  1. Bulls lose 5-4 as Louisville hit a 2 run homer in the bottom of the 7th. Coach Erickson also got tossed out of the game in the top of the 7th.
  2. Sports Hey UCF, stop the trash talk Mark Lennox commentary April 20, 2005 Recently, a barrage of slurs has been thrown our way via the fans and writers of the University of Central Florida. The UCF Future has sent a variety of lashes at us, from calling our fan base "pinto-driving rednecks" to mocking our campus as a "four-building charter school." All this was generated from the UCF baseball team beating USF twice earlier this season. In a column titled, "There's no rivalry? Probably because you're losing to us," it's even been claimed that UCF has a better-looking campus. Well, let's go ahead and dispel these odd and childish rumors. First, the all-time baseball series between USF and UCF is officially tied at 47 games. This is not a rivalry. The definition of a rival is, and I quote, "The state or condition of competition or antagonism." In order to be a rival, we have to care about the opposition. When USF players wake up on game day and see UCF on the schedule, it's not exactly a reason to cheer. It's just UCF. I guess what The Future forgot to address in their bi-weekly penny press was the fact that their football team hasn't won a game since October 2003. "Fine, I'll accept their football argument since we haven't played yet and the fact that George O'Leary recruits quality student-athletes while Bulls' coach Jim Leavitt recruits criminals," the column reads. UCF doesn't need to recruit criminals when they already have one for a coach. Nobody needs a refresher course about O'Leary's past. It's easily one of the most embarrassing stories in the history of college football. Not to mention, O'Leary led the defense of the Minnesota Vikings in 2003 that managed to rank a whopping 23rd in the NFL. Sounds like UCF material to me. I guess good ole UCF fell for O'Leary's forgery-on-the-resume' trick again, because he said he'd turn the UCF football program around. Instead, it looks like a deer in headlights, having lost 15 straight games. The UCF Athletics homepage has a countdown until the football season begins. Can't wait to keep the nation's longest losing streak going? When was the last time you heard a school posting a 0-11 record and getting rewarded with a new stadium? Sorry you lost to Kent State and Buffalo, here's a new stadium. I'm not saying USF's football program is stellar -- I mean come on, it lost to Army. But at least USF's football program got in the win column. The UCF football program should apologize to the seniors on the football team last season for posting a giant donut in the win column. So UCF basketball made the NCAA tournament for the second consecutive year, having to leapfrog "powerhouse" Gardner-Webb for the Pathetic Sun title. If teams like Oakland can get an automatic berth, I wouldn't brag too much. Yeah, so you "almost beat UCONN." Sorry, almost only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. The Knights would have needed a steady supply of Depends to make it through the Conference USA last season and probably would have lost to lowly Southern Miss. Now, back to baseball. The USF Bulls rebounded from two close losses against the Knights dominating them in all facets of the game Tuesday night. Freshman pitcher Blake Tillett pitched a strong 5 1/3 innings. USF blew the game wide open with a six-run third inning, slamming UCF pitcher Ray Rodriguez in the process. Perhaps the icing on the cake was UCF's seventh inning error-fest. First and foremost, make it a point not to mock the intrastate university when your own baseball team can't field a routine fly ball that could have easily been caught on the little-league fields of West Tampa. The two errors by the UCF Squires led to two Bull runs. USF lost two games to briefly -- and I stress briefly -- nationally ranked Knights by a total of four runs. Tuesday night, the Bulls pasted the Knights for nine runs on eight hits, including a grand slam by Joey Angelberger. You haven't swept the Bulls since 1995, and I'm not banking on it happening any time soon. As for the future, have fun recruiting almost stellar athletes from Bithlo.
  3. I just e-mailed the sports dept. at the St. Pete. Times about the current enrollment figure. Maybe they will print a clarification in an upcoming edition.
