  7. Tampa, FL 08/30/2019 - After a lengthy off season following the six straight losses to end the 2018 season, Bulls fans found reasons to feel optimistic (again) about USF Football. The 2018 season showed some ugly sides that led to the dismissal of both players and coaches. The enigma at the center of the storm, Charlie Strong, did what Charlie does, he "cleaned house". 2019 was supposed to be different. Players are a year older, bigger and more mature. New assistants and a new offense. Players were reported to be closer to each other - and closer to Coach Strong who allegedly began revealing a personality to those around him. #PlayFastScoreFaster was a hashtag everyone wanted to use and observe. A wave of renewed optimism seemed to be sweeping some around Fowler Avenue and in the ether of the internet. But as players left the tunnel for warm ups, one thing remained the same. Little energy. A "sullen look" as they took the field - perhaps imitating Strong's version of a business look - that far off, detached and unemotional presence. A lot looked the same from that point on, save for an old fashioned player/coach confrontation on the sideline. Well, Johnny Ford was held out of the game, coach's decision. The Bulls defense was porous in 2018 and remained so Friday night. Granted, Wisconsin boasts a Heisman and, perhaps, NFL ready running back that simply had his way with the Bulls. He, Jonathan Taylor, left the game early but not before amassing 135 rushing yards and four touchdowns. The Badgers grinded out 234 yards on the ground. But the Bulls also gave up a personal record high passing yards to Badger QB Jack Coan who finished with 193 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. This was a quarterback that was dueling for the starting job with a freshman just a week ago. During one stretch in the first half, Coan completed eleven straight pass attempts. The Bulls, on the other hand, struggled to get anything going on offense, finishing the night with just 157 total yards. The Bulls new offense crossed the 50 yard line once the entire evening on their last lifeless, scoreless possession. Early opportunities were erased on dropped balls. When combined with an ineffective rushing game, the Bulls new offense failed to live up to the hype and hopes many had allowed to develop over the spring and fall camps. The Bulls finished the night with 26 rushing yards on 23 attempts. Quarterback Blake Barnett was ineffective, completing only 13 of 30 attempts - again, he didn't have a lot of help. He left the game with 109 yards and two interceptions; and was sacked three times. Afterwards, Charlie Strong lamented "It just shows you, we've got a lot of work (to do). We've still got a season in front of us and we just got to get ready. The thing I told our team just a few minutes ago is, 'You don't point fingers. Now, we've got to go back to work." It will take place on August 10 at 2 p.m. inside the on campus Yuengling Center. Fan Fest provides USF Football fans of all ages to meet players, take pictures and collect autographs. The 2019 Bulls football team will be in attendance waiting to greet fans. Last year's fan fest was utilized to debut new Adidas USF football uniforms. This year the uniforms were released just before the announcement of the Fan Fest. Also, in previous Fan Fest's there has been a gear sale included in the events.   13. 5/18/19 Tampa, Fl - The Bulls blew it all in the span of four innings. Up 3-0 and cruising through five innings, the Bulls collapsed and lost not only the series, but a chance to play in the conference tournament and the possibility of ending the season with more wins than losses. It was a genuinely displeasing day of USF Baseball. Starter Alec Wisely began strong and settled in, giving up just two hits through five innings before giving up three runs on two hits (including a 2 run home run) and a hit batsman. Wisely finished the sixth, but the damage was done - the Bulls three run lead was erased. The Bulls had scored once in the first and twice in the fifth. The first run was on a bases loaded bases on balls. In the fifth, Jordan Santos doubled home Kyle Phillips and Tyler Dietrich both had reach based without having to hit the ball, a bases on balls and HBP respectively. In total, the Bulls would manage four hits. Bulls closer, Nelson Alvarez, entered in the 7th on a gamble by Bulls coach Billy Mohl. The gamble didn't pay off. Alvarez struggled with location after he entered his third inning of relief. In the 9th Alvarez walked the lead off batter, then the third batter following a ground out. The Shockers capitalized with run scoring fielder's choice and later a three run scoring double, pushing across four runs in the inning. Alvarez did strike out five in 2 2/3.Alvarado had pitched more than two innings of relief on four occasions this season, totaling four earned runs in those outings. The Bulls finish 26-27 with 8 conference wins against 16 losses.
