After that, it's anybody's guess, but we're probably looking at a 5+7 setup (although the SEC and B1G have proposed 12 best with no auto bids, a proposal that seems to have little support among the other conferences).

    Got it!
