The problem with the tired argument of CJL is the context of looking at his time here. There is no question when looking at where we started and where he took us, that his time here was an unprecedented success ......... even though that didn't guarantee that same type success going forward that some like to extrapolate out

I'm glad we can agree on something

Yeah but he will never ever get that opportunity so why waste your breath? Wishing it so will not matter…he is NEVER EVER NEVER EVER COMING BACK…move on.

If I were asked to bet on which is more likely,  A) Leavitt comes back at some capacity, or B) we have a winning season next year, I think I'd bet on A

I believe it's just being tired of the same argument, "we suck only because we fired CJL."

Trust me, I wish this wasn't reality, but it is. We should learn the lesson of knowing what is good when we have good. We got too greedy. We would do well to learn the lessons of the past.

I LOVED what CWT was able to do with this team. His recruiting was insane, the gulf coast offense was legendary, and the confidence the team had was untouchable.  BUT he pulled the trigger too quick. Can't fault someone for chasing their dreams,  it sucked,  but I'd take him back in a heart beat.

Well said. I'd fire CJS today if we could get CWT back. Same as I would Leavitt.

I will always appreciate CJL and he will always have a special place in this program and in our memories. But to think for a second he could recruit in this environment, have the same relationship with the media that he did,  or simply out work these young hungry coaches in the conference is a little much.

Pure speculation. He has always been a great coach and you have no idea what coach would do if we gave him his rightful opportunity again.

  4. By the way, I feel to a much lesser extent an attachment to CWT as well. I'm pretty sure I would've taken him over CJS when that decision was going on. I didn't know it was controversial to like former coaches who did good things at USF...

Is someone going to act like CWT was a horrible coach too because he didn't win a championship? It was happening, he just needed more time, like CJL. Obviously Willie didn't put in the time here like Jim, but Willie should always be welcome here. It's weird that half this 'fan' base is allergic to praising our greats....

he coached in non-BCS conferences too, Brad. he didnt win much of anything there either.

but we know u think the program is in disarray because of the fans on your message board so we have the miserable aaand… the miserable. at least u have a place to not only vent, but attack those very fans.

if the horrible fans on this board hold so much power, imagine if this place was used to actually do something productive for the program instead of just fester in decades-old bitterness over CJL.

the biggest thing this program can do to improve itself is exorcise that demon but it’s clear so many in our fanbase don’t want to let it go.

it’ll take a generation, or another undeserved hand-up to a Big Boys conference based on our recruiting location & media market rather than our on-field exceptionalism, to move past the imaginary CJL curse that’s really just bitter blood & spite from older fans that refuse to move on.

These CJL hater takes are just bad. You can call it bitter or whatever, the fact is that people who expected more than what he gave are d.e.l.u.s.i.o.n.a.l.

And move on to what? The university isn't even competitive. If we had even a 6-6 record, CJL probably wouldn't be brought up. But since this university can't get anything going, it is important to remind the CJL haters that you were flat out wrong, objectively. That he was doing something special.

I'm really amazed that after seeing what happened with the program that it's even a debate if CJL did well, that's MY issue.

in CJS I trust right now... We are a much better team than our record says... 2022, if we don't make a bowl game, then it will be time to hit the eject button... There is just way too much here not to win 6 games next year...

Interesting. I do not trust CJS right now. I said before the UCF game, if we got blown out, we needed to fire him. We were 7 yards away from a win. While I can tolerate keeping him, (though if I am athletic director I hire Jim of course) expecting him to get 6 wins next year doesn't even seem realistic. 5 seems a much more manageable goal. I know the difference between 5 and 6 is minimal, but this is a minimal team. I definitely don't see "too much" here as you put it.

So, I may as well throw in my two cents, everyone else is. You know what the main difference between USF Football and almost all the other sports in our department? Lack of continuity at the HC position, which seems to me, is directly related to success.

    Jose Fernandez - 20 years - His first three seasons - 25-57
    Denise Schulte-Brown - 16 year - Her first two seasons - 14-20-4
Ken Eriksen has retired obvs. but he coached that softball team for 22 years
Billy Mohl is coming up on his 8th season with the baseball team, 5th as HC

All of the above have had success in their programs because there was stability. Stability breeds success not the other way around.

