  1. Shapiro didn't graduate. He spent 5 years at USF, and never completed his degree. If there's a silver lining to Shapiro and his relationship to USF, it's that he's not technically an alumnus. Speaking of alumni, we have way too many people that graduated from USF during the pre-football years that would rather follow one of the Big-3 simply because they grew up as a fan, have family that attended, or whatever other excuse such a person can drum up. These kinds of USF people make me sick. The reason you're getting paid in whatever vocation you chose is because of your undergraduate degree and combination of graduate/professional degree from whatever institution you went to obtain those. And I agree with you, Mutiny, this kind of donor could have been welcomed at USF. The compliance people at USF, however, are pretty vigilant about gifts provided to athletes. I don't think that USF would have allowed this type of Shapiro-type culture to proliferate for 8 years like UM did. But that's just my speculation. Pretty vigilant about gifts provided to athletes? UM allowed it to "proliferate" for 8 years? Let's focus on the first part. If you bother to analyze the ALLEGATIONS, let alone the much smaller subset of what was actually PROVEN, you would see that there were not many "gifts provided to athletes". Think about what you are saying, before you just use vague language to equate various kinds of behaviors. I don't disagree that it is possible to be "vigilant" when players are receiving actual items of value, or money. But that is very different from a guy (supposedly) picking up a check at dinner or allowing guys to stand in his VIP section at a club. Even think about the UNC situation vs. the Miami situation when it comes to picking up a check. UNC was able to identify what happened when current players were sending out tweets and FB updates which gave evidence that they were in South Florida enjoying the beneficence of others. Nothing of the sort happened at Miami, and it was years later that Shapiro himself provided some "traditional" photographs, many of which were misleading. As just one example, the guy with the "photographic memory" told Yahoo that multiple pictures of himself on the football field standing next to UM players were taken at the UM-OSU Fiesta Bowl, yet the players were all wearing the wrong colored jerseys and the background of the photos clearly showed the Orange Bowl architecture. So feel free to elaborate on how USF's staff can be so vigilant of every single meal, club visit, and weekend activity of 85 football players, when they are not posting anything on social media that gives an idea of what they were up to. However, when a player IS stupid enough to provide evidence so easily, Miami was quick to take action (see, generally, Ray Ray Armstrong). As for your "proliferation" comment, it's just not backed up by anything real. Shapiro was shady and obnoxious. Big cities are filled with people like that. Randy Shannon didn't like Shapiro, but he had NOTHING concrete on which to base that. The true amount of money that Shapiro paid to UM, in contributions and tickets, is small. He never finished paying for the ROOM he sponsored in our new Athletic Center. The infamous bowling tournament photo that he took with Shalala was something that he sprung on her, which is why she is showing surprise and excitement at the event, because nobody was expecting a contribution or a big oversized check. At the end of it all, Shapiro wasn't given a lot of special access. The other infamous photo of Shapiro standing next to the tunnel before our players came out? He got that by bidding on the opportunity at a fundraising auction. He had that kind of access one time in nine years, because he won a fundraising auction. The access to the crappy old press box at the Orange Bowl? All Hurricane Club members above a certain level were previously allowed that same access to the tiny rat-trap that we used to call a "press box". It's simply time to de-mythologize all of the nonsense that has built up. Shapiro had above-average access compared to the average person inside of the stadium, but it was nothing special based on his donor level and the fact that he won a fundraising auction once. It's embarrassing after-the-fact, but there are plenty of boosters with far more access at many other programs across the country, and occasionally those boosters get arrogant and/or abusive. Welcome to big-time college athletics. We should be getting our punishment within the next couple of weeks. At that point, I'm sure that some of our rivals will be disappointed, but hopefully people will read the entire report and realize that most of what Shapiro alleged was never proven. The Yahoo article sounded horrible, but the stuff that was actually proven was much less. Some of that is due to the limitations period and the fact that the NCAA couldn't compel former players to speak to them. Some of that is due to the fact that Shapiro lied and exaggerated at every turn. I have no problems with taking our punishment, so long as it is based on things that are actually proven, and not the ridiculous Yahoo article. Three facts for you.... 1). Miami booster was recruiting high school kids with hookers and blow for 8 years. 2). Miami booster was giving sloots, abortions, narcs to the team for 8 years. 3). Miami is screwed. Your mother was a hamster and your father smells of elder berries. I fart in your general direction. That's how bad it is going to be for Miami. Bonus Fact: NCAA is about to go no lube on the ibis. here's the only fact: 1. you have no idea what a fact is. None of us do, including Mutiny. Seriously? I just think it's funny how quickly some of you choose to dismiss my comments.
