  1. This defense lacks physicality. They're too soft.

I believe it has to do with the offensive system we run. The offense is some version of the spread....not sure even what to call it. So our defense never practices against a smash mouth NFL style offense, like Rutgers, Pitt, Ucon, Miami of years past, etc. In practice they never learn to be physical, instead we rely on our speed, and we don't have enough talent to overcome it. When we play teams like this we always struggle. CJL teams were more physical because they played with passion, albeit some times very undisclipined. This defense plays like its coach, soft and conservative.

Holtz needs to get some coaches in here from the NFL to learn how to be more physical.

  2. I've been reading most of the posts on TBP but haven't posted since that excuse for a game on Thursday night.

What is it with our home record against "real" opponents lately? Does anyone remember when we used to WIN at home? What are we like 1-8 in BE home games under Holtz?

If you think about it, everytime we have a victory, we seem to be on the road. Does anybody have any insight into what might be the reason for this? I can't explain it. It's getting to the point where I'm more confident about this team being able to get a win on the road than at home. Maybe we are no better on the road, but we seem to get more lucky bounces.

Tired of walking out of Ray Jay as a loser game after game, year after year while people sitting next to me are paying half of what I pay for my same seats. Go ahead athletics, raise my seat prices again next year to make up for everyone dumping their tickets.

Let's win a home game this year! What a concept! When's the last time you walked out of RJS totally pumped after a victory (non BCS schools don't count)? Was it the Rutgers game on 11/3/2010?

For me it was the Rutgers game in 2010.

You hit the nail on the head. Our home record against quality opponents is abysmal. On top of that, the games are boring.

If you want to kill a program quickly, this is the way to do it. Boring football with multiple home losses.

  3. i hope holtz was in the NYG locker room

I hope he was redesigning our playbook at his office on campus.

But while watching that game and seeing Schiano's defense torched for 600+ yards, it baffles me how USF doesn't see the opportunities when you blitz a team. I know Holtz isn't Tom Coughlin but there are ways to do it. After 2 years you would have thought he'd figure it out. Next year before we play RU up in New Brunswick, maybe Holtz can give Coughlin a quick call.

The difference is the Giants have Eli Manning and we have BJ Daniels.😥

  4. Teams do take on the personality of their coach.

When coaches coach tight, players play tight and that is what's happening with our Bulls.

When coaches are confident and relaxed, players are confident and relaxed and play that way. Skip is tight, conservative, close to the vest whatever you want to call it and his players take on that persona. He said in the week leading up to Rutgers that it would be low scoring like a baseball game. He also said something about liking 1 point victories. His players pick up on this. His sphincter is so tight it could probably sharpen a pencil. I know it's coach speak, but I'm so tired of listening to his press conferences where he talks about the other teams like they're Packers. It's old.

Leavitt was emotional and undisclipined and his players reacted to it. The emotion carried them to big wins (Auburn, etc) and the undisclipined part cost them games.

    Somewhere lies a happy medium.

Have we gotten a personal foul or late hit penalty this year? I honestly can't remember.

Skip needs to coach with more confidence and lose the conservative tight approach. Let it rip Skip. There's still time.

  5. Very good points. Holtz and staff have shown no ability to correct any of these shortcomings though. They cannot adjust and coach what they have and don't seem to be able to get what they need. Unless undersized linemen from Jesuit is what we need. Probably help the team GPA but as fans I am more interested in wins.

Speaking of Jesuit. I just got back from the Jesuit/Robinson game, which Jesuit lost 31-10. Holtz was there and spent 3 quarters standing under the goal posts watching the game. I believe we had 4 or 5 committs on the field in that game. Bruce Hector from Robinson seemed to be getting in the backfield and causing havoc. Jesuit's Defense was horrible. I don't know if I heard Brad Smith's name called or not. Robinson ran all over them.

  6. As much as people like to think it has an effect; standing, screaming, clapping or whatever never makes a tackle or completes a pass. Some of our biggest wins have been on the road with home crowd at a deafening level.

Maybe we should start screaming when our offense has the ball and they'll think they are on the road. Could translate to more home wins. </sarcasm>

I like it. This could be the new tradition we're looking for.

  7. Pretty simple to me.

    60:00 Team Warmups

    40:00 Advertisements

    30:00 Teams exit the field

25:00 Starting lineups announced on jumbotron

20:00 Herd of Thunder takes field

5:00 Pump up Intro video while HoT marches to form tunnel

4:00 Visiting team take the field

    3:00 USF takes the field

    2:00 Coin Toss

    0:00 Kick-off

-0:36 USF punts after going 3 and out, Fitch is confused, Holtz is proud of the effort

    lold hard

    That's Awesome. Nicely done!

  8. Why sit our best quarterback to give reps to kids who will be backups to Woulard next year?

First off Woolard hasn't even signed. I hope he does, however things change (see Tyler Cameron)

Second, we've seen 4 years of BJ and not a hint of progression. Maybe it's the coaching or maybe it's his skill set.

If I thought we had a chance at the BE with BJ then play him. At this point, it looks like all we'll be playing for is a .500 record and maybe a crappy bowl.

Time to see if Matt or Bobby can do better. The bar has been set real low.

You don't see progression from his sophomore season? That's absurd.

A team like Michigan prays that their qb can play like Bj.

Wins and losses are not solely determined by the qb. Except the Florida game, of course.

    Uh No!

  10. i see 3 or 4 wins more and that's it. team and coaching are no different than last year.

    That's about right.

The question is this. Would you rather finish say 6-6 or 5-7 watching BJ Daniels the 5th year senior making the same mistakes over and over again or would you rather risk finishing 3-9 or 4-8 with Matt and Bobby sharing snaps?

Bring on the future. I've sat through 4 years of this and I know how the movie ends.

  11. Teams like Rutgers run a pro style offense. Big OL, big WRs, big TEs that block and catch and a tough shifty back that you can run 25-30 times a game up the middle. The pound you to death with the running game and then play action pass when you crowd the line. This system teaches you to be more physical because they practice against each other all year. That was very evident last night.

Their QBs are more drop back passers rather than dual threats.

This is the offense the Canes when they won their championships. They suck now because their recruiting has fallen off.

It takes years to recruit the kind of athletes to run this system. It's easier to implement some version of the spread offense because you can get by with less talented O lineman and running QBs that can throw are easier to recruit. This is the route we have taken, and yes we struggle when we play these type of teams.

Why do you think Schiano is the NFL? He ran Rutgers like an NFL team.

  12. I would honestly not call the Nevada win the greatest comeback ever, but an extremely lucky one against a team we should have beaten handily if properly prepared.....

Skip showed again tonight why he was a poor hire and should be fired...Skip Holtz is pathetic!

You're not answering the question. Why couldn't you shut up during the game, but were nowhere to be found afterward until the team lost?

Because the win was a mirage. Tonight validates what we all know. Why crow about something you know is not sustainable??

Welcome to college football. Congrats on watching your first game ever!

    You're an idiot.

Looking forward the weeklong + break when you won't be on the boards, and then assuming we beat Ball State, I won't see your whiny posts at least until FSU.

I will be right there with you when I believe the team is playing WINNING football, not just because they win. You would think that you would have learned after all the years of 4-1 and 5-0 and the fool's gold this team produces.

This was an ugly loss...again...and see no signs that Skip is the guy to turn this around. I will be here to praise when there is something to praise. The Nevada win was fool's gold, or have you been blinded by shinny wins that look good in the win column. Look deeper and you will understand.

    Very true and well said.

I bet Nevada looks back at the end of the year and says how did we lose to those guys! Just like Notre Dame did

    last year.
