  1. TCU Wakes Sleeping Giants – Bulls, Hall, Julmiste Power Past Frogs 45-44 in 2OT By Matt Richardson USF opened up the scoring after the Bulls forced TCU’s powerful offense to go three and out on the Frogs first possession of the game. From one yard out, Pat Julmiste leaned on his veteran offensive line to put the Bulls up 7-0. Andre Hall’s 59-yard romp through a shaky TCU defense was the key to this drive. Julmiste also converted a critical 3rd and 8 situation when he connected with SJ Green at the 1-yard line to set up the QB sneak. After a TCU FG made the score 7-3, USF was flagged for an illegal substitution on 4th and 2, giving the Frogs a new set of downs. On the very next play QB Brandon Hassell completed a 36-yard pass to the Bulls 12 yard line. This was followed by a five yard rush and a 7 yard pass to RB Lonta Hobbs for the TD to put TCU up for the first time; 10-7. A USF field goal tied the score at ten. However on the last play of the quarter Pat Julmiste re-aggravated the knee that he injured in the game against Tennessee Tech. Ronnie Banks came into the game and drew a pass interference to set up the field goal. Julmiste eventually returned to the game but his knee was far from 100%. TCU benefited by a questionable, but untimely, pass interference call on Mike Jenkins. Replays show the pass, if caught, would have been out-of-bounds. However, after some discussion, the penalty stood and two plays later Lonta Hobbs went in from two yards out for his second score of the night to put TCU up 17-10 at the half. USF shut down TCU’s offense on the Frogs first possession of the third quarter, once again forcing the Frogs to go three and out. After a couple of questionable calls on the ensuing Bull possession, and facing 3rd and 18, Pat Julmiste connected with Joe Bain for a first down and a 28 yard pickup. Later in the drive, again on a third and long, Julmiste connected with S.J. Green for a 23-yard completion. On the following play, Andre Hall took the ball in from eight yards out to tie the game at 17 apiece. After each team punted, Pat Julmiste got hit on his blindside. Julmiste fumbled and the Frogs recovered at the Bulls 5-yard line. The very next play, Robert Merrill took the ball in from five yards to put the Frogs back ahead 24-17. The Bulls dodged another bullet which seemingly would have put the final nail in the coffin when, on one succession of plays, they were flagged for three personal fouls (once on 4th and 28) giving the TCU offense a new set of downs on each occasion. However all was for naught when, after finally stopping the TCU offense on third down without a penalty, Bruce Gipson sliced through the line to block the field goal attempt with 6:42 left on the game clock. On the ensuing drive, Julmiste hooked up with Hall for a 30-yard reception to put the Bulls at the TCU 38. With 3:58 left on the clock and with a 4th and six, Julmiste hit a wide-open Hall for a 17-yard touchdown, tying the score at 24. With 2:51 left in the game TCU answered with a 46 yard screen pass to Lonta Hobbs to take the lead back 31-24. Not to be outdone, the Bulls came storming back with a 19 yard completion to S.J. Green and a huge 53 yard pass to Joe Bain to set up a three yard Clenton Crossley TD run that knotted the score at 31 - sending the game into OT. In the first OT, Donta Hobbs picked up his 4th rushing TD of the night. But the Bulls responded with Andre Hall’s 2nd rushing TD of the night to keep the score tied at 38 as the first OT period came to a close. In the second OT, Julmiste found an open S.J. Green on 3rd and 10 to set up Andre Hall’s 3rd rushing TD off the night to put the Bulls up 45-38. TCU responded on a fourth and one with Brandon Hassell rushing 16 yards for the TD. However the game finally ended with a Bulls victory as the snap on TCU's  extra point attempt was low and mishandled - the kick never got off the ground and TCU found themselves out of time and out of chances.  The Bulls offense exploded with Pat Julmiste at the helm. Even with a bum knee, the previously anemic passing attack exploded for 324 yards. Andre Hall had a huge day, picking up 119 yards and three touchdowns on 28 attempts on the ground. The young back also had 65 yards and 1 touchdown on four catches. Receivers Joe Bain and S.J. Green constantly came up big picking up 110 and 98 yards respectively.  The Bulls dominated in time of possession 35:53 to 24:07 and converted 13 of 21 third downs while TCU only converted 1 of 12. The Bull defense shut down the TCU passing game allowing only 157 net yards passing. Story Link

