You absolutely do not want to run a 4-6 against navy. 1 missed assignment and then house. Nickel turnes into 4-4 with the safeties playing the alley and having no pitch or read responsibility. Works quite well, just gotta tackle.

But, lets be fair and compare how we did against each offense. We held Towson 5 points below their average, Syracuse 6 points below their average, NIU 10 points below average, and ECU 6 points below average. Cincy scored 3 above their average and the FSU game was 17 above their average. So, while we haven't played many "good" offenses, we have held 4 out of 6 opponents below their season average.
That's fair. Lets keep in mind Towson not only had their starting QB knocked out for a week or so, but holding them 5 points below their avg against FCS teams is actually disturbing. NIU has also been playing with a back up QB. Not to mention, Cuse got shut down by Wake. While they have a very solid defense, it brings their average way down and does not in anyway reflect how we played defensively against them.
With that said, I feel as if Woodie is average as a DC. The loss of Tom Allen was huge, and I believe we really would've seen a dominant defense his 2nd year here.
-
Bringing in a co DC at this point would be fairly useless. While Woodie has done an OK job so far, I still can't help but think Allen would've made the necessary adjustments to keep us in that FSU game. It's easy to compare stats when we have played one good offense so far. I hope Woodie figures it out for Memphis

Let's be real. They scheduled it for Monday because they want to see the USF Uconn game. That and they were waiting for the Houston loss to have an excuse not to invite them

Whenever you have as pourous of a run defense as we do, there are generally a multitude of problems. Setting the edge (more so to VJ side) hasn't been perfect. The bigger problem has been when teams go trips and spread one of the LBs out to the slot, we are leaving 5 in the box. Also, LBs are filling the wrong gaps consistently allowing for chunk yardage. If you go back and watch the TD run up the middle against ECU the drive they finished by running the same play 3 times in a row (late 3rd I believe) auggie was the only LB in position pre play. To make it even worse, he stunted outside the left tackle leaving no one to make a play after the rb broke the LOS.

I like the idea of 5 down defensive lineman but what we really need is to recruit more big DEs. Eric Mayes was supposed to be that and now hes an injury away from starting OT. We are undersized and our smaller DEs arent getting pressure for some reason. Need Tramal Ivy.
We are using a "mush rush" on the edges to not allow running lanes for the QB. This is very common in base nickel/match schemes that preach bend but don't break.
Also, the 5 down lineman wouldn't really help as a base front, there are definitely some times we could use it

I legitimately don't think it had anything to do with running the score up. The offense was stagnant in the 2nd half outside of the Rodney Adams big play to go up 2 scores. I truly believe coach T was going with the, we are going to be out here until we do it right, or they turn the lights off on us approach.

I could be wrong, but I was under the impression a targeting call can't be overturned in regard to the 15 yard penalty assessed. The review is simply about the ejection of the player
-
You're the man! Does anyone have the ability to do a cut up of a "just the plays" version?
-
Hector was in there as well. Not the first time we have ran this. Considered our "heavy" package
-
As much as I have killed our defense for lack of adjustments, we did began to use some 3 LB sets against ECU in running situations which is a start. I'm hoping to see a lot of Cecil Cherry this week and against Navy

In fairness, nobody has stopped that guy. NC State was the only one to hold him under 10 catches. South Carolina, UCF, Western Carolina, and us weren't able to hold him down.
Besides, I'm beginning to believe that him catching so many balls is bad for ECU. He had 17 catches the first two weeks of the season, and ECU was 2-0. Since this streak got going, they're 0-4.
That's fine, if we really weren't worried about him we should've been able to stop the run.

Jimbo made Richt look like CSH. Running Walton between the tackles? Unable to get him to the edge? No bueno for them
-
Yeah it's great we won, but we HAVE to adjust better. They threw it to him all day. He's being projected top 50-75 for next years draft. Make them win elsewhere. We didn't.
Im very happy with the win, but I'm not going to act like we werent a 2 pt conversion away from being tied with a team with a back up QB that lost to UCF. That's not the standard this year

If we don't run a 4-3 against Uconn, I'll lose my mind
edit- we also only had to stop one guy today, and he had 18 catches. Eighteen.

I'm kinda liking what I'm seeing in Sawtelle too. It looks like he's coming along well, see him making good tackles and seems to be in the right place when he's in.
Definitely very athletic. Kid can chase the ball

Where has Vincent Jackson been? Don't recall hearing his name called at all this season.
Been starting at DE opposite of Livingstone.
To further rage about the soft zone coverages and refusal to adjust to power running schemes, it truly seems as if we are playing a "mush rush" at the DE position, especially his at edge. Essentially engage and read with the responsibility of contain, not allowing him to get upfield forcing the DTs to be soely responsible for pushing the pocket.
-
I'm sure I'll be labeled as a hater, but QF still left some big plays on the field. Kinda weird to see him improve in the intermediate game, but struggle with the deep ball. He missed Mack and Adams deep a few times. I know he's not going to be perfect, but we almost need him to be with this D

Idk, this class is stacked with RBs. Depends on his projection. I'm guessing it's 3-4 round atm.
Yeah in a normal year he'd be gone, but with this class he'd be smart to stay. He'd be lucky to go 4th round honestly

The best stop all day was when their RB (not sure if it was Cook) ran into their own #69 and fell down from the impact
Funny thing is later on that drive we took a safety off the field and brought in an extra LB and stopped Cook at the line. Shoudve been the gameplan from the start
