Johnny Jones was fired at LSU. No Florida connections but has been all over the South. He had one losing season in the SEC and coached under Dale Brown.

ugh...hire Mike Davis at Texas Southern before you hire Johnny Jones (former Memphis interim coach)

We just need a good coach who desperately wants to live in Florida regardless of the situation and has good recruiting ties. Is that too much to ask for?  :(

sounds like Joe Dooley at FGCU...

problem is NC State, Missouri and LSU are big jobs that may grab up a lot of available talent like Dooley.

  3. UConn AD, AAC Commish, and Big East Commish all deny any contact...

I've been in touch with [UConn president] Susan Herbst and David Benedict throughout and they've been very loyal to the American. This [staying] makes perfect sense for them, because we're a big-time football conference and they need a home for football in addition to basketball, and we're not far away in basketball. We're going to be a good league. Yes, some of the rivalries still have to develop — but they will.

"I'm glad David came out with a statement. I think that was helpful. It doesn't help UConn or the conference when rumors like that start."

The Big East Conference and UConn both said there is “no truth” to the reports that discussions have taken place between the two sides.“There haven’t been any discussions,” Big East spokesman John Paquette told ZAGSBLOG on Wednesday morning.

“There is no truth to the rumors and reports that UConn has had discussions with the Big East Conference for possible membership,” UConn AD David Benedict said. “UConn is having great success as a member of the American Athletic Conference and will continue to do so in the future. This past Monday night was a prime example of that, as our women’s basketball team won its 100th consecutive game before a sold-out Gampel Pavilion and a national television audience. The game was the highest rated college basketball game on ESPN2 this season – men’s or women’s. UConn has won multiple national championships as a member of the American Athletic Conference and has enjoyed postseason success in many sports as a member of the league. We are committed to the long-term success of the American Athletic Conference and believe the conference is committed to being competitive at the highest level.”

We just need to win more with a tradition of winning and then we will fill up a Great Stadium....

    JMHO,

    Ty

so how many G5 teams constantly fill a 66,000 seat NFL stadium? I'll make your search easy...the answer is none.

I mean, yeah, it's a great stadium...a great NFL stadium with red seats and a pirate ship and Buccs logos all over it...

Been to the Liberty Bowl and liked the setup.

UCF will be adding more chairback seats with cupholders this offseason. Stadium will up to near 5K chairback seats near the 50 yard line.

make no mistake, I'm jealous of what you guys have. moreover, you 'struck when the iron (and need) was hot' and built at the right time. 60 million for that stadium is/was a steal.

we simply don't have room on campus, and I guess we're lucky the Liberty Bowl us so close to campus (2 miles)

I was just up there and could not remember ... but I think what that may be is solid plastic benches where Tampa Stadium was aluminum. Both have the same concrete base.

gotcha. When I went to Tampa Stadium I was like 10 :-) so it's been two decades now...Raymond James Stadium is a sight to behind, though.

I love the sight-lines (sharp slope) at the Liberty Bowl but they have been outlawed with the ADA acts. That held up Liberty Bowl renovations for 15 years (it got bad) because the DOJ said the Liberty Bowl was 'grandfathered in'...but if any renovations were made, we had to bring the entire thing up to code (92 million dollar price tag!)...so it sat there. FINALLY, an agreement was worked out between the City and the DOJ, and renovations started.

this ugly, terrible, horrible parking lot...

Does the LB have aluminum benches also?

nope...it's concrete covered in blue plastic. (it might be aluminum under the plastic, not sure)

this is the best image I could find, of course, the seats shown have now been converted to chairback seats. (but that at least shows what they look like)

Guess we're pretty out of touch here in Tennessee, we should know our place and submit to our betters from the University

yep. We let our infrastructure crumble while we deny health coverage to low income Tennesseans, all while the Governor has offered a solid plan through 'Insure Tennessee'.

pretty out of touch IMHO...esp when a majority of Tennesseans want it.

The Tigers don't have their own stadium either. They rent the 1965 (older than the demolished Sombreo) vintage Liberty Bowl from the City of Memphis.  It doesn't hold a candle to the Ray Jay.

Ray Jay would be FAR too large for Memphis (hell, the Liberty Bowl is too big at 58,000)...moreover, it would cost us FAR too much to rent an NFL caliber stadium.

the good part about the Liberty Bowl are.

    1) we're the primary tenant, and we're treated that way.

    2) it's long paid off, so we don't have to worry about ticket surcharges, or high rental rates

    3) it's only 2.1 miles or a 6 min car ride from main campus.

I only visited Tampa Stadium once, but I liked it...I am however glad they went with concrete at the Liberty Bowl over aluminum...it just holds up better, which is why the Liberty Bowl, straight out of 1965, is still very structurally sound.

that said, I'd trade the Liberty Bowl for an actual 45,000 seat on campus stadium like UCFs in a second...I'd learn to love the aluminum...because it's OUR aluminum.

Having been to both venues recently, I'd say the difference in lease payments is about right ...

recently the city has spent 32 million on the Liberty Bowl, but this offseason they did their best improvement yet...for 5 million they more than quadrupled the number of chairback seats.

before (notice the tiny section of chairback seats on both sides)

    the-liberty-bowl-memorial-stadium-52a634

after (it reduced capacity to 58,000)

that was 5 million well spent

Terms of the agreement indicate USF will pay no rental fees, and only direct costs associated with its games. It must collect and pay to the TSA the same ticket surcharge as its prior lease deal: an amount equal to 8 percent of the price of the tickets sold, not to exceed $2.50 per ticket.

Direct costs for use of the lower bowl and two club lounges is estimated to be $172,000 for games with fewer than 24,000 participants, and $185,000 for games with more than 24,000 for the 2017 season. Rates for future years will be determined each July...

that's ridiculously high IMHO, but if that's what USF wants..

this is our lease with the city...(we extended it 'as is')

    http://memphis.granicus.com/MetaViewer.php?view_id=2&clip_id=1394&meta_id=76876

63,000 per game to use the stadium and facilities...city gets parking and concessions, Memphis gets sales of NCAA licensed apparel and ticket sales.

There is no P5 in college basketball ... if there was, Tubby wouldn't be at Memphis.

there is and isn't...the P5 football programs make SO much money off football they can invest heavily in hoops if they choose to.

there are some non-P5 powers in conferences like the BE and AAC...Memphis happens to be one of those teams.

I mean, Texas Tech (you mentioned Tubby) doesn't have much hoops tradition, but they can pay 2 million a year for a basketball coach simply because they're in the Big XII...USF can't do that.

He must have done something right to take Kent State to an Elite 8 and Arkansas to two NCAA tournaments. I guess taking three different schools to the NCAA tournament must have been blind luck since clearly you think he can't coach.

I wasn't a huge CSH fan especially towards the end (oh and that "watching the paint dry" excuse for an offense) but don't ignore the facts.

he didn't get fired from Arkansas and USF because he won too much...

his conference record at Arkansas was 31-49 (.388) and his conference record at USF was 37-89 (.294)...that's why he was fired from both schools.