  3. Posted on Sat, Sep. 25, 2004 GAMEDAY TCU vs. South Florida By Damien Pierce Star-Telegram Staff Writer Where: Amon G. Carter Stadium TV: None Radio: ESPN/103.3 FM, KTCU/88.7 FM Line: TCU by 10 Series: TCU leads 1-0 Last game: TCU won 13-10 last season The big Seven-O continues to haunt TCU's defense For the first time in the coach Gary Patterson era, the Horned Frogs are trying to recover from an embarrassing loss. The Horned Frogs were humiliated in Lubbock on Saturday to the tune of 70-35, and plenty of TCU fans are still wondering if the sky is falling. Conference USA play arrives just in time to pick up the spirit of the TCU faithful. South Florida is no slouch, but the Horned Frogs are 17-6 in league play since 2001 and have been thinking about a conference championship since watching last season's title disappear at Southern Miss. If that's not enough, it's safe to say the Frogs need this one badly after last week's subpar performance. THE EDGE QUARTERBACK From the start of the season, the Horned Frogs figured they would need Brandon Hassell at some point this season. That point just arrived earlier than anticipated. Tye Gunn is out with a sprained right ankle. While several schools might fret playing the backup quarterback, the Frogs aren't hurting. Hassell is 7-2 as a starter. South Florida would love to have him. The Bulls are still trying to get consistency out of either Pat Julmiste or Ronnie Banks. Key stat: The Bulls are averaging 102 passing yards per game. EDGE: TCU RUNNING BACKS Lost in the Lubbock debacle was a pretty good run by Lonta Hobbs, who took an option pitch and raced down the right sideline for a 61-yard touchdown run. The run was the second longest of his career. South Florida's Clenton Crossley has been solid, but not spectacular. Key Stat: Hobbs' 117.3 rushing yards per game ranks 15th in the nation. EDGE: TCU WIDE RECEIVERS After several dropped passes in Lubbock, the last thing the TCU receiving corps needed was to lose wide receiver Reggie Harrell, the team's leading receiver. He's out because of a broken finger. South Florida's quarterbacks have barely found their receivers this season. Key stat: No South Florida wideout has more than four catches. EDGE: TCU OFFENSIVE LINEMEN Tackle to tackle the TCU line looks pretty sturdy, but it had problems against Texas Tech. The Red Raiders were physical, and on more than a few occasions Tech defensive end Adell Duckett ran loose to the quarterback. The group won't face that kind of talent this week, but the line needs to improve. South Florida's line is fairly experienced, but the offense has been miserable. Key stat: Despite Saturday's setback, the Frogs are still averaging 467.7 yards per game. EDGE: TCU DEFENSIVE LINEMEN In last season's game against South Florida, the Horned Frogs had 10 sacks. The bad news? The players who made those sacks are gone and this group is searching for consistency. South Florida's Lee Roy Selmon Jr. will have the attention of TCU's offensive line. He has 1/2 of a sack this season. Key stat: 70. (Refer to last week's scoreboard) EDGE: South Florida LINEBACKERS South Florida sophomore Stephen Nicholas is on the Butkus Award Watch list and earned freshman All-America honors last season. He's a member of a fast group on a defense that thrives on linebackers making plays. TCU's David Hawthorne, in the meantime, has secured his role along side Martin Patterson, but he's still learning the defense. Offenses are quizzing him every week. Key stat: 70. (Review that score yet?) EDGE: South Florida DEFENSIVE BACKS Gary Patterson has stated his team's pass coverage is probably better than people think, but it's hard to overlook that the Frogs are giving up an average of 382.7 passing yards per game. The Frogs will juggle the lineup this week with Elvis Gallegos, Marvin Godbolt and Jeremy Modkins starting the safety positions. South Florida's secondary has one interception but gave up three long touchdown passes against South Carolina. Key stat: 70. (Any questions?) EDGE: South Florida SPECIAL TEAMS The Horned Frogs have put a "Help Wanted" sign on their punting position. John Braziel's 40.3 yards per punt average might not look horrific, but most of those punts stayed in the air for only two seconds. Not good. South Florida's Andre Hall is a dangerous kickoff returner and kicker Santiago Gramatica is the third and youngest of the Gramatica kicking family. Key stat: Gramatica has only made one of three field-goal attempts, but his misses are from 43 and 58 yards. EDGE: South Florida Story Link They've been haunted this week by the 70 points and we've been haunted by the SC game and last year's 10 sacks..
