I’m willing to take that chance. What’s the alternative? You can’t keep doing the same thing and expect a different result. In seasons past, I thought it was a dearth of talent. We still have a dearth of talent, but we also have no idea as a coaching staff how to get the ball in the hands of the right guys to close out a game, when to call a timeout to change momentum, etc. That’s where we now find ourselves. We should have been able to close this one out today. We had a shot to close out Memphis and couldn’t handle the press. We were in it late against Temple and get a ridiculous 5-second call on an inbounds play right in front of our own bench. Even today, why is Harris going for a two when we’re down three with 15 seconds left - and it was no ad lib, it was clearly designed that way. We’re trying to get TWO possessions and score TWICE in 15 seconds? Really?

I think that last call where Harris missed the layup was designed to get a quick 2 if it’s open or kick it for the 3. If they made a 2, they would foul and Wichita was missing their free throws at the end me of the game. If they missed one they would go for a quick 2 to tie or 3 for the tie, if they miss both go for the win.

I don't buy the argument that we are USF, we have never won in basketball, so why should we expect results. Its that kind of attitude that leads to failure.

We are one good hire away from being relevant in basketball.

I’m just saying we have to stick it out. Kelly gave him a new contract, maybe he should be fired.

In the past 30 years we’ve only had about 9 winning seasons, so to be real we are not a basketball school.

We’ve had a lot great basketball players come out of Tampa and they don’t give USF the time of day. Until we start winning regularly it will continue to be like that.

I say let Gregory finish the season out, If we aren’t 500% he has to go. Then if we’re going to start from scratch and we can’t get a big name,  hire Chucky Atkins he will give it all he has for the school he played for.

  3. Fire him and then what? We haven’t been a winning program before him. We fired the only coach to take us and win a NCAA tournament game. There isn’t coaches or players  lined up to come here.

unless your hiring a big time coach it will probably be the same crap, some assistant with no head coach experience.

  4. Just a heads up, In the past 30 years we’ve only had about 9 winning seasons. You can’t put it all on the coach. These players have to hit free throws, the coach can’t shoot them for you. It’s not easy to get good players here that’s just the reality of it.I don’t think starting all over is the answer unless we can get some big name coach, which we can’t. Let Gregory play his contract out and see what happens.

we currently have 2 big problems.

Number 1 - Tchewa was the leading scorer tonight but for his height he is softer then a cookie, I don’t ever remember him blocking a shot either.I wish we still had Durr, I saw him playing with UCF against Houston and he was holding his own.

Number 2 - Free throws the reason we keep losing, which in my opinion has nothing to do with the coaches. We know who can hit free throws and who can’t on this team.

  5. Our big man Tchewa sucks, if we had a decent big man we would of won that game. They killed us on the inside and all Tchewa did is foul. Then on the offense of end he got blocked, 3 second calls.

Memphis had a good game plan to try to get the ball out of Harris’s hands specially when dribbling in up the court.

there was a couple steals that were bad reads, harris had 3 guys closing in on him and he threw it to another Memphis player he had people 2 players wide open. The coaches can can’t do nothing about that.

The reason the game was close is because we shot 77% from the free throw line. If we can do that the rest of the season, we will be in games until the end and will probably win a lot of them.

Can we get some hoops talk going? We’re about to step up in competition, but I’m interested to read what those who have been following think of this team so far.

    THINGS I LIKE . . .
Tyler Harris is the best perimeter shooter we’ve had in some time and has some a-hole in him out there on the floor, competitiveness.

Selton Miguel brings instant offense off the bench. He comes in ready to score.

Ryan Conwell is legit. He is in a shooting slump right now, but his stroke is good - unlike what we saw with a guy like Caleb Murphy. He will shake out of that slump. The rest of his game is pretty mature for a guy his age.

Sam Hines does the dirty work and has begun to develop his offensive game. He’s even capable from 3 this year, which wasn’t part of his arsenal last season.

Jamir Chaplin and Keyshawn Bryant hit the offensive glass. Both have crazy hops and are hitting the glass hard.

And what I like most - we’re developing an identity with guys playing their roles and sticking to their strengths, not trying to do too many things they’re not good at.

    THINGS I DON’T LIKE . . .
Captain Obvious - the FT line. At the end of games, if it’s close, it has to be Harris or Conwell at the line for us or we’re cooked.

Corey Walker has a bunch of talent, but he still hasn’t embraced it. He shows signs here and there, but could be so much more.

I know he puts up numbers, but I’m still not sure if I like Russell Tchewa or not. He misses a lot of bunnies and wouldn’t you like to see him just go up and jam some of those shots? Use that awesome size. Play angry and dominate.

That said about Tchewa, when he gets in foul trouble in conference play, we have no post sub. Teams will use that to their advantage against us. We also have no real PG sub. It’s by committee right now and when it’s Miguel handling, the ball sticks. He doesn’t move it. He just looks to go 1-on-1.

Chaplin still isn’t a reliable 3-point shooter. He makes one here and there, but there have been games already where we could have run away and hid if he could have made a wide open three at the right time, but . . . clang. Same at the FT line. Argh!