  14. 5/17/19 Tampa, FL - Collin Sullivan led the Bulls (26-26, 8-15) to a series tying 2-0 win over the Wichita State Shockers (25-29, 8-15) on Friday night setting up the rubber game of the match to determine who advances in the 8 seed American Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament. Sullivan ended the night with a fantastic line in a must win situation. Sullivan when asked about his clutch performance and impressive line: ""The off speed stuff, getting guys to roll over and hit things into the ground early in the count really helped me. Coming out there, we all knew what was on the line and we put everything we had into the game." He went nine, striking out seven and walking three. The Shockers were shut out on two hits. The Bulls scored two runs on six hits and two WSU errors. The Bulls runs were both plated in the fourth inning when the Bulls started the inning with back to back singles by Jordan Santos and Joe Genord. Chris Chatfield then hit into a double play, with Santos advancing to third.   15. 5/16/19 Tampa, FL - With the American Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament just around the corner in proximity as well as the calendar, the Bulls needed to take two out of three from the Wichita State Shockers. Game One tonight in Tampa put the Bulls a step back from that goal, losing to Wichita State 7-6. Baron Stuart got into serious trouble in the 5th inning, ultimately giving up 6 unearned (5 ER) before being yanked one out shy of finishing the 5th inning. The Bulls would respond with a run in the bottom of the inning, leaving them trailing 6-2 entering the 6th. The Shockers would add another run in the 6th built on a double and scored on a wild pitch. The Bulls came roaring back in the 8th as the Shockers seemed to implode. The Bulls put up four runs on two hits powered by WSU's error and three issued walks. USF's Kyle Phillip's double was the highlight of the inning scoring both Tyler Dietrich and Austin Bodrato. But, the Bulls could get no closer in the 9th.   16. 5/11/2019 Storrs, CT - The South Florida Bulls took two Saturday from the Connecticut Huskies in a couple of low scoring games. The Bulls' starting pitching stood out today. In game one, Collin Sullivan threw six shutout innings, yielding just four hits and one unearned run. In game two, Alec Wisely allowed four hits in seven innings, giving up just one Huskies run, it was earned. In the first game, the Bulls could not grab a lead until the eighth inning when Jake Sullivan singled and advanced on a sacrifice bunt. A Chris Chatfield single followed by an error allowed Sullivan to score and Joe Genord, who had gained a base on balls, to advance. Genord would score on a Brandon Schrepf sacrifice fly to center field. Closer Nelson Alvarez entered in the eighth to lock the game down, but gave up a home run to narrow the Bulls lead to one. Alvarez's second inning of work was also a little scary, but he got the final out on a ground ball with bases loaded, earning his eighth save of the season. With two outs, Genord reached on an error. Then, the Bulls had back-to-back-to-back singles by Chatfield, Julio Cortez and Austin Bodrato. UConn's lone run was scored in the third, followed by six scoreless innings. Dylan Burns came on in relief of Wisely, working two innings of one-hit ball to earn his first save of the season. Wichita defeated ECU 3-1 today with the series finale tomorrow. Both teams now have seven conference wins. The Bulls are next in action against Jacksonville University Tuesday at the USF Baseball Stadium. Members may enter a points raffle for a drawing of two tickets to the game.
  17. 5/11/2019 Tampa, FL - USF Bulls Baseball, nearly pronounced dead on arrival just three week ago, came alive sweeping non-conference The Citadel, taking two out of three from Houston and then winning the series opener against Memphis. But since that win at Memphis, the Bulls have struggled, losing the final two to Memphis and following that up with a loss in the series opener to UConn. All this while while struggling to get out of the American Conference cellar and earn a place in the conference baseball tournament in late May. The Bulls (23-25, 5-14) trail the Wichita State Shockers (22-27, 6-13) by a game. The Shockers, luckily for USF, are tangled up in a series with the American's finest baseball program, East Carolina. ECU took game one 6-1, with game two later today at 3:00 p.m. The Bulls dropped game one of the series with UConn 4-2, despite a strong start by Baron Stuart. Leading 2-1 until the bottom of the seventh, the Bulls' relievers could not contain the Huskies. Dylan Burns was victimized for four hits and three earned runs in two-thirds of an inning. Should the Bulls pass the Shockers in the rankings, they would meet #1 seed East Carolina in the first round of the American Athletic Conference tournament in Clearwater, May 21-26.