  4. TAMPA - Former South Florida quarterback Marquel Blackwell is considering an offer to return to USF as a graduate assistant on the Bulls' coaching staff. ``He's done enough for this program to deserve a shot if he wants one,'' USF coach Jim Leavitt said. Blackwell, a four-year starter at USF from 1999-2002 who holds virtually every school passing and total offense record, said he is weighing his options. If he accepts the position on USF's staff, it would mean in all likelihood his professional playing days are over. Undrafted out of USF in 2003, Blackwell signed with the New York Jets and played in three preseason games, including one start. He was cut before the start of the regular season, but then brought back to be the third quarterback when starter Chad Pennington broke his wrist. That lasted three days, then he was cut again. In 2004, Blackwell was on the Tampa Bay Storm's practice squad and later attended a three-day minicamp with the Bucs. ``I only want him to take it if he feels he's done playing,'' Leavitt said. In other USF news: Freshman reserve receiver J.B. Garris will not play this fall because of academic reasons, Leavitt said. He might return for the 2006 season. Garris, of East Bay, had eight catches for 129 yards last season. Leavitt added that sophomore Eric Thomas, who moved from defensive end to tackle, and freshman offensive linemen Matt Huners and Jake Griffin are having impressive springs. Also, sophomore Jared Carnes of St. Petersburg has moved from tight end to offensive tackle.

  7. By Edgar Huang May 7, 2004 The Department of Journalism and Media Studies at USF St. Petersburg is now accredited by the Accrediting Council in Education and Journalism and Mass Communications. The council's approval came on April 30 at its meeting in Cambridge, Mass. "Accreditation says we've stood up to a very rigorous inspection and assessment," said G. Michael Killenberg, director of the department. "I'm very proud of our faculty, staff, students and alumni for helping us grow to the point that we were ready to be accredited," he said. "We all share credit for this landmark accomplishment." The department becomes the first academic unit in the history of USF St. Petersburg to gain separate accreditation apart from USF Tampa.
  8. Dickson scores 34 as USF wins home finale By GREG AUMAN, Times Staff Writer Published February 27, 2005 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TAMPA - From the opening seconds it was clear it would be an easy home finale for South Florida and a big game for sophomore forward Jessica Dickson. Point guard Anedra Gilmore lofted a pass that Dickson caught and banked in for a rare women's alley oop, an auspicious start as the Bulls cruised to their fifth straight win, 70-43 against Alabama-Birmingham. "When we came out and hit that, I thought we'd get off to a good start," said Gilmore, who was recognized with fellow senior Alana Tanksley after their final home game. "That really pumped us up for the rest of the game." Dickson needed 15 points to become the first USF player to reach 1,000 as a sophomore, and it took her all of 11 minutes. Her 15th point gave the Bulls a 21-5 lead, and she hit 11 of her first 13 shots, finishing the first half with 26. She finished with 34, the most by any player in Conference USA this season, and drew cheers from the Sun Dome crowd of 710 when she left the game with 7:20 remaining. Even with her career high of 36 one shot away, she was content to have two more years to chase that and the school record of 39. "That was an unbelievable first half," said coach Jose Fernandez, who considered keeping Dickson in to go after LaTonya Greer's record, set against Cleveland State in 1997. "Had this been a neck-and-neck tight ballgame, she could have scored 40 or 50. The way she was shooting the basketball ... was really unbelievable." The Bulls (19-9, 9-5) will be the fifth seed in this week's C-USA tournament in Charlotte unless Marquette (8-5) pulls off an upset at regular-season champion DePaul (12-1) today. USF likely will need at least a second-round upset of Houston or Texas Christian to receive an at-large bid to the school's first NCAA Tournament. Dickson and Gilmore scored all but three of USF's points as the Bulls led 37-19 at halftime. The Blazers (7-20, 4-10) needed 7:08 to score their first point, and Dickson, building a strong case for first-team all-conference honors, followed with a personal 13-2 run. Crystal McFadden led the Blazers with 22 points, but Dickson outscored UAB by herself until the final five minutes. Her game tied for seventh best in USF history, but she deferred all praise to her teammates. "I think we're playing good basketball," the 5-foot-10 forward from Ocala said. "We're getting ready for conference, so we're going to be fired up. This being (Gilmore's) senior night and her last time to play in the Sun Dome, she was ready to play."

