I don't know who USFRaider is, but you are solely off the reservation, my fellow Bull. Were you following Bulls football when Leavitt was coach? The man is a legend and has been successful everywhere he has gone. He learned some valuable lessons during our mid-season slides regarding overworking the players and temporizing the effect of emotional volatility on 18-to-21 year-olds. He hit a hump there around the 2007-2008 era and realized what it would take to overcome and just didn't get the chance to capitalize on those lessons. He has now spent time in the NFL at San Francisco and several high-level P5 programs out west and has no doubt learned an awful lot from that experience. Hands down, without a doubt, the man would become our Bear Bryant.
If my jump out of medicine and into business meets with remote success, I would aim my major donations someday at naming our future stadium's field Jim Leavitt field. A pipe dream for decades from now, but a dream which remains intact and within (extended) reach.
You are nearly the only (highly vocal) negative voice in the conversation.
Well said...all of it

Great, he built the program and he will always be remembered for that. But he is a mediocre head coach and is a coordinator at best. He only SEEMS like this legendary Lombardi/Bear Bryant type figure because of the garbage of Holtz and Strong to compare it to. If 8-5 seasons are your measuring stick of success, then great, he is the guy for you. But if you want conference championships, and New Years Day Bowl games, then its time to bring in someone who can help fill our dust-collecting trophy case.
OK...we will wait for your suggestion for the hire. You think there are ace top flight prospects that are beating down our doors? There are loads of guys that are going to bring us conference championships?

Has Brad blocked you for admitting that?
LOL....not yet. Should I expect to be?

If you like 8-5 seasons and no conference championships, then by all means, bring back Leavitt. The goal this time around should be to aim higher. I would rather have 10 and 11 win seasons and conference championships for a two-to-three season coach then a retread that will keep us in perpetual mediocrity.
He built a program, made it nationally relevant and put guys in the NFL immediately.
I’ll admit, I was one of the people at the time that was starting to think that Leavitt took us as far as he could and maybe we needed someone else to get us to the next level....not unlike the Dungy/Gruden situation.
That said...hindsight is 20/20 and it was a mistake to get rid of him. Hands down.
He is a legend here and he’s accomplished a lot since he’s left. I believe he will be better than ever this time and he will assemble a top notch staff.
I don’t think there is another choice to make right now. If he will take the job it has to be his.

I suspect much of the fan base checked out after 2017.
There were so many red flags.
We want to slow down the offense.
We haven’t looked at any of 2016 film.
The San Jose State game.
This was the worst of them all. I’ll never forget this quote....how could he have not watched it, much less admit to not watching it.

I can’t get on board with Lane Kiffen. It doesn’t feel right to me.

I do not want Taggart. Not at all.
If he comes back here it can only be in one capacity....as a member of Coach Leavitt’s staff. Never as a head coach here again.

I’d like to see Shaun King stay with the program. It would be a mistake to let him go. He will fit in well on Leavitt’s staff!

I hope you’re right. The more I allow myself to think this could happen, the more I like it.
Look at the places he’s been since he’s left here. He’s gotten a lot of great experience. He’s made a ton of connections and he knows the Bay Area as well or better than anyone.
MAKE IT HAPPEN USF!!

I'd bring him back just to close the divide, reverse the bad decisioning and free Woolie and Gennie of any conscience issues (that's a joke, they don't care). Anyone paying any attention knows it was a railroad job. Miller and family were known liars. McMurphy was a fired and vengeful reporter for AOL Funhouse. Woolie felt even more emasculated around Leavitt. The "most powerful man in the building" line was a creation - never spoken by Leavitt. They wanted him gone, some donors wanted him gone. It killed the fan base more than go 9-3, 8-4 in the Big East and more than the lowly AAC. Need to reverse the nonsense, don't act blind to it. Fix the problem one way or another.
This is the first time I’m starting to feel some real momentum and legitimacy to the possibility of him coming back.
I would love to see the decision makers and influencers (donors) get together and truly discuss this as a legitimate scenario.
The other question is...does anyone know Leavitt and would he consider it?

I understand that too and he is older, but he almost seems like a Monte Kiffen type. I think he eats, breathes and sleeps football. That and he seems so have a ton of connections, I think he’d assemble a top flight staff.
I’m generally the kind of guy that says “you can’t go home again”....but man....Coach Leavitt was and is all passion. He doesn’t seem to have lost an ounce of passion and work ethic.

How do you feel about it? You seem to be pretty connected to the program.

I was at a UF/FSU watch party last night. Was chatting with one of the players from the original/inaugural Bulls team and the topic of Leavitt came up.
He said he absolutely loved playing for Leavitt and that he fully believed that even after all this time Leavitt would come back and do great here. It’s hard to imagine....but I’m starting to actually think about it.
Why not? The verbiage says “he can’t apply”...it doesn’t say “he can’t accept an offer”.
All I know is that in hindsight, the day Leavitt left, he took the soul of the program with him.
We need to get some of the original guys back here in some capacity. Those original Bulls teams had that “it” factor. I like the fact that Grothe and QF are apparently expressing some interest. There was a buzz and excitement around the program that’s been missing for a LONG, LONG time.
I understand the “get new blood” mentality, but I also like the idea of injecting some excitement and pride back in the program from the guys that put us on the map.

Count me in as a “die hard” that’s out if Strong remains. This program is an embarrassment and I won’t watch one minute next year if this guy comes back.

Zero reason to do this. Either you're moving on from the Strong era or you're not. This gives you the worst of both worlds, you have to pay Strongs buyout and you keep his culture and coaching tree.
I wouldn’t consider KB part of his “coaching tree”. They didn’t come up together.
-
I have no idea what this means. I guess I’m too old to decipher it.
Love Grothe and Q, but have no idea what they are saying.

This next hire will be the make or break for this program. It is truly sad how far we’ve fallen. We are less relevant than AskJeeves.com...remember that??
** I was trying to think of something that was relevant back when I was in school. That’s how effing long it’s been since USF mattered to anyone other than the 25-30 people who post up on this board every week.
USF Football has become the epitome of wasted potential and momentum. **** it makes me sick.

This program is getting exactly what it deserves. Zero support.
It is a disgrace. At one point we were exciting and had the whole world in front of us.
We are a f**cking shadow of our former selves. I’m embarrassed....and I’m starting not to care.
I graduated 2001...4 years in to the program. The honeymoon is over.
USF Administration....wake the F up and do something. We are 1/2 step away from complete irrelevance. I’m disgusted.

Say what you want, it would be much better than our current situation.
There is less than a 0% chance of either of these things happening.

Lets not kid ourselves. They are still ahead of us, at least in football until they are not.
We dont even know who will be coaching our team next year.
That said i am loving the Knat losses this year.
I think you misunderstood my post...my point was UCF is on an uptick and USF is becoming less relevant by the day.
Jim Leavitt Factor....

This entire idea that coaching in Florida brings easy talent is a fallacy that’s proven not to be the case. Yeah....Florida is a hot bed. You know that...I know that...so does every single school in the Country. It doesn’t make the Head Coach position at USF easy. We have sucked for a long time with several different coaches.
UF, FSU, Miami and all of the smaller programs in this state have up and down periods.
This program, USF, needs a guy that knows the Bay Area inside and out. Period. Jim Leavitt was and is a master recruiter that BUILT THIS PROGRAM...literally from nothing.
To write him off as some mediocre coach is just ignorant.
