Haha, yeah man, I remember watching Blazing Saddles with my dad all the time; he always brought up Alex Karras when he knocked out the horse, would then tell me stories how he was that tough on the field (definitely a different era). I can’t believe Skippy still has a job, haha.

And, least we forget.....Mongo and the rest sitting around the campfire eating beans and farting

I agree with both of you guys. I’m only 40 but I see it too. For me, it’s hard to judge toughness; BUT, the outward reactions from the players are not the same at all. In the 80’s, 90’s and early 00’s, almost any big play, guys would jump up and down, fist pump, just flat out be amped up. On bad plays you would see the leaders yell or get loud with their team or themselves, and now I just don’t see that passion. It’s a very sterile energy. I mean, sure, locker room celebrations happen, but not in game. Which is why I love my man Dan Campbell, he has help make the Lions fun to watch, even tho we are terrible, haha.

40??? Hell Son, I got socks older than you..............! 😂    No more Alex Karras days in the Motor City. Lions use to be tough in the old days. Funny, as great a football player as he was, I cant forget his movie role as Mongo in Blazing Saddles. Of course, the Detroit Chief of Police is pretty much a take no crap guy. Never know, once Skippy the Holtz hones his skills in the USFL he may end up the Lions coach and take them to greatness.................................or, down the tubes.

It is sad that I agree with you, that only means that I am also a salty old bastard that thinks our country is full of a bunch of pussys.  However every prior generation thinks the same way, so either we were not as tough as we thought or maybe these kids are tougher than we think. Rip  Mr. Aday, you rocked and were a terrific entertainer but unfortunately very unhealthy.  Two out of three ain’t bad, you will be missed my brother.200.gif

The generational thing and toughness is very real. Example- when we heard that CJL popped a mouthy kid that got in his face at halftime of a game I know I thought, I bet that kid learned a lesson. It's the old days. Adult men-coaches-teachers would straighten a kid out if they got mouthy or out of line. I learned. Was slapped by a teacher and punched by a teacher. Had a cop knock me upside the head when I got lippy-first and last time for that. Coaches worked you hard and some went one on one with you. But you played hard. Felt a sense of pride when you played well and your team won. Some coaches didnt mind demeaning you publicly or jerking you physically into gear when you screwed up. Nope, I wasn't happy, but I did learn from that and some of the coaching prob made me endure some BS and events in life better. Different times. Not saying these new players aren't tough. I'm sure most are tough since they are playing D1 football. Just a lot of acting out and "see me" moments in sports. Too many malcontents.

  4. In the early days of USF football seems like tougher/hungrier players were recruited. Of course, there weren't the distractions like today. Social media was a fledgling now it's a constant distraction. 80's-90's players were more like those generations that preceded them, they had to pay their dues and move up the ladder and over the hurdles to get recognition and possibly a shot at the NFL. Kids get too many accolades to early so when they get to high school/college there isn't much left for them to attain. Probably why so many fall to the wayside or lose interest or, get into trouble acting out. Times have changed and, in my opinion, not all for the better. It's hard to coach "heart" if a player doesn't feel it. When we do get a player now that is kinda a throwback, we all go on about them. Just an old guy's ramblings and, Meatloaf died so I'm bummed today. Peace-Out

I am just glad he does not fight the media which some of our past coaches did and some in CFB and pro still do today…just give the answer and save the drama queen theatrics.

Funny thought--CJS told the story on an interview how all the asst coach's kids got to be on the sideline when his dad worked at FSU. He went on to tell the story about the time FSU was playing Tulane so he and some other heathens snuck over to the opponent sideline and commenced to knock over and pile on the blue wave mascot person. Wonder if Trickett was there (prob older bro) and a part of this?? He went on to say that CBBowden was not a happy man and gave the young'uns a verbal dressing down about their behavior. Prob a pretentious bunch of little guys. Prob good they didnt run him through with Chief Winnebago's flaming spear......................

  6. I try to listen/watch interviews, pressers that CJL does. He is much better at answering things and presenting thoughts than he was say a year ago. He isn't a polished speaker but hey, as long as he can coach and suck up a drool, I'm good with it. I think he has matured some in the last year. Yes, he brings up Clemson "always". But then, he got to enjoy success there. Now on his own, he must build something. Develop a loser into a winner. I'm hopeful but then--we shall see. One other thing we must remember: he was born in 1980. Which makes him a tail end Gen X'er at the beginning of the Millennials. On one side it's the latch key, punk rock, grudge, M-tv generation vs. the "all about me generation". Good possibility we must be patient until he falls into one or the other. :vikinghorns:

What a Defensive Showing that day! Ponder went out early in the second half I think . . . hammered him that day!

Whenever that game is mentioned, I feel the need to post my CJL_fsu win poster. That was a fantastic win for USF-CJL-TEAM...BJ even got to show his abilities to his Tallahassee hometown crowd so they could ask CBB just why didn't you recruit him......................their loss or gain

Awww, you know we would all come to your aid and do a TBP Intervention on you. Hmm? unless there was a good game on tv or maybe an interesting topic on TBP...but otherwise, yep some counselling, a little drinking, some dancing and a little sex of course...hopefully, there would be some gals there too???🙄

At this point, I would bet money on this being COVID related. Probably waiting for someone's quarantine period to be up for the official announcement/press conference.

Only 5 day hideaway period now. The doc my wife transcribes for, the entire office staff had it last week and they are back to work this week-the Quickie Virus. Interesting, the NCAA has now said if a player has covid they will be considered vaccinated afterward. Amazing, the NCAA is smarter than the fed agencies and docs. Now, if Trickett had the dreaded WV Mtn Virus?? Whew! that's another ball game entirely...

I like how this thread about how it is no longer "potential" is approaching 20 pages and we still have no official announcement from USF. Never change, TBP.

Seems that the news is everywhere except.........Yep, here! The key, "Yet to be announced"

    wvu-practice-6-1384-travis-trickett-08AP

USF football has reportedly found its new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in West Virginia’s tight ends coach Travis Trickett. He will replace Charlie Weis...

Here's my take... I didn't go to USF for undergrad, but when I was a freshman in the deep south, my roommate and I collected Busch Light cans from us and everyone on our floor because in 1996-1997, they had NASCAR racetracks on them. We started by half-assing the reason as trying to collect all the tracks (though I knew nothing about NASCAR because I grew up in an urban, non-Southern household), but then we just had an insane pyramid in the hallway of our dorm suite. When we pivoted to just making some ******* pile of cans in the hallway with our suitemates we were in some number of cans that made it absurdly impossible to walk down the hall. If I had something like this on campus, we'd have taken the cans to this thing and made like $50 and just flipped it to more beer. Win win. We get money instead of throwing this pile into the trash or making a week's worth of drinking. I'm all in favor of this. I didn't care about the environment or much of anything else then, but I absolutely cared about a lot of free beer. Let someone else care about the why. I'm sure other college kids feel the same way.

Not so different, 90's-vs 60's kids in the South. We also collected empty beer cans and even the pop top tabs(historic artifact item now) however, we drank all the beer in the cans. We had a massive wall pyramid of cans and the tabs were made into curtains in the doorways. Oh, those pesky young'uns. At this point I'll trump frisco- Can I mail cans into USF and someone puts them into the machine for me??  😉

It seems like a good thing so there are some recycling habits created. Be interesting when beer cans are put into the machine at which point..the machines will be blamed for increasing on-campus beer drinking. Life is just one big "dilemma"
