Shows how stupid MB really is when he says "Were the Big East opponents THAT much better than the AAC ones?....hmm WV, Pitt, Syracuse, Louisville and even Rutgers are way better than the teams that replaced them.

Yeah even if W-L record aren't stellar, the tradition and fan base those teams brought with them + the name recognition of playing them for the casual fan is waaaaay different.

I feel dirty even remotely arguing for ucf, but I'll make it a G5 argument to ease that stigma.  I will also agree that opponents matter, BUT the same argument was made last year (and rightfully so) and all they did was go to a NYD bowl game and beat a top ranked SEC opponent who happened to be the only team to beat the eventual National Champs (the real ones not the fake ones to the east).  At some point what happens on the field has to matter and not just what people think will happen.  If not then stop pretending the G5 schools and the P5 schools are in the same Division and separate them and crown 2 separate champs.

Of course, ucf isn't going undefeated so it doesn't matter.  😉

College football is facing a similar issue European soccer is. Both are stuck in systems that were created a loooooong time ago, and because of tradition are slow to change.

Nobody wants to see Alabama play ULL or Troy, or even a USF or UCF to some extent. Just like nobody cares when Manchester City bend over Cardiff or Swansea. Yes there are some stories in both sports of rises and falls, but for the most part the same dozen (or less) institutions have dominated the landscape for decades.

The powerhouses are going to create super leagues and play other powerhouses, and keep all the money. I dont know what could have been done differently when USF had its shot (in the Big East), but I think it stings a little more knowing they had a shot to establish in the top 64 (both on the field and off) and never really got it going.