  18. The Bulls came out Friday firing on all cylinders against the Memphis Tigers, scoring nine of their ten runs in the first four innings of play. A four run 4th inning would prove to be the difference. It was a Julio Cortez bases loaded home run that drove tallied four, putting the Bulls up 9-5 after three and a half. Cortez, DH, finished 3/4 on the night with six RBIs. The Bulls scoring started in the first with a flurry of singles and a Memphis error, getting the Bulls two runs in the top of the 1st. But starter Baron Stuart, who got better as the game went on, gave up three runs in the bottom of the 1st. The Bulls picked up their next three runs in the 3rd inning staking a 5-2 lead. Jordan Santos started the inning with a single before Joe Genord stepped up and popped a two-run home run to left field. Chris Chatfield would follow with a walk and Cortez would pick up one of his RBIs knocking in Chatfield with a double down the left field line. As has so often happened for the Bulls, they surrendered another Memphis run in the bottom of the 3rd, closing the gap to 5-4 before the Bulls four run fourth. Memphis would chip away at the lead, picking up two in the 6th and one in the 7th before Bulls closer Nelson Alvarez entered the game to extinguish any Tiger comeback. Alvarez managed the final out of the 7th and then completed both the 8th and 9th for the win. A USF insurance run crossed the plate in the 9th when Chatfield doubled and later scored on a Memphis error. Most importantly, for a team short on arms, Stuart hung tough and tossed 120 pitches. Middle relievers Brandon Schrepf and Logan Lyle struggle in relief of Stuart. Alvarez faced 10 batters, striking out three and walking three, giving up just one hit. Tomorrow's game is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. but there is much talk of potential bad weather.   19. 4/30/2019 Tampa, FL - The Bulls put together six runs on eight hits, scoring in five of eight innings to overcome the Stetson Hatters on Tuesday night. Jake Sullivan and Chris Chatfield led the way, each going 2/4 with a roundtripper and two RBIs. The Bulls took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth, ultimately increasing that lead to 5-2 before start Dylan Burns ran into trouble in the 7th. Pat Doudican relieved and closed out the Hatters before handign the game off to freshman Brandon Schrepf who nabbed his first save, striking out two of the four batters he faced.   20. The Bulls, looking for their first American Athletic Conference series win of the season, took the final game in the series with a walk off home run by Alex Bello. It was Bello's second walk off home run in his freshman campaign. Bello sealed the series win delivering the Bulls a 4-3 victory in the third game of the series. Garrett Zech started the inning with a single to center. Tyler Dietrich, attempting to move the runner over, popped out in foul territory. Then on a 2-2 count with things looking bleak, Bello belted the game winner. Earlier the Bulls staked a 2-0 lead getting one run in each the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth Jordan Santos singled to start the frame. Later Chris Chatfield would single, putting runners on first and second. With one out, Julio Cortez singled home Santos. In the fifth inning, Bello scored after walking, moving to second on Kyle Phillips single then scored on a Santos ground out. Senior starting pitcher Alec Wisely had his best outing of the season, shutting out the Houston cougars for 6 2/3 innings before handing the ball to reliever Nelson Alvarez. Alvarez got Wisely out of a seventh inning jam by getting Houston's Jared Triolo to pop out with two out and two runners on base. But in the eighth, the big righthander got into his own trouble, hitting the first two batters. The next batter, Derrick Cherry, then managed an infield single followed with a throwing error allowing the first Houston run to score.   21. 4/27/19 Tampa, FL - After a Friday night win, the Bulls struggled to get anything good going on the mound or in the batter's box. Bulls starter, Collin Sullivan, gave up four earned runs in five innings. His relief, Logan Lyle, gave up three earned runs in three innings of work. The Bulls managed only six hits with four of them coming from Joe Genord and Chris Chatfield who banged out two hits each. The Bulls' only score came in the sixth inning when Jordan Santos doubled and scored on a Genord single.   22. 