  1. Be honest, could have played it Saturday night without any problems. Barely rained Saturday and well, the tempature was better than most October days, but the call was all the Big East's, not USF.
  2. Wind gust up to 70 mph. Not exaclty a typical ride on the Kumba.
  3. Just thought I put it up. USF has canceled classes for Monday. I don't know what the schedule is like for the football team yet, but I should know soon, which I could post if anyone is curious. Mike
  4. News Unnecessary roughness? Tampa Sports Authority says force was warranted because rushing the field is illegal. Student body president says students never got that message. by Ryan Blackburn October 05, 2005 Following USF’s 45-14 win over Louisville on Sept. 24, nearly two dozen fans rushed the field at Raymond James Stadium. Afterward, debate spawned whether security personnel acted too harshly in apprehending the fans. Of the fans who ran on the field, some were escorted out of the stadium and seven were arrested, according to The Tampa Tribune. At least one student was subdued with a Taser, according to Tampa Sports Authority Director of Operations Mickey Farrel. Student body President Maxon Victor, who was at the game, said he was shocked how police and security handled the situation. “I think they acted aggressively,†he said. “I think that (police and security) ought to work on better communication between themselves because we as the students suffered for it. We heard from police officers and security that it was OK to rush, just stay away from the poles.†According to USF Associate Athletic Director Tom Veit, who said his department received several e-mails and phone calls regarding the incident, students at the game were never told they were not allowed to rush the field. Some students, according to the Tribune, complained of excessive force by officers and guards, but as of press time no direct eyewitness reports or complaints by those involved had been filed. “I certainly saw a number of people not just jump and stand there and say ‘Hey, I just fell,’†Farrel said. “A number of them went forward and went toward the goal posts, and those people were dealt with. The police used the means they felt were necessary at that particular point.†In response, members of the TSA and USF Athletic Department met with the Florida Highway Patrol, Hillsborough County Sheriff, Tampa Police and TSA security on Tuesday to reiterate that students and fans will not be allowed to run on the field under any circumstance, a long standing policy of the TSA. “We are going to rely on the University to get the word out to the students again,†Farrel said. He also said the primary reason for the policy was safety, and he cited an incident after the game in which an individual broke an ankle while attempting the eight-foot jump down onto the field. Confrontation from the opposing team and the possibility that students could tear down a goal post are also concerns, he said. According to an article from the Tribune, 22 people have died from falling goal posts. Victor said there were mixed messages during the game. “This was verified from several students who were told they could rush the field, but (were told) don’t bring down the (field goal) pole,†he said. Alec Smith, president of the Beef Studs, a group of students who exercise their school spirit by painting themselves green and gold, was one of those students. “I, myself, have rushed the field in previous games,†he said during a televised discussion on FOX 13 Friday. “We were under the impression from some of the police officers that were working down on the field that we were allowed to rush the field as long as we were not going near the goal posts. We were even making announcements to the students ‘You’re allowed to go down on the field as long as you don’t rush the goal posts.’†Farrel said out of the numerous warning signs, as well as the officers and security guards on the field, he had a hard time believing anyone felt entitled to go down on the field. “I don’t know how someone would have been led to believe that they were allowed on the field,†he said. “With the signage in place, the police and security lined up, and there was verbal communication going back and forth to the students.†But Victor said it was expected for students to run out on the field after the game. “It was expected, even from folks in the Athletic Department. From my understanding, students were told by security, ‘Just don’t rush the (field goal) pole,’†Victor said. Victor said he will meet with a representative from the Athletic Department later in the week to discuss the matter. So far, more announcements will be made in preparation for the Bulls’ next home game against West Virginia on Oct. 22, Viet said. Procedures will be reiterated to security and police before the next home game, Viet said. In addition, he said, students can expect to hear increased warnings and communication prohibiting field rushing. “We want to make sure all the students know all the rules, so we’re working on a P.A. announcement and then handouts and flyers to fans reiterating what the rules are, and we’ll do that on the Jumbotron as well as the P.A. announcement,†Viet said. Also, the Athletic Department is planning on a safer alternative to rushing the field, he said. “(The players) are going to come over to the front of the student section and salute the students. They are going to be able to slap high fives, jump up and down, cheer and be part of it (the celebration),†Viet said. Victor expressed disappointment at this notion. “The truth is, students want to rush the field,†Victor said. “It’s a common thing you do in the spirit and excitement of the game.†http://www.usforacle.com/vnews/display.v/ART/2005/10/05/4343bbfbf0ce6
  5. http://www.usforacle.com/vnews/display.v/ART/2005/09/16/432ad49d054d8 That's the first article explaining the bet. http://www.usforacle.com/vnews/display.v/ART/2005/09/19/432ee87ccfc8e That's the article saying what he did after the game. There will be no more articles in the articles which involve Ashley Burns.
