Very disappointed in what I’ve seen from Murphy so far. With as high as he was ranked, I expected he’d have more skill. He’s athletic and has a good handle, but that’s it at this point. He’s not much of a defender. His shot is super ugly. They’d have to completely rework his mechanics to fix that. I doubt that happens. He’s one leg/ankle injury away from being totally ineffective because he relies solely on his athleticism. We’ve seen guys like him before - Jimmy Baxter comes to mind, although he actually shot it better than Murphy. Time to start recruiting some guys who can consistently dribble, pass and shoot - high hoops IQ guys - even if they can’t dunk.

He has really struggled since the shut down - shooting 23% from the field (7 of 30), shooting 0% from 3-point range (0 of 5), 6 turnovers, 5 assists and 2 free throw attempts. In that 3 game stretch he has taken more shots that anyone else on the team - not what you want from your point guard, especially from only shooting 22% and doesn't have range.

  2. The offense is just missing a facilitator. We actually rank 6th in ppg in the AAC, but are last in assists and assist-to-turnover ratio. By just being league average in those two areas the offense will begin to click.

Murphy should be that playmaker but he hasn't grown into that roll yet. His performance against UCF was abysmal - his ball handling led to 16 shots (only 4 makes), 0 free throw attempts and only 1 assist. He has an ugly jumper and should be a pass first, shoot second player at this point in his career. He's a freshman, so likely just need to get him into the gym in the offseason and work on mechanics.

If this team can get a facilitator then passing becomes contagious, and we can take advantage of the athleticism that Gregory has assembled.

Totally apples and organges.  TB was basically a QB away.  Our Bulls are MANY players away.

Just want to see a real plan of attack (identity) on both sides of the ball, and better overall talent.  4 -5 wins would be an excellent improvement.

In college football every team is a QB away - that is how big of a difference one can be. QF was a great deodorant and covered up alot holes. Hopefully one of the newcomers can be that dynamic QB to keep us competitive while Scott can plug the other holes.

TB took a 7-9 bucs team to a superbowl win the next year. I know... apples and oranges. That being said, if our O-Line gets it together and one of these QBs steps up we can win some games. No QB for the past few years has been excruciating.  I say 4 wins is a stretch and we will still lose to UCF.

In college football you need a QB. If we have a good one now then 10-2 is possible. If we don't get QB play any better than last year then 4 wins is the ceiling.

At this point in the season its basically too late to make a "move" if you are referring to a Tourney berth.  But still like to see us play better against what at least is conceived to be equal competition.

I'll continue to watch the games till the end.  And hope for better next year.  Meanwhile will root on the girls to win the Conference and make some noise in the Tourney.

You are right. I guess I am holding out hope that they can get hot going into the conference tournament and then catch a little magic. As a prior poster mentioned we were predicted 4th or 5th in conference and those players are still here, so hoping they can get it together in time to make a run.

Blah blah blah the only stat that matters in this world is wins and loses.

In the long run I agree with you, but Gregory has changed the culture of the program since he came on board and that has to count for something. The rust they showed against Houston was understandable, plus they were playing against a Top 10 team. In Gregory's post game press conference he said the team had emptied the tank against them leading to the team to be flat against Tulane.  The UCF loss was not good, especially with how they got any shot they wanted - Durr being out didn't help. I actually thought the team was playing well right before they had to shut it down and clearly they are still feeling them impacts on the layoff.

I know there is plenty to be negative about, but it feels better to try and find the positive and hope this group can find their stride heading into the conference tournament. Hopefully by then we will see the team that was predicted to finish in the Top 4 or 5 of the conference.

I must have blinked.  There may be some athleticism but not seeing this thing called skill.

You aren't looking close enough. USF MBB's is doing alot of things well this year - they are 34th nationally in offensive rebounding, 47th nationally in rebounds per game and 102nd in free throws attempted per game. Yetna and Durr are both tied for 78th in offensive rebounds per game.

Let's at least give him a chance before we start throwing stones.  He hasn't had a chance yet to prove what or what he can't do after one covid year disaster.

You are so hard to please Puc!

Being so negative is what pleases puc. The only way he can get off these days is to watch the Wisconsin beatdown from 2 years ago.

This year is a throw away year and nobody should be held accountable for results during a pandemic, especially when the program had to be shut down. Gregory is building a program with talent and just needs a full, normal off season to get this team to gel. In Gregory's last year at Georgia Tech they were #75 nationally in OER - this guy knows offense!

Lose this game and we are looking at 9/10 place this year.

At least we had a a season.

It makes no sense hiring a retread who happens to be available. Essentially there was no one else to look at so they choose the only person available. Teams having an interim coach happens all the time...especially in this situation when someone leaves early. I am happy they hired this guy though because we will beating their asses very soon.

I don't disagree with you that there may have been other options to consider but hiring a guy for potentially only one year is dumb. It sends the wrong message to the guy you do want to hire.

Ok so we wont lose to SMU that's a good thing, I'll count that as a win. Temple?  UCF was supposed to be a win. Tulane another winnable game. I can't even guess on it anymore. They look disjointed. If they don't kick it in the butt this game and start racking up some wins....????  They come across as a slow, unenthusiastic team exhibiting flashes of skill at times but cant finish a game. 2 mins of mad dash hustle prior to the half and 2 mins prior to the final buzzer doesn't make a winning team.  To bad

This year is a throw away year and nobody should be held accountable for results during a pandemic, especially when the program had to be shut down. Gregory is building a program with talent and just needs a full, normal off season to get this team to gel. He did have some pretty decent offensive teams at Dayton and Georgia Tech - this guy knows offense!
