Exactly! If we shoot an awful 4-17 from deep, we win by 4, everything else being equal.

It is amazing how a sport turns people into crazies, attacking others who want to see the same thing, which is to see their team win. This is why I follow sports without much emotion. For me, it is just a game. It is entertainment. Yet so many fans start attacking other fans when things don't go right or when one does not agree with another. That's the definition of "fan" for you.

United we stand, divided we fall.

flip the shooting percentages for 3's and we win by like 40.

if we both had an average shooting night(33% from 3) we win by almost 20.

just so happens they were hot and we were the exact opposite.

    it happens.

people just don't understand the variance that comes with shooting. especially 3's

Just one game. Luckily in basketball there are at least 28 games left. So i am hoping tonight was just an off night.

    that's exactly what it was.

can't imagine there will be  many nights where we shoot 6% from 3.

can't imagine there will be many nights where our opponent shoots over 50% from 3.

even with that we were still in it with a minute left.

kind of sad that people are embarrassed or that they make this out to be anything other than an off night.

Does this team have anyone who is a threat to score in the low post?  There will be games where we have to grind it out and having a low post threat will be key.

modern basketball coaches realize using a traditional post player only clogs the lane and stifles an offense.

there is a reason why teams like purdue with a dominant post player get knocked out of the ncaa tourney early while teams like fau, houston, san diego state make deep runs.

it's also why the nba doesn't want zach edey

    Hey Bull94,

I mentioned this aspect of FAU previously. They are a small team, with only their center being taller than 6'4. As you said, the other starting 4 players can shoot it with the best of them. And this is why I am predicting an upset of FAU. We match up well with them when it comes to shooting, but we are taller.

yea I think it's a different game now. protect the rim and knock down 3's. I'm excited to see the new style.

I agree with you that the industry is heading in that direction. Doesn't it then stand to reason that I should probably look toward an alternative option for the coverage I would prefer, and pay, to see?

The Athletic has written good articles on us this season and they have great CFB coverage, among the other sports that I prefer to read about as well.

I get more out of reading the posters here than I do from Baker/Knight.

absolutely. I understand wanting more specialized coverage.

honestly gousfbulls has a lot of great stuff.

I get the local paper to keep up with a broad overview of what's happening around town. not necessarily for the bulls coverage.

I just don't get why so many people complain about it. It's not in-depth bulls coverage but they do have some good stuff.

I don't agree with everything but that's ok.

Yes, I have a subscription, but I rarely read the sports stories any longer.

I do believe the complaints about their coverage, or lack thereof, are warranted at times. They can send Baker to the SEC football meetings, but not to the AAC football meetings, especially when we have a new head coach. That should be upsetting to our fans and I can't argue against that line of thinking. They can't send anyone to our road games, they can't put up a proper picture from our win at UConn. Our fans see this, so why would it come as a surprise that people are cancelling subscriptions.

honestly all those issues have to do less with us and more to do with the industry. Newspapers are going the way of the dinosaur.

It's unfortunate but that's the reality. They are cutting costs everywhere just to try and survive.

Just wait until they use AI to "write" their articles.

I’m talking more so about articles that push strongly for a rivalry with FAU or pieces against our on-campus stadium.

They do cover the Bulls and I appreciate it, but they don’t treat them like the hometown team— they’d much rather be writing about the Gators and the Noles, and they make it clear.

They write about the noles and gators because there is more demand for them in our market. blame that on our fans. not them.

they wrote the FAU angle because we were playing them that week and the AAC has that game as one of 6 that will occur every year. the aac is trying to make it a rivalry.

maybe if all the bulls fans hadn't cancelled their subscriptions they would write about us.

there is nothing wrong with asking if a $350m stadium is worth it. they question whether it is worth it for the rays as well.

I can form my own opinion about it but it's nice for people to ask the questions so that I can be better informed.

Well if he comes over once a week and sets your lawn on fire and spits in your face, I think you still have the right to complain about him.

right. because that's what they do.....

an article about why a local 5 star might choose us but is 10 days too late, according to some, is spitting in your face.

or was it the article from baker about how we can have similar success in football as memphis has had. I guess that's setting your lawn on fire.

It's warranted at times and a freaking joke at times. There is no Bulls beat writer right now so it is what it is when it comes to stuff like this .... it's a good article about the situation.

I don't always agree with their point of view but it's a dying industry. I'm glad we get any coverage at all.

What I find ironic is that there are people on here who complain about their coverage that don't even pay for a subscription.

That's like complaining about the job a guy does that cuts your lawn for free.

The article was read. This a very big deal for MBB, so it shouldn't take more than 10 days to get quotes.

It's not TBT hate as much as it's where the TBT views USF.

Considering how many on here complain about their coverage and claim they cancelled long ago, why should they consider our coverage a priority?

With as bad as the industry is, I'm just glad we have a local newspaper at all.

Do you have a paid subscription?

What's our percentage of successful conversions?

4th down percentage isn't all that meaningful by itself. different distances have different odds of success.

    for instance we went for a 4th and 16 against Bama and a 4th and 15 against FAU when down 42-14 and a 4th and 19 when down 49-14 and a 4th and 16 when down 56-14

Well, looks like we've hired a coach that believes in all that.

Math? yes that's a good thing.

we lead the country in 4th down conversions.

here is a basic chart that shows when he might decide to go for it. don't be surprised when people come on here and criticize a decision to go for it if it's unsuccessful. Doesn't mean it wasn't the right call according to the math.

You made me go and open the article. Stopped reading when I read high school coach. If he was some genius coach he'd be coaching at Stanford.

perhaps you should have read further. from the article

Kelley's math is backed up by other like-minded football progressives, including Cal professor David Romer — who did a study that found that teams, generally, shouldn't punt.

I would argue even if you get it you don't look smart.

    here is a simplified explanation.

go for it on your own 5 yard line. 50% success rate. if you fail they have a 92% chance to score.

    that's .92 x .50 x 7 = that's 3.22 points per possession.

punt from own 5 yard line. gain 35 yards on average in field position decreases their chance to score to 77%.

    that's .77 x 1.00 (100% chance they get the ball) x 7 = 5.39 points per possession.

the math says it's better to go for it.

Going for it on 4th on your own 28 isn't smart in a close game. If you don't get it and they score then you look dumb.  If you get the first down and extend the drive for points then you look smart. Me personally I would not risk a short field early in the game on a tied ball game.

smart coaches are beginning to realize that maintaining possession is more important than field position. gives you a better chance at wins.

most people are risk averse. not surprising that most people would disagree with going for it.

These calls often leave me scratching my head.  I was at Gardner-Webb game this past Saturday.  GWU down to UT Martin by 3 points with less than a minute remaining inside the UTM 20 with fourth and 2.  I thought the obvious smart play was to kick and go to OT at home. GWU went for it, got it and then scored a TD with 13 seconds left to win.  I thought the call was ballsy and worked but was still not the smart decision.  Sometimes you eat the bear...

GW converts at a 60% rate. they are 6-9 on FGs.

going for the win then against a ranked opponent was the smart decision.