  4. Stay focused and positive... I think we'll see good things today.
  5. I am thinking of incorporating a new gallery/album/slideshow program at the site and have fooled around with it a little while and would like to put it out there for you all to mess with...some of it is customizable, some is not. Let me know what you think of this... Thanks! Brad New Image Gallery
  6. Hey guys, don't forget to grab that sandwich and a cold one, drag your PC into the living room and join the rest of the Bulls in the chat room. See you there.
  7. This notice is in case you didn't notice the three new links above - Roster, Schedule and Depth Chart. I think the schedule link can come in handy - it's an expanded schedule as I have done in the past. Pull it up and you have the typical date/time, and TV, but you also have direct links to each opponent's official site and the local newspaper. It's a easy way to get opponent info quickly.
  8. 1. When was this site started? Late 90s 2. Why was it started? To get a Bulls presence on the 'net, stir up some interest 3. What was the goal? To provide a place where current Bulls could meet and new Bulls could take interest. 4. Who started it? I did 5. Who maintains it? In the last couple years, many have joined the team to help in different ways from moderating boards to offering technical expertise to general advice and site content. We could deparately use a marketing division...
  9. 1. What is your favorite sports movie? Caddyshack edges out Brian's Song 2. If you could add one present college football player    to the USF roster, who would it be? A top QB, not one in particular, maybe Syvelle Newton (). 3. What is the best road trip you have ever been on (does not have to be sports related)? College road trip to Daytona Beach...funny now, many years later.  4. What & where was the best concert you've ever    seen?   Eagles/Buffet in Tampa Stadium 5. Should I continue to do 5 question Friday? Yes, until someone comes out with "4 question Thursday" - then it might be too much... ÂÂ
  10. Bulls O-line has sacks on its mind In 2003, it gave up 10 sacks to TCU; in eight games since, just 14. By GREG AUMAN, Times Staff Writer Published September 24, 2004 TAMPA - For USF's offensive line, it was a glaring number, one the Bulls never had come close to before and haven't gone near since. Ten sacks. Texas Christian took down USF quarterbacks 10 times in last year's 13-10 win, which in turn took down the Bulls' 21-game home winning streak. The record for sacks allowed was six, and no team has managed more than four since then. It's a game the Bulls' offensive line would rather forget. All five starting linemen, including four-year starters Alex Herron and Derrick Sarosi, offensive co-captains and two of USF's most outspoken players, declined media requests to be interviewed this week. "TCU really destroyed us last year, to say the least," coach Jim Leavitt said. "We didn't do too much of anything right offensively last year against them. They're very good and certainly we struggled quite a bit. ... You don't want to give up 10 sacks often. That's a lot of sacks. It's a tough one to go through." The game is now as remarkable for the way USF's offensive line has played since. The Bulls have allowed a total of 14 sacks in the eight games since. "I'd like to say they kept battling and responded obviously to a bad day," offensive line coach Greg Frey said. "Hopefully we can continue to keep working on that." The linemen may not be talking this week, but their words in the wake of their Oct. 10 performance show the frustration and demoralization of their first home loss. Asked if he thought any defense could do what TCU did, Herron said: "Never in my life. One-hundred-twenty-six yards? That's unbelievable. ... It feels terrible. That's the only way to describe it." USF's entire line returns from that game, and the current alignment - Sarosi at left tackle, junior Frank Davis at left guard, Herron at center, junior Chris Carothers at right guard and senior Levi Newton at right tackle - is one the Bulls shifted to during the TCU game. The continuity of their experience, with a combined 122 starts, was thought to be a team strength entering the season, and that hasn't changed. They have been a relative bright spot in a disappointing 1-1 start, allowing one sack in each game and keeping pressure off quarterbacks Pat Julmiste