Scott, 2 whole seasons in and you guys want him fired. It's BS, I don't care who you bring in to coach, when you are starting from zero, in football, there is low probability you are going to have success in 2 years, especially when there was nothing there to start with. McClain is a effin Freshman and he is no *enter Heisman QB name here* but he has a **** ton of potential, for God's sake, give him some continuity and maybe he will be our next Matt Grothe. I say, not only keep Scott, give him a contract extension, show the team that the the administration is stabilizing the situation. IMO, I think a stable strong athletics department grounded in a foundation of a strong football program is as important to a "P5" conference (which, if it wasn't for the $ I'd say we stay where we are at, eff the P5) as an OCS.
That Tulane game was bad, real bad, but if you take that out of the picture and look at the season as a whole, unless of course you've jumped ship and haven't really watched the games which seems to be sort of a common thread on this "fan" board, this team is better, and getting better each week (mostly). I expect to see a huge bounce back tomorrow and sure, we might still lose but there is something jelling here and I hope Scott is given the chance to finalize the product.

Probably more like 4 cents but whatevs.

I agree with continuity. That's why I hate people who called for Leavitt's head. I was fine with 7-8 wins a year because he brought passion and every game felt winnable.

Obviously we can't change the past, and here we are with Jeff Scott with a terrible team at the end of his second year. We have maybe 4 FBS caliber players with Weaver, Battie, and a couple LBs. We have a young freshman QB with potential, but is still the worst or near worst QB in the AAC at the moment.

My question is why is that the best we have at the end of his year 2? Why does 1-9 Tulane make us look FCS? Where is the talent? Where is the recruiting? Transfers please? We have no secondary players from FLORIDA??

I get it, you want to be hopeful. Me too. This guy is probably not it.  I say check out this UCF game. If USF is even competitive, you can convince me it's a good move to keep him. If we get blown out by over 15-20 again, I don't think we can afford to keep him.

  8. My 2 cents on the McClain or Fortin discussion.... McClain has more potential, and that is probably why many would prefer him to start. He runs better, can throw further, all the tools of a good QB. Fortin has had a rough go of it since coming to USF. He keeps getting hurt. When he does get his chance, he is in over his head. However, if the game went on for a 5th and 6th quarter, I would 100% feel better about playing Fortin the rest of the way given how bad Timmy looked. Timmy seemed careless with his throws, as if the main priority of a QB is to juke out a Dlineman. There seemed to be no focus of what might happen pre play. I have no idea if Fortin might be anything, but I am not sure how the panic button hasn't been pressed on this QB situation. Which means we try out all our options.

The only credit I give to coach Scott yesterday was giving Fortin a shot. All this being said, I would still likely start McClain vs UCF. We need his upside to win most likely. But I'd give a slightly shorter leash than your average starter.

I wish lack of passion was the reason. I think we simply aren't talented enough to overlook an opponent. I appreciate coach Levitt, but I really believe some of you all long for him like people long for their first love.

It was sweet because it was new, it wasn't meant to be though. He wasn't the only coach for us, those weren't the last of our good days, it was perfect for what it was. The college landscape has changed so much since then. We,  have changed so much since then.

We'll always have the memories though, isn't that enough???

Our young team is learning some valuable lessons. They hurt, just as much as our first heartbreak, but they make us better in the long run. I bet we won't look over another team again.

I'll bet you're on the side of keeping CJS too

  10. I think you mean we need CJL back. If that is what you are saying, I am ready to buy season tickets until the day I die. This university seems to care more about being lame than winning. He slapped a player?? THEY HIT EACH OTHER ALL DAY. Wake up and get some spunk back. This isn't a soft city, and we don't deserve this SOFT program. I just want passion. BRING BACK JIM.

yeah, he’s not the answer pal

The play calling for his set was pretty bad too. I would have liked to seem them spread it out and let him make a read throw.

You act like McClain has done ANYTHING this game, why would you insist on keeping him out there? What has he done at all today that is positive? Nothing. He has missed basically every throw, correct?
