  1. if you're going to be at the Liberty Bowl you guys have to check out the Cooper-Young area.

great food, great folks, and it's an easy walk from the Liberty Bowl.

I would also suggest Central BBQ

those are both FAR better options than eating at the tent and it's an easy walk.

and yes...uber in and out...that said, parking isn't that tough (it's like 15 bucks to park)

This whole thread reminds me of another thread about four years ago.

Now all we need is a guy to light up the record book while all the keyboard gurus write about how much he sucks.

OK, so just a point of order.

three years ago some folks said that Orlando and Oliver Antigua was a bad hire for USF hoops.

this (Gregory HC with Bartow as Asst Coach) is not a bad hire at all...

  3. Brian Gregory has 248 wins as a Head Coach with two NCAAs, 4 NITs (1 NIT Championship) and coached in the A10 along with the ACC.

he took an 11 win GTech program to 21 wins with an NIT and they fired him for it.

he also set up Pastner to win ACC COY.

if Gregory and Bartow can't rebuild USF...I don't know who can.

that's the best positive spin I've got.

I'm sure it can be spun to look that way...

the Akron coach did turn you down...so maybe the job was offered around and folks simply said no.

that happened to memphis after Cal...Mike Anderson and Scott Drew turned us down before we settled for Pastner.

I'm not either.  I don't care about the wins/losses.  I think a guy getting ACC Coach of the Year, considering the other programs in the conference, in his first year in the toughest MBB conference in the country, is a pretty big deal.  GT was picked to finish last in conference and they exceeded expectations thoroughly.

I don't know how you can be labeled as "taking a step back" when you exceed expectations.

USF will certainly have low expectations like GTech...here's to 17 wins and AAC COY!

He got ACC coach of the year because of a few flashy wins and because they pretty much automatically disqualify Coach K and Roy Williams from consideration.

He has the worst record for a Coach of the Year winner in about a decade.  Coach K and Roy Williams deserved it a lot more than he did, but they aren't even considered.  That last ACC Coach of the Year to win with such a bad record?  Seth Greenberg.  He won it twice for going 9-7 and 8-8 in conference.

    ^ This.

Brian Gregory took an 11 win team to 21 wins and an NIT...he also set up his successor for ACC COY.

it's not a terrible hire...he's better than Antigua or Bartow.

  7. 2 hours ago, GaUSFBull said:

Yeah, 3 top 25 wins with a new coach, including a top 10 over FSU and a top 5 over UNC, and making the NIT is a step back.

Dammit, I hope USF with Gregory can backpedal towards that outcome.

it's just like Memphis...sure, he can beat a ranked UNC and ranked FSU...but he also lost to Ohio (not Ohio State), Penn State, TN by 23, Duke by over 50, and even NC State.

just like at Memphis he could beat a ranked OSU and Louisville before losing to Tulane, ECU, and South Florida.

the bad Ls cancel out the good Ws.

  8. 2 hours ago, GaUSFBull said:

Say what?  His replacement, Josh Pastner is ACC Coach of the Year this year, his first year at Tech.  GT had a couple of huge Top 25 wins over FSU and UNC.  They didn't make the NCAA tourney but they were close.  They're in the NIT as a #6 seed.

I'd say they took a major step forward.

    going from 21-15 (8-10) to 17-15 (8-10) is a step forward?

Brian Gregory is a better coach than Antigua or Bartow...that should make you guys feel a little better.

I agree that someone like Dooley is probably "as good as it gets" for us .... just don't consider "as good as it gets" as synonymous with "home run hire". A home run hire, to me, would be a lot higher profile, with more success, whose name alone would breathe a little life back into the program. Nobody seriously mentioned up to this point fits that bill.

That's why I said 'Homerun hire for USF'

its all in the eye of the beholder.

Matt McCall, Dooley, even Mark Gottfried...make them turn you down before you move on

  10. 1 hour ago, Triple B said:

Bobby Knight would be a home run hire, if for nothing else, entertainment value. Dooley is just another roll the dice, cross your fingers and toes and hope he has what it takes to get us to the next level candidate like all those being mentioned.

USF could never get Bobby Knight...someone like Dooley is 'as good as it gets' for USF.

remember...Akron's coach just turned you down.

  11. 1 hour ago, Triple B said:

    Is McCall Dancing?

no, his star player from Memphis (Greg Pryor) suffered a season ending injury after Chatt started the season 19-7 and lost out.

that means McCall can be had for a decent price right now.

    2016: 29-6 NCAA Tournament

    2017: 19-12 Declined CIT bid

  12. 1 hour ago, Triple B said:

And so it begins again, if that's true.

I'm almost of the mindset and just going ahead and giving the job to Murray now, if he even still wants it. Let him get started on possibly salvaging players and attempting to put together a list of potential assistants before even more hc vacancies open up as the tourney progresses.

I still say Joe Dooley or Matt McCall are worth offers before saying 'screw it' and hiring Bartow.

I recently saw an interview with Steve Alford, current UCLA Head Coach and a member of the 1987 championship team. He reveres Knight.

BTW, Bobby Knight only had 3 NCAA titles, 76, 81, and 87, Branch McCracken coached Indiana to their other 2 titles in 1940 and 1953.

copy that...I actually just ran my eyes down his wiki page looking for seasons that ended in 'champion' he also had a NIT Championship (1979) and something called a CCAT (WTF?) Championship...that's where I got 5 from.

  14. Bobby Knight won NCAA titles, graduated his players, and those kids would run through brick walls for him.

    is he an a$$hole? sure...

but so are Marine Drill Instructors...and plenty of folks send them their kids.

Bobby has 902 wins and 5 NCAA titles...he may be old and a little senile...but he sure ain't irrelevant.

  15. rumor is you guys are in talks with former GTech coach Brian Gregory

Season Team Overall Conference Standing Postseason
Dayton Flyers (Atlantic 10 Conference) (2003–2011)
    2003–04 Dayton 24–9 12–4 1st (West) NCAA First Round
    2004–05 Dayton 18–11 10–6 T–2nd (West)
    2005–06 Dayton 14–17 6–10 T–11th
    2006–07 Dayton 19–12 8–8 T–7th
    2007–08 Dayton 23–11 8–8 T–7th NIT Quarterfinals
    2008–09 Dayton 27–8 11–5 T–2nd NCAA Second Round
    2009–10 Dayton 25–12 8–8 7th NIT Champions
    2010–11 Dayton 22–14 7–9 T–8th NIT First Round
    Dayton: 172–94 (.647) 70–58 (.547)
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (Atlantic Coast Conference) (2011–2016)
    2011–12 Georgia Tech 11–20 4–12 11th
    2012–13 Georgia Tech 16–15 6–12 9th
    2013–14 Georgia Tech 16–17 6–12 11th
    2014–15 Georgia Tech 12–19 3–15 14th
    2015–16 Georgia Tech 21–15 8–10 T–11th NIT Quarterfinals
    Georgia Tech: 76–86 (.469) 27–61 (.307)
    Total: 248–180 (.579)

I guess the idea is he took an 11 win GTech to 21 wins with an NIT and they fired him for it...Pastner then took the team Gregory rebuilt 17-15 and won ACC COY.

It's better than Antigua or Masiello...but not a slam dunk hire.
