  1. We have beaten FAMU, Syracuse, UCONN, and SMU. A little early on the "real" talk, but this team is once again better than the year before. We will see just how for real we are with the rest of the games on our schedule. I am waiting for a good defense to come at us with a good game plan that basically dares Taggart to throw the football every down because they refuse to get beaten by the run game.

  2. You can't read. I said starts not games. Grothe came in on relief duty of Pat Julmiste in his first appearance. Even if you include that first game instead of the atrocious 7th start Matt had (versus Cincy) they are VERY SIMILAR. Competition is pretty even as well, arguably Flowers has had a tougher schedule to this point in their careers. Like another poster said Grothe thrived on bubble screens and made his share of dumb mistakes (his pick versus FIU almost lost us that game).

Update your numbers after the next game (when Matt's stinker vs. Cincy would be included) and we are right back to my #'s, unless Flowers gets hurt.

All numbers I cite are from sports-reference.com game logs.

Stand by my statement if Flowers is white the sub-conscious would favor supporting him instead of trashing him.

EDIT: In his rookie year Grothe had no RB's, but I would take the WR core from back then any day of the week. The overrated Amp Hill would be our best receiver today and he finished like 6th on the team in receptions

Oh so we're not going to include Matt's game vs McNeese State and instead Cincy, but are going to count Flowers against FAMU. Seems fair to me...

  3. Not race baiting. Its human nature. I would understand it in the NFL. Black QB's dont win championships in the NFL. In College its a different story. I am a 27 year old White Republican by the way. Just calling it like I see it.

You're the only one that has even had that come to their mind so it may be your nature. Speak for yourself not everyone on the board.

  4. I Will say even with your corrected stats Matt isn't in a different league. Flowers is in the ball park.

Not necessarily saying he's in a different league, but you've gotta look at the right numbers in order to even have the conversation...

Flower's completion % is helped tremendously by the jet sweep play we run 3,4, 5+ times a game. Doesn't take long for INTs to add up either. Flowers is till 40 or so attempts fewer than Matt was through 7 games.

My point was not to talk badly about Flowers or point out he's not good. I like Flowers A LOT and think he's done a fantastic job since Taggart has allowed him to play, but Grothe was clearly the better QB through his first 7 games.

  5. Loved the pressure Tom Allen brought over and over. If Shirreffs had that kind of success running it I can't imagine what a Greg Ward, or PJ Walker would/will do to us on the ground. Hopefully it was just something that wasn't planned for at all and caught the D/Allen totally off guard.

  6. I think some of you are suffering from a deep seeded racism when it comes to this topic. Over the first 7 starts QF compares very favorably too the best QB in USF history:

     GrotheFlowers
    Completions10683
    Attempts173137
    %61.3%60.6%
    Yards12641157
    Yards per Attempt7.318.45
    TD810
    INT88

    Rushing Yards424468
    TD64

    Record4-3

3-3 *  no decision in SMU game, team won

First of all, the racism statement is complete nonsense. Second, where in the world are you getting your numbers from??

    1. Grothe had 9 passing TDs through his first 7 games and 7 INTs not 8 and 8. He also added 7 rushing TDs during his first 7 games. So he had 16 total TDs vs 7 INTs.
    2. How many of those 137 attempts are the jet sweep which is 100% completion percentage for Flowers? 25? 30? Say he actually throws the ball downfield on those and his completion percentage which is worse than Grothe's in the chart above ends up being even lower.
    3. Flowers has 14 total TDs (10 passing) vs 6 INTs (wrong number in the chart again).
    4. Grothe had 1,388 yards passing through 7 games in 165 attempts. Comes out to a 8.41 yards per attempt. He also completed 104 of his first 165 pass attempts. Comes out to a 63% for completions.
    5. Grothe's record through his first 7 games was 5-2.
    6. Flowers has completed 83/137 for 1,046 yards which comes out to be a 7.635 yards per attempt.

So here is the REAL break down.