  6. Sports The big birds of the Big East by John Calkins September 21, 2005 “We’re excited about continuing to play them because it’s such a good football team. We’re anxious to keep this thing going. It will be nice. It will be fun.† USF coach Jim Leavitt, following the Bulls’ 41-9 loss at Louisville last season. USF opens its inaugural Big East season against the cream of the conference this Saturday, welcoming a Louisville team that hasn’t slowed down since handily beating the Bulls last year. And the way coach Jim Leavitt talks about the Cardinals, this year’s contest may not be so nice for the Bulls. Or fun. “They are just so strong in so many ways,†Leavitt said at a press conference Tuesday. “Every single play you see is just perfect. They are just a very well coached team with a lot of talent. It’s just all there … This is a team that people are talking about possibly winning a national championship.†Preseason favorites to win the Big East, the Cardinals (2-0) are coming off a 63-20 rout of Oregon State in which they put up 553 yards, 428 of which came through the air. The Bulls have won two in a row, beating Florida A&M and UCF by a combined score of 68-17. Leavitt knows his team comes in as the underdog and said after the win over UCF that the Bulls will have to play “one heck of a game to even have a chance.†Highly touted Louisville quarterback Brian Brohm, who threw for 368 yards against Oregon State, played the fourth quarter against USF last season, hitting 7 of 13 pass attempts for 103 yards. “He throws well, he moves in the pocket well, and he understands the offense and what he needs to do,†Leavitt said. “The best thing about him is that he understands where to throw the ball. He has everybody on the same page, and that’s very important.†Seventh in the nation in scoring with 47 points a game, every part of Louisville’s offense is clicking. But USF’s defense – coming off two dominant performances against FAMU and UCF – is also playing well, and is ranked No. 7 in scoring defense (13.3), No. 5 in passing defense (117.3) and No. 8 in total defense (230.7). The biggest stat, though, is Louisville’s No. 9 ranking in both the Associated Press and USA Today polls. “We’ve had other nationally ranked teams come in. Bowling Green has come in and was ranked,†Leavitt said. “But is this the best? Yeah, by far.†http://www.usforacle.com/vnews/display.v/ART/2005/09/21/43317f6fbf8b4
  7. Bullies are the Student Spirit Club. You have to be a student to join and its 25 bucks, you get that shirt plus two others. I wrote an article on the club a few weeks ago. http://www.usforacle.com/vnews/display.v/ART/2005/08/31/4315b3aa55b87?in_archive=1 Mike
  8. Thanks guys. Also, The Oracle came in second last year as the SouthEast's Daily College Newspaper, only behind University of Georgia's The Red and Black. Depsite all the critism we get, we do work hard and sometimes having the benefit of a daily newspaper all over campus is taken for granted, so like I said, THANKS FOR READING. Felt like I've said it so many times today, but it always makes me smile to get a compliment from a reader and get recognized. I know you think we're always done on sports at USF, and we're not, but we are being watchdogs is all. That's our jobs in every section of the paper. BTW, has anyone seen the Tabloid back I've been running on Mondays? Guys who are alum, read the PDF verison. That looks even better than in print. I know it takes a while to load but its worth the wait. Just wondering what everyone was thinking. Thanks again, Mike Camunas
  9. I never was good at math, so I rounded up. Thanks for clearing it up for me. Its obvious that UCF is way ahead of USF in mathematics and general arithmetic (stifle laugh). Thanks for the compliment Mike B. Appreciate everyone reading. Been getting plenty of compliments today. Keep up the feedback. Mike
  10. I used USF's address. Sorry for the confusion. Thanks for reading though.
  11. Its either Ashley wearing a Bulls shirt with Rocky, or Mark wearing a UCF shirt with Knightro.
  12. I'll make sure either picture  Mark or Ashley  gets up here.
  13. Even though they cheer for different teams, at least they have something in common, though I don't know Sheriff.
  14. Mark, You know and I know he'll barely be watching the game, because he'll be looking for 14-year-olds in the stands, whether they are cheering for USF, UCF or Hilary Duff. Mike
  15. It was the first time at practice that either Greg or I had seen Denson line up with receiver. Leavitt claims they had done it before, which might as well be true because media is only allowed to watch the first 30 minutes of practice. That being said, Leavitt seems to want to find a way to use all three of his quarterbacks, trying to find a way to utilize all three - Denson, Hill and Julmiste - and their speed. On another note - something that had no room in today's Times notebook - Denson had a hard collison with S.J. Green after he caught a pass at receiver. Green was streaking and collided hard with Denson, who had gone to the inside of the play to take his reps at quarterback, instead of running outside the playing field and going behind the lines at the respective places. Denson and Green were not seriously hurt; both got up quickly after the collison, but Denson limped away, and at his next rep at quarterback during 7-on-7's threw an interception to D'Juan Brown, who's still running with second string defense. Mike
  16. Guess they better fire Jim Leavitt then. He coaches special teams. Opens every practice with kicking, punting and returning. Mike