  2. Will probably happen this week or next. We have a light schedule for the rest of September and a moderate schedule for October.
  3. It's a recent development. We are "permanently" reducing capacity for the regular season college games, unless it involves the Gators and their demands for more than 30K tickets to be allotted. Lots of folks are trying to talk to Shalala about on-campus improvements. It's funny, because at least one thing has transpired that gives me reason to believe that UM is clearing a footprint on campus to build something sizeable. Anyhow, I think that nobody wants to comment until the NCAA case is over. However, our AD has finally agreed to put an indoor practice facility onto the wish list, which is a major step forward, particularly since we have so many issues with lightning. Look, we're damned if we do, we're damned if we don't. We have 8,000 full-time undergrads who pay the Athletic Fee (part-timers, grads, law, and med don't have to pay), so if we build a smaller stadium or reduce capacity, people try to make fun of us. But then, if we fill the stadium with South Floridians who didn't go to UM, we're accused of having band-wagon fans. Oh well...I'll welcome the haters if we can build a 55K stadium on campus.
  4. Just remember that your good pal, Hurricane Mutiny, was trying to give you the "read between the lines" hint that you guys should keep recruiting Alin. I knew he wasn't going to be a Cane months ago. I know, I know, this internet stuff is all guessing, I don't have any connections, and I don't really know anything. I'm probably completely wrong on everything I told you about the NCAA case. Alin's a good kid, we just had 2 QBs rated higher, and they both gave us verbals. Good luck, USF fans. And while this is the recruiting board, I'm wondering how y'all feel about the upcoming game. Heck, I might even break my longstanding habit of skipping the USF games in Ray-Jay and show up. Take care, gents. If you keep your eyes and ears open, we might be shaking a few kids loose over the next few months. We do it very politely, but, hey, that UF victory is opening up some minds of some highly rated recruits. Spoke to a bunch of them at the game during halftime. Saw a lot of smiles and enthusiasm. Y'all better start reminding the recruits that Louisville is going to get KILLED in the ACC without Teddy, same way that WVU is in the Big 12 without Geno.

  6. Ummm. this is a USF board . We usually talk about OUR team here, if you don't mind. if you want to talk about UM there is a " State of Florida College Athletics Board which is available for those discussions. Thank you. That's funny, since I got a very nice e-mail from one of your board moderators telling me that I was welcome here, even though I'm a UM alum. And this thread is about Alin Edouard, who is currently a UM verbal, but we do not anticipate he will sign with UM. This thread was started by a USF fan, and I think you guys would do very well to stay on top of Alin. Unless Brad or Malik decommit, I expect Alin to sign elsewhere in February. Until February...any of the threads on THIS BOARD may very well involve future USF players. I'm just glad that very few of these threads involve UM recruits anymore.
  7. ONLY (lol) $170,000 is the monetary value of the gifts according to CanesFan77. 8 is the number of years over which it was given/spent according to CanesFan77. But, less than $10,000 spent by the booster per year for 8 years, concluded CanesFan77. But I think what you are saying is that the picture is more like he spent a very large sum over only two or three seasons, and a very small sum the other seasons. Like 160k spent between 3 and 10k split between 5? Is that what you are trying to say? Take the median instead of the average be the median would be less than 10k. Actually, for most things I think the median is more representative of the norm. But 170k, c'mon, the violations were outrageous. Even if only happened for one year, but the university gave this guy access to the team for nearly a decade. You make a fair point on the number 8, and I'll admit my mistake. I certainly thought that the number 8 was related to the number of UM players suspended, but I could see it as the number of years too. The point that I made, though, is still relevant. Over half of the money that makes up the "$170K" total is related to two players he apparently steered to the agency he was a silent partner in. The conclusion is still a fair point, since those two players, while still a part of the overall allegations, constitute VERY DIFFERENT kinds of benefits, and justifications for benefits. Here's an example. A few years back, Tank Black bought a certain UF player a Hummer before the final bowl game, and then the player signed with Tank. Now, let's say Tank provided small benefits, say a few meals, to a dozen other UF players. The fact remains that the AVERAGE of all the benefits provided would look enormous, since there was one huge expenditure made for one player to sign with his agency. Also, let's not forget...while I am in no way, shape, or form trying to rationalize what that scumbag Shapiro did, the reality of the large gifts to the two agency signees