  1. USF BASEBALL SUMMER BALL UPDATE

    July 16, 2018

TAMPA, Fla., JULY 16, 2018 – Summer leagues complete the second week in July and USF baseball members keep producing as the all-star break approaches.

Sophomore righty Carson Ragsdale (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) appeared in one game for the Madison Mallards of the Northwoods League last week, striking out a pair in two innings. Ragsdale is fifth on the team with a 2.03 ERA in 17.2 innings with 29 strikeouts and was selected to compete in the Northwoods League All-Star Game on July 24.

Redshirt freshman catcher Jake Sullivan (Tampa) played in four games last week for the Savannah Bananas of the Coastal Plain League. He went 5-for-11 with a home run, three runs scored and six RBI. Sullivan had a pair of two-hit games, driving in multiple runs in each contest. He is hitting .395 in 24 games with two homers, 17 runs and 19 RBI.

Junior Joe Genord (Lake Worth, Fla.) played in seven games for the Amsterdam Mohawks of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League last week. The first baseman had four multi-hit games, going 10-for-26 with two doubles, a home run, eight runs and nine RBI. Genord went 2-for-3 with a double and a run on July 14, then followed the performance with a 3-for-5 effort to close the week, hitting his fourth homer of the summer and driving in four runs. Genord is batting .278 in 28 games this summer with six doubles, 18 runs and a team-high 30 RBI.

Redshirt sophomore lefty Connor Eason (Chesapeake, Va.) made one appearance last week for the Peninsula Pilots of the Coastal Plain League. He tossed 1.2 innings, allowing just one hit with three strikeouts. Eason has 11 strikeouts in 6.1 innings pitched, appearing in four games.

Junior second baseman JD Dutka (Suwanee, Ga.) made his debut for the Norcross Astros of the Sunbelt League. He played in five games, tallying two hits with two runs scored and three RBI.

I'll go ahead and say my point still stands, solely based on the games leading up to as well as including the 2007 WVU game.  For a Tampa Bay team, I'm not sure that stadium has ever been that full since then.  That was HUGE for Tampa Bay and without Grothe, that never comes close to happening.

I just don't know if that equates to the numbers and awards that Martinez put up.

    • .399 career BA
    • 54 HR
    • 3X All American
    • 1988 finalist for the Golden Spikes Award.
    • The Award for the best player in division 2 is named after him
    • National College Baseball HOF inductee '13.

That's doing some serious work while wearing a uniform from a Tampa school. If that was a USF player, no one here would doubt his inclusion.

I think Solomon has to be there his status as a pioneer of the option QB and his 19 rushing TD's in one season would be a school record at USF.

QF<MG, just my opinion on that and I think the numbers will speak for that as well.

So MG over Charlie Bradley? I don't know enough about CB to make the comparison but I don't think its an easy choice.

Plus that 52 to 44 TD/INT ratio is kinda glaring in hindsight.

So I think with a strictly USF list, MG is a no brainer. But when you add UT, Solomon and Martinez are some pretty big names to just push to the side and then things get real nit-picky

Freddie's a no brainer to me but had forgotten about Tino (probably because of attachment to the Evil Empire) but he's definitely intriguing ...

The more I look into Freddie Solomon (before my time), I think I might replace Grothe for both of them. I just can't over look Martinez's pro career and his four rings count for something. He did also play for the Rays for the 2004 season. Solomon has a couple rings himself and his 1974 season was pretty stellar.

In the 1974 season, he rushed for a then NCAA quarterback record 1,300 yards and 19 touchdowns to go along with it. Wiki

  4. BULLS IN THE PROS: MONTES HAVING A MONSTER DEBUT SEASON

TAMPA, JULY 13, 2018 – Former USF infielder Coco Montes continues to take pro baseball by storm after being selected by the Colorado Rockies in the 15th round of this year's MLB Draft.

Through 24 games, Montes is batting .423 with three homers, 13 extra-base hits and 16 RBI for the Grand Junction Rockies of the rookie Pioneer League. Montes had an 18-game hitting streak going from June 18 to July 6 and he's produced multiple hits in 12 games, including a 2-for-5 performance on Wednesday.

Hitting was something Montes did often during his fantastic final season with the Bulls in 2018. Back at shortstop (his position in the pros), the junior batted .331 with 23 doubles, which marked the fourth-most in USF single-season history. Montes drove in 40 runs, scored 43 runs from the leadoff spot and earned all-conference honors while putting together a 20-game hitting streak.

McClanahan Talks About 'Dreams Coming True'
Sporting his fresh Rays cap, former USF ace Shane McClanahan joined the FOX Sports Florida broadcast of the Tampa Bay-Detroit game at Tropicana Field on Tuesday to talk about becoming a pro. The flame-throwing left-hander recently signed with Tampa Bay after being drafted 31st overall last month.

"I've dreamed about this since I was 6 years old, so it's just awesome to be here and be able to take in the experience with my friends and family," he said.

McClanahan finished second nationally in 2018 with 14.15 strikeouts per nine innings as a redshirt sophomore with the Bulls in 2018. One day, the Cape Coral, Fla., native hopes to fan more batters in the Bay Area as a big leaguer .

"It's a culmination of dreams coming true," he said.

    • ANOTHER SAVE FOR PETE: Peter Strzelecki, a standout starter for the Bulls this past season, earned his second pro save by pitching a scoreless frame for the Helena Brewers on July 8. Strzelecki also is 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA through 7.0 innings in the Pioneer League (rookie).
    • QUACK AN ALL-STAR: Kevin Quackenbush made an appearance in the Triple-A All-Star Game on Wednesday. USF's former standout reliever certainly earned his All-Star nod by racking up 13 saves with a 0.34 ERA through 26.2 innings.