  10. Spring Football At Soccer Stadium? Embarrassing BRETT MCMURPHY Published: Feb 24, 2005 TAMPA - South Florida officials are considering moving the April 16 spring football game from Raymond James Stadium to the school's soccer stadium. USF athletic director Doug Woolard and associate AD Tom Veit said no decision has been reached, but they are looking into the possibility. If it happens, there's one word that pretty much sums up holding USF's spring football game at the school's soccer stadium: embarrassing. In only eight seasons, the football program has ascended from Division I-AA into the Big East Conference. The Bulls finally hit the big time, or so we thought. By keeping the game at RJS, the Bulls' marketing department - if there really is one - could hold a ``select-a-seat'' promotion. Individuals could chose their seats and lock in for five- or 10-year season- ticket plans with the allure of future games against Miami, other BCS powers, Big East rivals and, who knows, maybe even Notre Dame gets added sometime down the line. Sure, maybe only a few thousand fans will attend the spring game, making the soccer stadium a more quaint setting. Remember how quaint those trailers were? But if USF prefers quaint settings for its athletic teams, the men's basketball team would hold all its games in the Corral. A big reason USF officials want to move the game to the soccer stadium is to hold a ``Spring Festival,'' on campus, including home games for USF's baseball and softball teams. Instead why not just call it ``Spring Festivus.'' George Costanza will do the coin flip. The Sidler can shadow Coach Jim Leavitt along the sideline. The Soup Nazi works the concession stand and USF can give away thousands of green and gold puffy shirts. Then yada, yada, yada ... USF is the only one of 119 I-A schools playing its spring football game at its soccer stadium. A regulation football field will barely squeeze inside the surrounding track inside the soccer stadium and - we're not making this up - USF also would have to sod over the pole vault pit. Promoting a weekend for fans to catch a baseball or softball game and tour the new athletic facility afterward isn't a bad idea. However, instead of moving the spring game - what will recruits think of the soccer stadium? - why not tie it all in with one of USF's spring football scrimmages? There are another 20,000 reasons why USF officials are considering the move - the $20,000 it costs to use Raymond James Stadium. Woolard said the football game would be moved from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. to give fans a break from the heat. However, both the baseball and softball teams' games start at - you guessed it - 1 p.m. So unless USF recently added retractable roofs at the baseball and softball fields, those fans are out of luck. Did we also mention Big East commissioner Mike Tranghese will make his first appearance at USF the weekend of April 16? USF officials added that Miami and UCF are moving their spring games this year from their off-campus stadiums. However, Miami was forced to because the Orange Bowl is being renovated. UCF decided to move its game to its on- campus practice fields to help attract attention after last year's 0-11 season. USF following in the footsteps of UCF? Serenity now! Serenity now!
  11. This quote is really disturbing........... "If the team comes up with a little bit of integrity, I think they deserve it. When I started going here they had class," biomedical science major Sarah Ford said. "To be honest with you, I think they are a bunch of thugs. In my opinion, they are not very nice, they are not very classy and the staff is wonderful. We just have to instill some tradition, I think. (The students) deserve an on-campus stadium, (the football team) does not. Not yet."
  12. ODDS AND ENDS: In case he's hobbling around a little slower today than usual, take it easy on USF athletic director Doug Woolard. Today is his 55th birthday. ... USF's spring football practice begins March 22, culminating with the annual spring game April 16 at Raymond James Stadium. Starting junior CB D'Juan Brown will miss spring practice while recovering from shoulder surgery. ... Only one more day until heralded Miami Carol City DE Ricky Jean- Francois picks USF or LSU. Don't be surprised if he signs with the Bulls.

  14. Tampa, FL (Jan. 23, 2005) – The University of South Florida women’s basketball team tied a school record for consecutive wins at home – with nine – with its 72-58 victory over Memphis Sunday afternoon at the Sun Dome. The Bulls equal the mark originally set during the last seven games of 1976-77 and the first two games of 1977-78. In addition, USF’s 11 home wins this season (11-1) is the second most in school history. The Bulls also extend its regular season Conference USA home winning streak to nine games. Jessica Dickson (Ocala, FL) scored a game and season high 27 points, on 11-23 shooting from the field, while Anedra Gilmore (Jacksonville, FL) fell one assist shy of a double-double with 12 points and nine assists. The Bulls (14-6, 4-2 Conference USA) trailed only once in the game after Memphis scored the first basket of the game on a lay up by Jennifer Sullivan just 2:20 into the game. USF would then use 47.1 percent (16-34) shooting from the field, while holding the Lady Tigers (10-9, 3-3 Conference USA) to just 25 percent (6-24) from the floor, taking a commanding 36-22 halftime lead. Dickson would also score 16 of her 27 points in the first stanza. Memphis would come out in the second half to shoot 50 percent (11-22) from the field, but the Bulls would equal the Lady Tigers’ 36 points in the final half en route to the win. USF continues to wreak havoc on the defensive end of the floor forcing Memphis into 20 turnovers on the afternoon, which led to 29 points. The Bulls will be back in action on Friday, January 28 at 8 p.m. (ET) when they travel to Milwaukee to face Marquette, then on Sunday, January 30 at 3 p.m. (ET) when they take on No. 18/19 DePaul in Chicago. 