is that the TIMING was the real problem. If Shapiro had provided those benefits LATER, such as after all eligibility is used/forfeited and the player has been drafted and signed by the agent, then there is no problem. This kind of thing happens ALL THE TIME. I hate that it happened, I hate Shapiro, and I'm very pissed off at the two players, but in the end, if they really believed that Shapiro was going to look out for their best interests, then they were probably going to sign with his agency anyhow, and he was eventually going to compensate them anyhow. Look, I agree with the premise of cleaning up college athletics. A buddy of mine directed the 30-for-30 documentary "Broke". Athletes are being taken advantage of in egregious ways and it's sickening. But it doesn't take 4 or 5 years for a scumbag to gain the confidence of a 22-year old college athlete. Some agents make a lasting impression over a weekend or an in-person presentation. The "Shapiro method" of trying to ingratiate himself with athletes has no guarantees (the loser only signed 2 UM players over 8 years) and there's always someone else around the corner who might make bigger promises (the Rosenhaus brothers). Anyhow, skipping down to your final point...the "University" did not give the guy access to the team for nearly a decade. That's just a ridiculous conclusion. I'm a 3x alum of UM, I'm a Hurricane Club member, a season ticket holder. There have always been major controls over access. At the same time, you are dealing with people who are adults and who can do what they want on their own time. When I go to the UM campus, there are limitations on where I can go within the Hecht Athletic Center. That is true even for friends of mine who give more money than I do (such as my very good friend who is the CEO of a moderately well-known company, and who was on a recent episode of Undercover Boss). While at Joe Robbie Stadium (which is not a UM-owned facility), access to certain areas is dictated by your tickets. Thus, if you buy a suite (even though some of the money goes to the Hurricane Club), you have a handful of tickets that allow people to access your suite (which is what happened with certain recruits). None of the minimum-wage employees at Joe Robbie know who-is-who on the recruiting front. As for the rest of the nonsense, such as the hugely overprinted photo of Shapiro being on the football field near the tunnel entrance, that is a privilege that he won in an auction. He was not given that privilege just for being a contributor, since he is not even close to being one of UM's larger contributors (nor was he ever). As has been proven in court and admitted to by all parties, Nevin made SOME contributions and made OTHER financial promises that he did NOT pay, such as his pledge to fund a ROOM in our expanded Athletic Center. Should UM, or other universities, offer such privileged opportunities (such as "dotting the I" during the Ohio State pre-game) to fund-raising auctions and such? Maybe not. But the reason Shapiro was on the field was because he paid for it that one time. It wasn't an "every game" access that he was given. Finally, let's not forget the Nevin Shapiro is a USF alum. Unfortunately, he grew up in Miami and loved the Hurricanes more than the Bulls. But let's not pretend that this situation couldn't have just as easily happened at USF. With USF's history, your athletic department would have welcomed a "big donor" such as Shapiro. I hate that any of this (real and/or exaggerated) happened, I hope Shapiro dies a painful death, and I hope that these kids (now and in the future) learn a lesson. But let's keep things in perspective and stick to the real, proven facts.
  8. I assure you that we will be penalized. And while some may scoff, we have already been penalizing ourselves, with the bowl bans, not to mention the uncertainty and the ability of other universities to dirty recruit against us. Over the last few years, we have struggled in recruiting. We still get guys, but we are losing a bunch of guys that we "should" be able to sign. Look at the recent interview with Luther Campbell who, even if you want to slam him, is the DC at Miami Northwestern. As he points out, a guy like Amari Cooper, who grew up loving UM, wearing UM gear, having UM stuff all over his bedroom "should not" be ending up at Alabama. Of course, Alabama is on top of the world right now. It's UNDERSTANDABLE, even if it pisses off the UM fans. I think that once we get past the "uncertainty", we will be fine, even if we have some scholarship reductions. Very happy with the class thus far. Need a couple more DTs. And we need more discipline and development. I'm happy to see Golden getting rid of the grass and glitz fixations that our players have had in the recent past. I just moved back to Miami, there are plenty of beautiful women and buildings and restaurants and clubs and scenery, but you can't get sucked into that when you're 18 and are 4 or 5 years away from being a millionaire WITH HARD WORK. Too many UM players have gotten distracted over the past decade. Too many have grown selfish and haven't stayed true to their original gifts and work ethics. Looking forward to seeing the changes.
