  1. After futher consideration.....we'll either have a coach on Friday or not until the end of the following week. I hope we are close on someone and pull the trigger fast.  If not we may be down to or 4th or 5th choice. Looks like Anthony Grant had no interest in us once again. For what it's worth.....I'd like to have a Thursday or Friday hire. It gives it a chance to be mentioned several times over the weekend while high school kids are watching the tourney.
  2. Too much movement among the ranks of college basketball right now. We are getting pushed down the ladder as jobs at Michigan, Iowa, etc. open. The big fish will get who they want and candidates are going to hold out on us hoping for a better situation.
  3. I'd like this hire but am certain it's not going to happen.
  4. Don't be mistaken, Anthony Grant was always the #1 choice, even 4 years ago. Hobbs is still my #1 choice now since Grant has ZERO interest in the job.
  5. Curious....the title of the thread says, "Pelphrey Can Speak Now." Was he physically unable to speak previously because of a medical condition? Had he taken a vow of silence?
  6. Agree Bulliever.....it's the nuts. Had he just barred his a$$, mooned the camera, and said goodbye then I think it would be a joke. But grabbing the nuts and speaking in 3rd person certainly makes it serious.
  7. You guys may be setting yourself up for some serious disappointment.
  8. The score of 138 to 134 says a lot about the game....guards jacking 3 after 3. That causes for a lot a long rebounds. Joey Rodriguez is a solid player and a very tough kid but 13 rebounds is an abnormality.
  9. Jones can ask for a release but USF does not have to grant it. I imagine we'll find out more once a new coach is hired. There may or may not be a mutual fit with he and the new coach.
  10. Eric - I thought you were going to be my wheel-barrel driver for when I passed out drunk?
  11. Why couldn't Lutz do more with 4 top 20 classes than make the tourney 5 times over 9 years? In a major conference? CUSA was not a top 5 conference and neither is the A10. I'll pass.
  12. Joe - I agree 100%. Certainly isn't realistic because we don't have the cash. However, if we had the cash....
  13. Depends on who the candidates are. If they aren't in the tourney then it could be less than 2 weeks. If they are in the tourney and advance beyond this weekend then it may be as much as a month. No coach worth hiring is going to ignore tourney preparation in order to entertain a job.
  14. Bulliever - I don't know who could energize our apathetic boosters.  They would find a reason to not attend a game if we had Coach K from Duke. My realistic list was who I thought was the best buy for $500k.  I have no idea what we can or cannot affor to pay but $500k seemed reasonable for a young up and coming coach. I think these guys would work their a$$es off and put a good product on the floor.  Winning gets people to show up.  If we can get back above .500 next year with a new coach I think people show up. I think a new coach, especially a young one, gets 4-5 years just like McCullum gets to prove he can get the ship on track. My personal opinion is we need to scrap together every dime we can find and hire Calapari away from Memphis and lock him up to a 10+ year deal.  He's the total package for a BBall coach......not old, national name, great recruiter and an above average X and O guy who hasn't been caught cheating.  However, I doubt there is any way we can get the more than $1.5 million per year we would need.
  15. I posted this in another thread but thought I'd copy it in for comparison. My realistic list: 1. Karl Hobs - George Washington - Young and has been associated with the Big East before.  He would probably love to battle UConn. 2. Chris Lowery - So Illinios - Young and ready to build a career in a top conference 3. Scott Sutton - Oral Robers - see a trend....another young hard worker 4. Jeff Bzdelik - Air Force - very experiened.  Great X & O's but probably wants to go back to the NBA. 5. Best available coach fired after a first round loss in this year's NCAA's My wish list: 1. Anthony Grant - Wanted him as the #1 choice 4 years ago and that hasn't changed 2. Mark Gottfried after he gets fired from Alabama (may not happen until next year though) 3. Todd Lickliter - Would love to have him on board but he's got it too good at Butler and will be looking much higher than USF. 4. Reggie Theus - Former NBA'er but the buyout will not allow it to happen. 5. Steve Alford after he gets fired from Iowa - A man can dream right.

There are several others that would make me happy like Steve Lavin. There are only a few I wouldn't be excited about, Bobby Lutz and Ralph Willard, come to mind as aging guys who don't have the drive to turn around a program and stick around for 10 years.
  17. An above average coach in average conferences. Nothing exciting about Bobby Lutz. Not a name recruits flock to and not a name that will draw fans.
  18. Selmon was the one who tried to get Grant. I don't think there will be a change but if there is I hope we step up like UNC did in football this year......get a great candidate, make a hire and let him start beating up the recruiting trail.
  19. Sounds like it's a moot point anyway. Per Brett's blog today Kravitz took the job and his wife didn't even have a job in Raleigh at the time and it took her several months to find one. Either false rumors were rampant or someone lied.
  20. Should've said Raleigh....my bad. Sufficient non-stops from Memphis to Raleigh. You are lucky if you can get 1 nonstop from Tampa per day to Raleigh. For a guy who traveled every week for 7 years I can tell you that Tampa isn't that great of an airport as far as direct flights. I'd prefer a direct route versus wasting half of my day changing and missing flights.
  21. Do you just expect him to stay unemployed? Memphis and Charlotte are easy to travel between.