Just some quick, random musings. I’m interested to read yours.

Russell needs to flush it down.!! When he misses some shots it’s frustrating considering the size he has, just dunk it don’t be scared big guy.

What going on with Keyshawn Bryant?

I’m not sure what was wrong with him but he was out/not dressed for some games. Now he is back and it looks like Gregory has been trying to get him back in to the rotation with out disturbing to much of what they have going on.

  8. I have watched just about every game. They can actually win against good teams if they can shoot a good percentage at the free throw line, that is the major problem right now. Gregory has been putting in the best free throw shooters at the end of games when they are winning which is a good call.Miguel is the go to guy when we need a shot creator, he is very good driving to the hole. Harris shoots the most and at times tries to hard which causes a lot of missed shots, but he is a streaky shooter which is good for us when he catches fire.Russel Tchewa is at his best when he catches it deep deep in the post, if he catches it to far out he misses. Bryant hasn’t played much lately as he’s been out, hopefully he can add on to what’s been going on.

  9. Dion told the whole Colorado team go ahead jump in the portal, lol. That man has some balls and I like that . He knows he can get players.

USF should of offered him 6 million a year what ever else he wanted.

  10. I was talking to a friend of mine that use to be a assistant basketball coach at University of Florida. I asked him his opinion on USF basketball. He said it’s a very hard job and it’s hard to recruit players here. At this point we should of just kept Stan Heath, at least he took us to the tourney.

Might as well just keep Gregory here and see if he can some how go .500 this year and go from there.

  11.

If he is a good recruit he should have been able to keep Egbunu

What makes you believe this?  Do you have some insight as to why Egbunu decided to leave?

    No he doesn't.

Nobody has any idea why any of them have left, except for Josh and Hawkins ...

Part of being a good recruit is being a good salesman. There might of been nothing the new coach could have done to keep him here, I just hope that he went all out to try to keep him. I hope Coach O didn't coming acting like he was all that and a bag of chips becuase he was a assistant at Kentucky. We don't see Kids like John picking to come to USF every year so it's hard to see a guy that will play in the NBA get away from us.

  12. I love how some people are so positive, I mean we can't do anything about what's happening we don't have any control anyways. Keep it real though guys, So far not so good. If he is a good recruit he should have been able to keep Egbunu, which is starting to scare me that he couldn't do. I watched just about ever game last year and Egbunu will be missed on the court, I'm sure his stock went up since he was recruited in high school. He played hard and you could see all that potential. One thing is recruiting at Kentucky another this is recruiting here and winning here. Stan Recruited at Michigan State and won a lot over there but that didn't mean anything here.On that note, I would hate to see another bad see next year it was hard enough watching this year.

  13. I saw this coming, I even mentioned some of this players transferring if Heath got let go. I honestly didn't think Egbunu would leave, I think that is a big loss. He wasn't great on offense, but he played hard and his Defense was something we really needed. If perry is staying, I hope he is hitting the Gym this summer improving on his defense becuase last year he was a fouling machine in foul trouble every other game. At this point we only have 2 big men left and Jordan Omogbehin is not very good, but I think he can be a decent player if some one can condition him and work on his mobility.

  14. http://tbo.com/sports/colleges/usf-bulls/report-masiello-accepts-usf-basketball-job-20140325/

Manhattan College’s Steve Masiello, a high-energy, up-tempo Rick Pitino protege who just guided the Jaspers to an NCAA tournament appearance, has accepted the head coaching job for the University of South Florida men’s basketball team, according to multiple reports.

There was no immediate confirmation today from USF, which fired seventh-year coach Stan Heath following a 12-20 season.

USF retained Eastman & Beaudine, a Texas-based search firm, to identify candidates. According to a document, USF agreed to pay the firm $60,000 to search for men’s basketball candidates.

The same firm conducted USF’s athletic director search, which led to UCLA’s Mark Harlan, whose first day on the job was Monday.

Masiello, 36, was 60-39 in three seasons at Manhattan, including 25-8 this season, which ended with a 71-64 NCAA second-round loss against Louisville in Orlando.

Masiello spent the previous six seasons on Pitino’s staff at Louisville. Previously, he was an assistant at Manhattan and Tulane.

Masiello, a native of White Plains, N.Y., played at Kentucky for Pitino and Tubby Smith. He was a ballboy for the NBA’s New York Knicks when Pitino coached there.

  15. We need a big name coach, that will give us the best chance to succeed the quickest otherwise we will be right where we started or in rebuilding mode in 2 or 3 years. If we hire a guy that was a assistant you don't know what you are getting, just because they were a assistant to a great coach doesn't mean anything. Look at Heath he was a assistant to Tom Izzo and our team didn't play or win like any of his teams.I think right now is do or die time so USF has to go all out.I mean they are wasting alot money firing coaches left and right, what's the problem with actually investing some money in a real COACH?I also think that this is not only a big moment for USF but also the American Conference, they need a team to step up and it could be us.
