  1. USC was founded in 1880, there was no, "Southern California" culture at that time.

    History

Los Angeles was a rough-and-tumble frontier town in the early 1870s, when a group of public-spirited citizens led by Judge Robert Maclay Widney first dreamed of establishing a university in the region. It took nearly a decade for this vision to become a reality, but in 1879 Widney formed a board of trustees and secured a donation of 308 lots of land from three prominent members of the community – Ozro W. Childs, a Protestant horticulturist; former California governor John G. Downey, an Irish-Catholic pharmacist and businessman; and Isaias W. Hellman, a German-Jewish banker and philanthropist. The gift provided land for a campus as well as a source of endowment, the seeds of financial support for the nascent institution.

When USC first opened its doors to 53 students and 10 teachers in 1880, the “city†still lacked paved streets, electric lights, telephones and a reliable fire alarm system. Today, USC is home to more than 33,000 students and nearly 3,200 full-time faculty, and is located in the heart of one of the biggest metropolises in the world.

That settles it for me.  I would agree then that it is a direction school.

Can you please solve that whole chicken and egg thing now?

  2.

I don't think anyone beyond the confines of this blog and it's UCF trolls even knows what a "directional school" is. It is a made up concept designed to keep limited minds in their place. Means nothing to anyone else. Is USC a directional school? How about Northwestern? What about North Carolina State University? West Virginia?

It's really not a difficult concept to grasp. If the title indicates a directional placement of a school within a state it has a directional nature in title and is therefore a directional school.

USC is indeed a directional school; it's a great example of why you cannot blankly say "directional schools are crap." I think we're a pretty good example too.

Why directional schools get more flack than, say, metropolitan schools is beyond me. Why isn't Pitt the "University of West Pennsylvania" and why is it OK to only be named after a mere city?

P.S. No, North Carolina State University nor West Virginia are *not* "directional" schools. The name of their state has a direction in it! I don't remember seeing the state of "North Texas" anywhere, but "North Carolina" is real.

I always question this comparison.  USC is named after a region of California is it not?  If we were located in Miami I think we could make the same argument about our name.

  3. I feel better, but I don't think the talent is as "bad" as most around here do.  Taggart changed the USF offense completely.  Completely different players are needed.  For example, last year we barely used a traditional fullback and now it is a key position on the offense.  Last year we often didn't have any TE on the field, now we have two or three.

If someone had come in running a spread offense we'd have looked a whole lot better.

Still, Taggart seems to have upped the quality of recruiting and has a definite method to his madness, which one could argue wasn't there before.

Finally, I hope one day soon we can stop preceding every topic with Holtz bashing or Leavitt loving.  CWT is the coach and the past is the past.

    This is pretty spot on.

  4. The whole forcing conference championship game is a BS rumor created by the "expansion guys" to explain expansion.

Trust me, this would have been addressed well before they all signed the ink on a lengthy deal for a playoff.

That doesn't mean the Big 12 won't expand, it just won't expand because of the playoff. An 11-1 Big 12 team has a legit chance of making the playoff. Championship game or not...

I do not think it is that simple.  A lot of what goes into rankings is perception of one's body of work.  It remains to be seen whether having a conference game screws an Alabama and allows an Oklahoma to take its place.  In an ambiguous situation, someone will get screwed, or feel as if they are getting screwed - thus upsetting the apple cart.

I am not saying this guy is not right about his information.  It sounds like he is spot on about our chances of getting in the B12 in the near future.

  5. if white is qb of the future

you just cut his future down by one year and put him in situation where he will get slaughtered and hurt his confidence

to play him on roa,.mid week night game=disaster

the statements coach t is making we are desperate and all the qbs on the roster suck

coach t better recruit 2 qbs for next year

    Hurt his confidence?

These guys are not China dolls. He was successful in high school. He will be ok.

Try not to over think things its impacting your grammar.

  6. That's for your opinion 94. I gave mine and I'll stick with it. He's made 4 changes at qb in 7 games. I know what this last one looks and smells like to me. I hope White lights it up but Im starting to question this coaching staff.

I am not sure where you are coming from with this.  These guys play the games on TV and stuff.  It is clear to everyone that we are depleted in certain positions and that the prior regime left the cupboard bare.

This was always going to be a rebuilding year and those are never pretty.

    Positives I see are:

    • the defense has come to life again.
    • Special teams have never been better that I can recall.
    • The running game (non QB) was actually a threat for the first time since Andre Hall.
    • The tight ends are actually getting balls thrown their way.
    • Recruiting impresses and is one of his main focuses.

We are struggling at pass blocking, QB position and WR as far as I can tell.  If you can't see that and what he is building here you might never see it.

  7. There is no statement.  He has four players in a position and the other three are not cutting it or are injured but it makes sense to play Mike.

    • This helps if the kid is actually pretty good. If he stinks we are no worse off - consider that.
    • If he is the QB of the future he will get meaningful playing time even if he stinks now he might learn something for later.
    • It helps in recruiting QB's.  If you are a QB and want to play next year and Mike stinks you have to like your chances.  Even if he is good he could get hurt and you are in.
    • Helps recruiting other positions for same reason as above.  Willie will play you early.

There is also a small chance, so small I am dismissing it, that he is good enough to score a touchdown once in a while on offense.

The other side of the argument is that in four years (or so) our awesome QB will graduate?  Mike was Willie's very first commit.  I like to see how he does in that regard in the next three years before I second guess this move.

  8. Funny I seem to remember a lot of complaints on here when a certain redshirt was lost during the Miami game last year. Nobody is up in arms about that anymore huh? Taggart didn't want to lose the redshirt but I'm ok with it. He needs to see what White has now. Why go into next year not knowing?? Can he do any worse than our current QBs who only score TDs for the other team?

Ha ha, this is a great post.

It will be awesome if in FOUR years we are upset about this move today.

  9. Taggart announced in his post game radio show after being questioned by Louk & Robinson that White would start at Houston.  So what happens when the 4th QB of the year doesn't lead us to any offensive TD's.  Will people on here finally admit that it is the dropped passes and lack of pass protection that are getting these kids beat up?  I hope we put up 40 vs. Houston but really don't think that will happen.

I agree. This team is depleted on offense. That is clear.