and Ronnie Banks. Continuing that success is a key to giving the Bulls a chance to win their Conference USA opener, and an opportunity for the line to show how far it has come in the past year. "These kids take a lot of pride in what they do," Frey said. "TCU was an excellent defense, had a couple of draft picks off the front line, and to be honest, this year they're as good. We're looking forward to playing them." In truth, the Horned Frogs are a decent leap from the defenses that led the nation in 2000 and 2002, or even the squad that came into Tampa ranked 15th and leading C-USA last year. All four starters from last year's defensive line are gone, taking 100 career starts with them, and three of the four replacements hadn't started a game before this season. TCU's relentless rush last year was more than four down linemen, however. The Horned Frogs run a 4-2-5 defense, confusing offenses with a barrage of stunts and blitzes. Martin Patterson, TCU's strongside linebacker, had 1.5 sacks against USF, and strong safety Flander Malone had one. As a result, pass protection must also rely on backs and tight ends picking up blitzing defenders. "It wasn't just a four-man rush. We threw in a lot of blitzes and we just got fortunate," coach Gary Patterson said. "I don't think they'd seen anything like that, and I'm sure they'll be prepared for it this time." The TCU defense came into USF hot last year, having allowed 27 points in its previous four games. This week is the opposite, as TCU was lit up for 70 points in a loss to Texas Tech last weekend, a game in which TCU led 21-0 before its defense gave up touchdowns on eight of nine possessions. The Horned Frogs enter Saturday's game ranked 103rd in total defense out of 117 Division I-A schools, but the Bulls don't need to be reminded of what TCU is capable of doing. "You can obviously see how good they've been in the past, and it seems that they're not missing any steps this year either," Frey said. "Our effort has been good, the fundamentals have been up and down. We're still making some mistakes that we hopefully will get corrected. They're trying hard, and this means a lot to them." 18. From the official USF Site: Football Aims to Rebound in C-USA Opener at TCU If USF is looking for its silver lining in a 34-3 loss at South Carolina last Saturday, it is this. In each of the past four seasons, USF has rebounded remarkably from what has been one annual lopsided loss. In 2003, USF lost 40-17 at Alabama to open the season, but went on to win each of its next three games. The Bulls closed out on a 7-3 run after the Alabama loss. In 2002, the Bulls fell 42-3 at Arkansas, and after a loss at Oklahoma the following week, USF went 7-0 to close out the season. In 2001, Utah dropped USF by a 52-21 margin in Salt Lake City, but the Bulls went 6-0 the rest of the way. In 2000, USF lost 41-7 at Southern Miss and then closed the season with a 4-1 stretch. In those four seasons, USF was a combined 11-1 in the three games that followed the lopsided loss. The only defeat in those 12 games was at Oklahoma. When taking into account the remainder of each of the four seasons after the big loss, USF was a combined 24-5. If the Bulls are to rebound again this year, it will come against some of the finest competition Conference USA can offer, beginning with back-to-back games at TCU and back home against Southern Miss, who finished second and first respectively in the league last season. USF is at TCU Saturday, September 25. The game kicks off at 7 p.m. EST and can be seen in the Tampa Bay market on ABC 28. The game will also be aired on WTBN 570 & 910.
  19. jfcohio, First thanks for your interest in helping this board grow.  Any word we can get out to other Bulls will help in that regard. By the way, over the last five years I have advertised online at the Oracle and in print three times.  I also advertised in the USF Magazine that goes to alumni. I would love to build a stronger participation on campus.  We have some student posters here that have been on board for a few years and they are a pleasure.  Likewise, we have a couple posters from the admin and faculty that have provided keen insights.  You are correct however, the membership of this board could easily be 5 times what it is today.  I am open to any ideas.  And again, thank you for your participation and your support in growing our Bulls online community.