16. Who's Crying Now? South Florida's Women's Team Is Hard To Beat MARTIN FENNELLY Published: Jan 11, 2005 TAMPA - Last year, the first day of December, was a new day for South Florida women's basketball. Even with the tears. ``There was crying,'' USF coach Jose Fernandez said. The USF Bulls were in their losing locker room at Gampel Pavilion, home of the three-time defending national champion Connecticut Huskies. How they lost made headlines in Tampa. It started a buzz about a program that five years ago carried a stigma and was given up for dead. Now USF had taken mighty UConn into overtime before falling. The Bulls made their mark. Then they cried. ``But they were tears of anger,'' USF senior guard Alana Tanksley said. ``We knew we belonged on that court. We knew we could have won. We should have won. That's where we are. I guess it's a good feeling, really.'' One that's hard to beat. Up From The Ashes That's these Bulls. They're 12-4 and 2-0 in Conference USA after a weekend home sweep against Louisville and Cincinnati. Want perspective? Until Friday night's 67-59 win, USF was 0-17 against Louisville. Cincinnati edged USF in last season's Conference USA Tournament. Sunday, Cincy didn't belong on the same court with even injury-depleted USF in a 74-56 laugher. It's the right kind of laughter. Want perspective? Only four of the past 26 USF seasons have been winning ones. Four seasons ago, Fernandez's first Bulls team went 4-24. ``It was that bad,'' he said. Now it feels that good. There's up-tempo and pressure defense. There's a team coming off the first postseason appearance in school history and headed for better days. Want to know a secret? They're more fun to watch than the USF men. ``We've come a long way,'' said Tanksley, Tank to teammates. ``Why stop now?'' In 2000, everything stopped. The USF program was shaken by racial discrimination allegations that resulted in lawsuits and the firing of then-coach Jerry Ann Winters. Fernandez was 28 when promoted from assistant to head coach - one day before the 2000 season-opener. He'd phone recruits with his dreams. Big ones. He told everyone. ``I'm sure a lot of people thought I was nuts,'' he said. Why not them? Tanksley, who is black, listened. ``Yes, I'd heard what happened here,'' she said. She became the first recruit to sign with Fernandez. ``I just believed in Coach.'' Other believers followed. Significant others, like sophomore Jessica Dickson, the team's leading scorer, and junior Ezria Parsons, its leading rebounder. And sophomore center Nalini Miller. When one falls, another stands. Take the Cincinnati game. Miller tore a hamstring against Louisville and was on crutches Sunday. She'll be out four to six weeks. A huge loss. So what happened Sunday? Sophomore Rachael Sheats stepped up and scored a career- high 26 points, including 22 in the first half on 10 of 10 shooting. ``We look out for each other,'' Sheats said. It goes beyond games. Tanksley and junior forward Sharon Cambridge have established the Create-A-Smile Foundation to help underprivileged children in Tampa Bay. Their first event was taking kids to Busch Gardens. It created smiles. So does their basketball. So does their coach. Fernandez, a true bargain - he's among the lowest paid coaches in Division I basketball - talks of a Conference USA title this season and contending when the Bulls join UConn's Big East next season. Then there's the 2008 Women's Final Four in Tampa. Fernandez grinned. ``Why not us?'' A big dream. Here's one for 2005. ``Tears of joy,'' Sheats said.
  17. TAMPA - Linebackers Brouce Mompremier and C.J. Hunnicutt and defensive end Josh Julmiste have returned to the University of South Florida and will participate in spring practice. The trio, key members of last year's recruiting class, left school last semester following theft charges in September. However, the charges were dropped in November. Former Bulls wide receiver Brian Fisher, who was taken off scholarship in August because of legal problems and attended Hillsborough Community College, also began classes Monday in his attempt to return next fall. USF also must contact the NCAA for a ruling to determine whether Fisher violated NCAA rules by playing for a private- club team last fall. All four players still have academic hurdles to clear to be eligible in the fall. Offensive lineman Danny Muy, who is transferring from Nebraska to USF, is in the process of getting enrolled this semester. Muy, from Tallahassee Lincoln, left Nebraska to be closer to his mother, Marta, who was diagnosed with breast cancer. When Muy's enrollment is complete, USF officials will seek an NCAA waiver allowing him to play next season, instead of sitting out a season, because of his family situation.