  9. He has a phonetically-spelled Twitter handle. Darn Mutiny, who knew you could use "phonetically" in a sentence. You must have made class that day. We moved on from AE ages ago. Lot bigger fish to fry. Seriously? I have 3 degrees from a Top 40-ranked university, and you're worried about me being able to use "phonetically" in a sentence? I understand the timing. But if you notice, we just got a verbal from Malik Rosier today. So AE might be back in play at some point.
  10. OK, I am confused by your math. First, let's look at the denominator. The alleged $170,000 number was supposedly spent on 72 players, 3 recruits, and 12 family members, correct? So shouldn't your denominator be 87, and not 8? Second, let's look at the numerator. Supposedly, over $90,000 was spent to sign Wilfork and Rolle to representation contracts. Supposedly, $50,000 was paid to Wilfork halfway through his final season at Miami. So that would leave less than $80,000 to divide between 85 recipients, correct? The point is simple. Assuming the truth of the matter asserted, nobody defends what Wilfork or Rolle may have done prematurely in the pursuit of their professional careers. But to try to divide $170,000 among 8 individuals who were suspended under the NCAA amateurism rules, when most of those 8 were shown to have received less than $1,000 of benefits apiece, is simply misleading. Love us or hate us, let's just try to stick to the facts.
  11. Pete was certain that he was going to be able to sign Butch, but then Butch's UNC severance package got in the way. I won't lie, I found the debacle amusing.
  12. And just because you say Miami is a rogue program does not make it so. We've made mistakes, but we are no rogue program.
  13. Exactly. I told you guys that we weren't going to get hit as hard as you wanted. The Florida Bar has opened an investigation on Maria Elena Perez. Don't be shocked by a settlement of the NCAA case. You had absolutely NO idea that the NCAA was going to **** up like they did. GTFO with your "I told you so's ..." Actually, I did. I didn't know they would acknowledge it, and I didn't know the SERIOUS extent of it (i.e., Maria Elena Perez double-billing the Bankruptcy Court and the NCAA for her time), but I knew that what the NCAA was doing was impermissible (at 2 separate times). After the December 2011 Bankruptcy Court depositions (when UM settled with the Bankruptcy Court), we knew that an NCAA investigator had improperly tried to gain access to the Bankruptcy Court proceedings, including the depositions. Since all of those depositions were with individuals that the NCAA could not compel to testify, it wasn't very difficult to see that the NCAA was using the Bankruptcy proceedings to gather information and question certain individuals that it did not have the power to question, particularly under oath. Also, when the "ultimatum" letters were sent out last fall (the letters that told FORMER football players who could NOT be compelled to appear before the NCAA investigation committee) that told players that Shapiro's allegations would all be treated, presumptively, as true unless they appeared before the committee, I knew that was also a breach of NCAA guidelines (the author of the letter was subsequently fired). While I have been pleasantly surprised by how forthcoming and honest the NCAA has been about admitting its wrongdoing, I have had plenty of information as to both the NCAA's overreach and UM's cooperation to accurately predict (for over two years now) that we would NOT be punished on the level that all of our rivals have been predicting and hoping for. Fortunately, the NCAA overreach is so bad, that Miami may end up with even less of a range of penalties than I predicted. Don't be mad. I haven't allowed 2.5 years of "Miami is going to get the death penalty" postings on this board to bother me. I told you we'd get off lighter than you thought, and I had multiple reasons for believing that.
  14. No just makes it better for UM to get him Yep. And now Denson is taking an OV to Miami. Interesting times. Kirkland will sign with UM. That's my guess, but people said the same about Todd Chandler & Elkino Watson, 4 stars in Dade Co. But they signed with USF. I don't know if the impending sanctions sway the kids who grew up watching & loving the Canes, but it may nudge a few over the fence. I'd think UM would some closure on the topic, just so the unknown is killed. UM getting OC Coley is likely a boon, as well. We've scored some good OL this season, but he seems like he'd be a good add to our class. P.S. Good call on the funny FSU probability goof...guess the Garnett & Gold see 45% as "worst case". Here's the thing. I'm not saying you didn't do a good job of recruiting with Chandler and Watson. I'm just pointing out that those weren't exactly the same kinds of situations where UM was recruiting a kid hard, all along, and with no complicating factors. Todd Chandler was an early commit for UM, but something came up, and we parted ways. It was what, 6 or 8 months before USF got a verbal from him? It's not like we were recruiting head-to-head down to the wire for Chandler. As for Watson, we weren't even offering him early (regardless of the final star ranking). A few months before NSD, he didn't even have an offer from UM. Yes, we jumped on him late, even got him to visit, but I can certainly understand why a kid ranked that high might not swoon over the late attention. Again, not a 1-2 year head-to-head/down to the wire recruiting competition. And you used to have Kevin Patrick as a coach. Stay on these kids. Recruit to the echo of the whistle. You never know what can happen (see, generally, the recruitment of Kellen Winslow and/or Seantrel Henderson). But try to be rational and realistic too. Best of luck on NSD. Especially if "no chance at all" = 45%.
