Jones improves draft stock April 10, 2006 By: Kevin Smetana Andre Hall isn't the only USF athlete spending his spring trying to improve his draft stock. Solomon Jones, who is trying to become the first Bull since Chucky Atkins in 1999 to make it to the NBA, helped lead his team to a championship Saturday at the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament (PIT) in Virginia. With more than 200 NBA scouts in attendance and 64 of college basketball's best players taking part, Jones scored in double figures in all three games, including 16 in the championship game. "My whole mentality was to just go out and play well. I really wasn't looking to score the ball, but it happened," Jones said. "I was just looking to run the floor hard, rebound and block shots." Jones, who nearly averaged a double-double in the tournament (14 points and 9.7 rebounds), made the all-tournament team and talked to scouts from the Utah Jazz and Charlotte Bobcats. "From what I heard from NBA people, Solomon really helped himself," PIT chairman Mahlon Parker said. "I do think he improved his stock, tremendously." Jones is in the process of signing with an agent, and he'll continue to work out and train at USF until the NBA draft, which will be on June 28 in New York. "From now on, I'm just going to go into a harder mode of working out. Starting this week, I'm just going to be training every day," Jones said. "No days off from here, there's no looking back." If Jones gets drafted, he'll be the first player from USF to do so since Curtis Kitchen was drafted by Seattle in 1986. And because the draft is only two rounds now, Jones will become the first Bull to be drafted earlier than the third round. Atkins plays in the NBA but signed as a free agent. Jones is confident he'll be drafted, and he feels his performances at the PIT helped him get closer to achieving that goal. "It was a good opportunity, and I just made the best of it," Jones said. Wow. I think that's the most props the Oracle has gotten in one tread. Guess I should say thanks. Now, when I started the blog, I expected to get plenty of comments and that's what I wanted. Sure, its a little strange to get "anonymous" ones. Basically, I think almost all the comments, have been, most of the ones Greg Auman and Brett McMurphy are the same. Not in that readers want more UF stuff, because the Times and the Tribune already cover UF, but that they are anonymous posts. That being said, and after the post, no there will not be more UF stuff in the Oracle. If they beat George Mason and go to the National Championship and happen to win that, then the Oracle will run that story. However, before you protest, the Oracle would also run the story if George Mason, UCLA or LSU wins it all. Its called college sports related news, and the Oracle runs it because, well just about every other paper in the country will be doing the same. Now, its true the Oracle is USF's paper, but the Oracle is not affiliated with USF. Its a independent publication, which gives the Oracle the right to print whatever it wants. We are not a booster paper, and barring what your opinion is of the Oracle's opinion section and Sports columns, the paper does report the news in a fair and unbiased manner. At the Sports section, myself and my writers will continue to cover USF sports, win or lose, while if a reader wants Gators sports, I urge them to read the Alligator or the Gainesville Sun. Its true a lot of USF students do two years in Tampa an move on, or go up north for grad school after four years. I don't fault them, people are allowed to do what they want, but what "anonymous" doesn't realize is its a lot easier to write an article about the "Cinderfellas" of George Mason, when the Alligator is in Minneapolis, and that the Alligator is the main source, actually, ahead of the Gainesville Sun, for information about Gators sports. On a side note, I do get a lot of requests to cover stuff and write articles about it. Rugby, the Ice Bulls, ultimate Frisbee, intramural sports scores, the Sun Dolls and cheerleaders, and even requests to cover more golf and track and field events. Sometimes we get to some of them, sometimes we don’t, but at the Sports section, we do try to fit in all we can. Hell, we even had a sailing article in the fall semester, and the women's sailing team practices all the way over on the St. Pete campus with their Olympic Gold medal coach, Allison Jolly. Gators are already up 1-0 on a Adam Davis first inning home run. Davis hit a homerun in the first inning of the first of two games the Bulls faced Florida in 2005.

Sounds like a low blow to the Oracle writers... hmmm, and after I did USFootball a favor. Tsk tsk. I took that class as well and Mag Pie is right, they don't check much of what you write and I got an A as well. Write about how bowl games are meant more for school promotion than for the team. It'll make you sound on the money for your argument for at least the first two sentences, which is all the instructor will read.

Brad, I know this isn't the right forum or topic, but I can't seem to find your number to call you, so I sent a message here. Tony and I have created  finally I might add  The Oracle Sports Blog, so we can keep up with the likes of the Trib and the Times. Here's the link: oraclesports.blogspot.com and we expect to see a link up there next to Brett's and Greg's blog. We'll have the usually stuff they have: thoughts, opinions, little side facts, all sorts of good stuff and we'll update it a lot more than Brett and maybe a little more than Greg; he's pretty good about his.