4/26/19 Tampa, FL - Bulls sophomore Baron Stuart enjoyed another deep outing, pitching seven innings against the Houston Cougars (25-17) Friday night at the USF Baseball Stadium. He gave up three runs early, but settled down to complete seven IP and spare the USF bulls pen. In his last outing, Stuart went eight innings, yielding just one run to The Citadel. Tonight, his line included five hits, two walks and two strikeouts. Nelson Alvarez closed it out, pitching the final two innings giving up no hits or walks and striking out three. Alvarez lowered his season ERA to 2.49. Stuart surrendered two runs in the second inning when he gave up three consecutive hits to the Coogs. With one out, Houston's Rey Fuentes doubled. Houston's Derrick Cherry followed with a single before Kobe Hyland doubled down the right field line to score both runners. Thanks to a line out and a fielder's choice, Stuart got out of the inning giving up just two runs. The Coogs also added a run in the fourth when Cherry smashed a solo home run to left center. The Bulls put up one run in the 5th inning when Austin Bodrato led off with a single to center. Tyler Dietrich flied out before freshman Alex Bello doubled to left center, scoring Bodrato. The Bulls trailed until a three run sixth put them up a run. The inning started with a Jordan Santos single. Joe Genord flied out and Chris Chatfield wallked. Julio Cortez greeted a Houston pitching substitution with an RBI single to right field. Bodrato followed with a walk before Tyler Dietrich met a third Houston pitcher. Then the Coogs' wheels came off. On Dietrich's fielder's choice, combined with a Houston throwing error, Bodrato and Chatfield crossed the plate. The Bulls added a final, insurance run, in the eighth when Bello again knocked in Bodrato. USF finished the night with nine hits, while striking out eleven times. The teams meet again tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. at the USF Baseball stadium.
  23. 4/24/19 Fort Myers, FL - Alec Wisely returned to the mound after an absolute shelling by The Citadel Bulldogs on Sunday. In that contest, Wisely was chased form the mound in the first inning after giving up six runs (five earned) in 2/3 of an inning. Wisely issued four walks and gave up two hits prior to his removal. His last four game stretch has not been good, giving up 22 earned runs in his last 14.2 innings. Wisely went two innings against Florida Gulf Coast, facing eight batters and yielding two hits but giving up no runs or free passes. Wisely exited after two innings. He was relieved by Pat Doudican who went 1 2/3 before yielding to Dylan Burns. Doudican gave up one earned run, but did so at a time the Bulls were up 4-0. He struggle with control walking two and throwing two wild pitches. Burns, on the other hand, looked like ace-like. Unhittable through four innings, Burns was ultimately relived by Nelson Alvarez after issuing consecutive two out walks in the bottom of the eighth. Alvarez threw a wild pitch, allowing the runners to advance to second and third before striking out Marc Coffers to end the FGCU eighth. He would finish it out for the Bulls adding three strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings of work. The Bulls got a run in both the first and second, before adding 2 additional runs in both the 4th and 5th. Kyle Phillips and Alex Bello led the attack with each picking up two hits. Phillips added two RBI; Bello, one. Jake Sullivan managed to acquire four bases on balls. The Bulls (19-20, 2-10) return home for a weekend series against the Houston Cougars (25-16, 8-7).

At the end of a successful season in which the South Florida Bulls achieved the greatest turn around in the NCAA and won the Roman CBI Championship, fans are clamoring for more more Bulls basketball. Excitement is up for next season as is interest for season tickets. In the discussion around the Bulls potential schedule two pieces of information were discussed by board members at The Bulls Pen. First, per @JonRothstein on Twitter, it was found that the Bulls may be participating in the 2019 Cayman Islands Classic (website) : On April 18, the American Athletic Conference release indicated that the SEC/American Alliance match-ups for the 2019-20 season will be officially announced in late May. The schools will then proceed to determine dates for these games, and all four showdowns will be carried on ESPN networks. More USF discussion HERE. Based on last year's schedule announcements we may hear about the Bulls 2019 conference schedule in mid-June. The non-conference schedule was released in mid-July last year. Undoubtedly, in year three of the Brian Gregory rebuild, the Bulls will be seeking to improve the level of non-conference opponents.