  15. Exactly. I told you guys that we weren't going to get hit as hard as you wanted. The Florida Bar has opened an investigation on Maria Elena Perez. Don't be shocked by a settlement of the NCAA case.
  16. You have to love warchant. It's the only place where "almost no chance" is actually calculated as 45%. OFFENSIVE LINE Denver Kirkland 6-4/334 Miami, Fla. Booker T. Washington STATUS: Currently open TOP OFFERS: Miami, among others. What a difference a few weeks makes in the recruiting world. FSU was sitting in a good position when James Coley was at Florida State and now the trend has started to head down since Coley left. Despite his relationship with Ira Denson and FSU offensive line coach Rick Trickett, FSU has almost no chance to land him. FSU CHANCES: Miami: 55% | FSU 45%
  17. Lawrence Dawsey (FSU alum) does not have a "great relationship" with Donnell Bennett (UM alum). Dawsey has a longer period of time recruiting Coley because UM's former WR coach was not on Coley hard due to academics and attitude. If FSU wins out, it's because they had a much longer effort and didn't lose the position coach. We shall see. UM is not afraid to play freshmen WRs, so Coley will have a great shot at UM if he so chooses.
  18. So you think Woulard will be a great QB, but Miami has nothing to offer in that regard. Interesting. You are aware of the existence of Kevin Olsen, correct?
  19. Only surprise on that list was Vandy. USC folks thought they would make the cut.
  20. You do realize, we will sign him as a tight end. what's your point? Oh, gosh, I have no idea. How about pointing out to the original poster that his excuse about not being able to sign more WRs is moot when the kid is a tight end. I think his point was more so that you can't expect to get them all, wether its as a te or a wr But he specifically mentioned WR. Right now, you have 1 WR verbal and 0 TE verbals. So I don't understand the comment which, essentially, writes off a guy this early in the recruiting process as if you are stacked at WR and couldn't expect to get the guy. It's funny, the F$U fans like to accuse the UM fans of downplaying things when F$U gets a verbal from a kid who also had a UM offer. I'm just confused, because some of the guys at the beginning of this thread were acknowledging that Travis is underrated. And he definitely needs to play TE, not WR. That's all. I laughed when the one poster acted like there is a certain "type" of player who wants to go to UM, and that is somehow different from the "type" who goes to USF. All I see is a very talented and underrated TE from Tampa who chose to go to Tight End U and play for a former tight end. I just think you guys need to recruit your own backyard harder, as Golden seems to be able to pull the Tampa talent that he wants. Best of luck to you guys in the BE this year.
  21. Hilarious. Those Hurricane guys laugh in the face of death (penalty). Will you buy me a beer so we can have a few laughs when UM doesn't get the death penalty?
  22. You do realize, we will sign him as a tight end. what's your point? Oh, gosh, I have no idea. How about pointing out to the original poster that his excuse about not being able to sign more WRs is moot when the kid is a tight end.
  23. Hilarious. Dammit, look who's back, oh ye of the upcoming Death Penalty. We really missed your insight HM. And I missed your insight on the "death penalty" we won't be getting. I think it's hilarious how much others are getting played by our PR strategy. I enjoy how we are messing with everyone's expectations ("we don't expect the NCAA to take action until after NSD"). This is why I laugh at you guys who treat every newspaper article as absolute truth, while you reject everything else as internet speculation. Look, we will get the NoA before NSD. The NCAA investigators did their jobs. They turned up some additional stuff related to assistant coach frequent flyer miles benefits being given to family members of basketball players. It's not going to take the NCAA an additional year to draft the NoA when the investigation phase is essentially over. No more players, coaches, or administrators are scheduled to speak to the NCAA. We will likely get the NoA during the football season, and then our response/NCAA hearing/announcement of penalties will probably stretch past NSD. But we will have a pretty good idea of what the NCAA found/what kind of penalties we can expect before NSD. Best of luck to you guys. Seems like we have a shot to out-recruit you in Tampa again, even with our limited scholarships, but we'll see where it all shakes out in February.