    Completion %: Grothe 104 completed, 165 attempted pases = 63%

                          Flowers 83 completed, 137 attempted passes = 60.5%

    Pass Yards:    Grothe 1,388 yards

                          Flowers 1,046 yards

    Yards/Att.:      Grothe 8.41

                          Flowers 7.635

    Record:          Grothe 5-2

Flowers 3-3* Let's be honest, would be 3-4 had Taggart ran him out there for the final possession of the SMU game.

Good try though. I really like what I've seen out of Flowers. Every game Taggart seems to trust him more and Flowers has rewarded him by playing really well. You obviously got way ahead of yourself above, or purposely fudged numbers.

  7. Same can be said about USF about having a good run between 2006 - 2010 with a 42-23 record.

We were beating legitimate teams and going 8-5, 9-4 playing P5 teams every week.

UCF had a season where they didn't beat a single team with a winning record and finished 10-2 or 9-3 or something like that. They had another season where they went 10-2 and only two of their wins came from teams with winning records - Ball state at like 7-5 and ECU 8-5.

I'm not saying people didn't get over excited about us, but at least we could hang with some of the big dogs. UCF beat up on the deaf and blind and we talked about like they were going to be the next greatest college football team in America.

  8. UCF struck lightning in a bottle with Blake Bortles. Never should've had Storm Johnson he should've been at Miami or Georgia. They lost 5 really, really good WRs. Pretty sure they also lost 7+ defensive starters the last 2 seasons. They were in trouble from the get go this season just looking at that.

Over the last few years they got so lucky with some of their wins. They barely squeaked out wins against Memphis (3-9) and Temple (2-10) the year they went to the BCS game (2013). Last year beating ECU on a last second hail mary where the ECU defender jumped at the 5 yard line and Perriman caught the ball in the endzone... They beat Houston because Greg Ward Jr fumbled at the 1 yard line with 20 seconds left in the game. TD would've put Houston up 19 -17. The football gods are evening it out now.

Blake Bortles absolutely made that team.

  9. He is only suspended from team activities right now, he's not kicked off the team.  We know Taggart will likely allow him to earn his way back on to the team.  He's done that with a few guys.  I hope the kid learns from this and doesn't make more stupid decisions like this.  That being said, I'm thinking this will likely move Gibbons up to #2 Tackle behind Amachia..

This will be WAY over Taggart's head. It won't be his decision.

  10. like Taggart said we don't have the type of offense that is going to throw 80 times per game. Flowers has 85 attempts this year. that's over20 per game. he averages 13+ carries per game. those are ideal splits for our offense although game situations probably dictated more passing especially against maryland. I'd like to see us run outside the tackles more.

he has 44 pass attempts in the first half and 41 in the 2nd half so not sure why you think he only throws in 4th quarter when we are down.

How many of those pass attempts in the first half are the jet sweep where Adams comes across the field pre-snap, Flowers hikes the ball and tosses it to him like a hand off? 10? 15?

You're not watching if you think we throw the ball enough throughout the first 3 quarters of our football games. I've never said we need to be a 50/50 run to pass team or need to throw it all the time. We have to throw the football more when the defense is not expecting it. Not only to try and have a little bit of balance and make the defense think about respecting the pass, but to open up the running game more. If you watch these games we play the defenses make adjustments and saying they stack the box is an understatement. They usually have 9-10 players within 7 yards of the LOS. That's ridiculous. If Taggart or you think we are going to have any kind of offensive success running the football in that situation you're nuts.

  11. Well, your memory is for the most part semi-correct; however, a trip down memory lane is needed to put my/our observations into proper perspective.

First off, all of us were definitely on-board and excited about Daniels when he really emerged in 2009. As you recall, Daniels enjoyed a fairly good "second" freshman year while throwing for nearly 2.000 yds and rushed for nearly 800 yds while leading Bulls to a 8-5 record. However, some of his down sides began to emerge in his sophomore year when his TDs passes per game dropped, and he had more INTs than TD passes and his rushing yardage dropped by about 500 yds.  Although, while the Bulls went 8-5 in 2010, I believe it was the majority opinion that USF appeared to be stalled at 8-wins, and the feeling was that it was either Leavitt and/or Daniels that had peaked.  Granted, we would kill for that 8-wins now, but back then, USF's football program was on the rise, and expectations were much higher than they are now.

As his career progressed from there, wins started to decline and you'll recall that USF went 5-7 in 2011 and then went to 3-9 in 2012.  So, yes, some of us started to question the decisions to stay put with the status quo. However, that assessment was not our initial observation on Daniels, but came about when Daniels was having his pedestrian sophomore year followed by two losing seasons when everyone believed a higher bar was very reachable for USF's football program.

Lastly, some of our blog posts were also done as blog shtick just to get a rise out of the now deceased Steve O'Neal - who was, btw, a friend of mine, and someone that I'd tailgate with and sit with to watch USF home games.  We had those long-running blog battles mainly for blog shtick just to add some spice to that blog.  Yes, we disagreed on several things - well, make that, many things, but we engaged in our blog battles primarily for entertainment purposes.  Oh yeah, and a few of us purposely disparaged Daniels' play just to irritate BradentonBull because BradBull was such a huge Daniels fan and generally sided with O'Neal on the blog. I'm sure that BradentonBull thought we were a bunch of jerks, but much of what we did was again, blog shtick just to mess with people.

I no longer do that stuff, as people take these blog debates personally.  So, I no longer purposely try to stir the pot - but obviously, I still have that ability when I'm not even trying.

We saw what happened when Daniels left or went down with injury. When he played we had no problem scoring. We just couldn't stop anyone. I wasn't on the boards then, but anyone that was calling for him to be benched must've been lost.

  12. I am watching the SMU-Houston game. Both teams feature dynamic running QBs.  They both seem pretty dynamic and to be true playmakers.

I have been impressed with Flowers' escapability when he does drop back, but have not been impressed with his playmaking or running ability.

Is it our offense or is he really not a great playmaker or am I missing something?

I was thinking the same thing.  Flowers has done well with erratic snaps (hopefully that skill is less needed as the year wears on), and he's been elusive in avoiding sacks.  But as much has been made of QF as being more of a runner (true), both the QBs in this game seem faster, better in the open field and better body control.  Neither are pocket passers, but seem to throw better than Flowers.  We're clearly behind here (granted, QF has fewer starts than both, but maybe not by more than a year).

I didn't watch the game, but I have watched both teams this year in previous weeks. Not saying Quinton is a better play maker than either one of their QBs, but those defenses against HOU and SMU have to respect the pass which opens up the field and creates a heck of a lot more opportunity to make a play with their legs. They're not dealing with 8-10 defensive players within 7 yards of the LOS every play like Quinton is. Their coaches are in the business of helping their play makers, not making it more difficult on them (obviously I really don't feel like Taggart is trying to make it more difficult on our guys, but it sure does seem like it sometimes).

  13. possibly because they don't get open on a regular basis......

Listen I've been critical of Taggart lately because of his conservative style. I'm not a huge fan of his play calling. It seems as though he wants to win every game 17-10 and he never seems to want to attack the edges with our speed. I don't think it's realistic and I believe you need to have a different plan for each opponent. Attacking their weakness, even if it means going against your strength especially when they've proven they can stop it but there are so many people on here that just criticize everything he does.

I'm honestly surprised some of you haven't criticized him for putting his pants on one leg at a time. That's how far some of these reaches have been.

I mean it's quite possible. Anything is possible, but we don't throw the ball enough for anyone to really know if they're getting open or not on a regular basis. There have been plenty of missed throws on wide open receivers on the few times we have thrown. On top of that, when we do throw the football we're down late in the 4th quarter when the defense knows we are throwing and playing 6+ defensive backs on the field so you're probably not going to see wide open receivers.
