Not really, the whole picture should be letting the season play out, or at least get into conference play. While some relish going over and over the last two years, they really don't mean ****, especially considering the different moving parts we have now. Using the Florida game as a negative if we lay an egg at Louisville, saying that would convince him that CJS isn't the answer is ridiculous to anyone using logic and/or common sense ...

Totally ignoring his overall record to this point is not using logic or common sense. I'm not saying Jeff Scott should be fired, but it is not ridiculous for anyone to be questioning or not real confident that he's the guy for the job given his performance with Wins and Losses.

  2. Nice post, but the guy is paid $1.8 million a year. Him getting the team ready and prepared is doing what he's paid to do. Praising him for that, after a loss that moves him to 1-20 against FBS opponents makes it seem like this program has just lost it completely. Let's save the thanking for when we actually win a game. I am very pleased with how they played, but for the coach who's motto is "the best is the standard" don't think he needs props for a close loss. Hoping this is the beginning of some wins though.

How many times in Scott's tenure have you seen a game like that?? One game, either way, doesn't make or break a season, or answer the important question. A corner wasn't turned Saturday but it did offer clear signs of legitimate hope. We very well may "lay an egg" against the Cards but to be "totally convinced" CJS isn't the answer because of that is kind of ridiculous ...

Obviously, he's taking the whole picture into consideration. If we lose to Louisville, Jeff Scott will be 1-21 against FBS opponents in his 3rd year. I would imagine that plays a large role in anyone believing he's not the answer and wouldn't think that's ridiculous at all.

Although the pass should have been better, let's not pretend we have a wily ol' veteran here, he only attempted 37 passes total his first 3 years ....... but he's going to need to get back to his pre-injury form of last year for us to have even limited success.

Wily Ol' veteran? I said he's a 5th year Junior which he is. He isn't a 19 year old kid who has barely played any college football. At this point I think we're going to have to run him into the ground to have success and pray for no injury. The throwing just isn't there.

Great play call for sure.  I wish the receiver tried a bit harder to catch that one.  I still think UF really hadn't shown any ability to stop us from running so to me running the ball until they did makes a lot of sense there.

I'm just glad there was finally a game where we can have debates like this...instead of debates over how early we're leaving/turning off the game.  Hopefully this is a point for them to learn/grow from and snag some wins very soon!

We have a 5th year Junior, Davey O'Brien watch list QB. That not being a completed pass is on Bohanon. I wish Bohanon made a decent throw. He hasn't shown the ability to hit a WR in stride. Even if it's only a half decent throw it's likely at worst a 40 yard gain and potentially ends that game.

Bottom line is our staff called a great game, and had us in position to win against a top 20 team. Our offense carved the Gators up, and the defense held up better than just about anybody would have expected. Can't put the bad snap that went past Bohanon on the coaching staff. Same with the hold on that kick. We were at the doorstep, just didn't quite execute on a couple of critical plays. I'm more than ok with CJS and his staff tonight.

More than 1 thing can be true at once. The coaching staff did a very good job preparing the team and putting them in positions to make plays. The snaps absolutely killed them. What can also be true is why call a timeout with 15 seconds left in the half to attempt a 50 yard Fg? Why are you trying to give them time to do something if you miss or something goes wrong or forcing your team to kick off? Why not call the timeout with 4 seconds left? Why are you settling for a 48 yard Fg instead of doing your best to make it closer on a pass play at the end of the game?

I just would have preferred a shot at the end zone.  Maybe you get a pick.  Maybe you get a pass interference.  Maybe you have to kick but you at least *tried* for the win.

Nah, can’t try for the endzone. Have to give yourself a chance at kicking a game tying FG. What you can do is try your best to give your team the BEST opportunity to tie the game and that’s get as many of those yards back as possible. If people think running a HB draw there is the coaches giving our team the best opportunity to tie that game god bless em.

USF had quite a bit of success running the ball all night, not so much passing.  UF only had their 4 DL on the play ... I would say the chances were better to get 5-8 yards with Battie running than Bohannon throwing.

So you’d rather run it at their 415 lb DT? Lol. Would love for someone to run the numbers on the % of success for college kickers making a 40-43 yard Fg vs a 47-50. That play call is trash in that situation. Again, it’s a play call of I'm just happy to be here.

  9. At a certain point, blind faith becomes foolishness. As pointed out by a few, the defensive approach has been better (more agressive, blitzing, etc.) which has resulted in more sacks/TFL to this point, but good grief it still looks awfully easy at times for the opposing offenses. Offensively, we've been sold this wonderful top GRIT score QB that has a TD goal of 40 for the season for himself and has 0 through 2 games (one coming against an FCS school). Trickett needs to rely on Bohanon as a rusher to make the defense have to consider that at all times. Although, I'm sure at this point the coaches are scared out of their minds of him getting hurt with who we have behind him forget it. If he doesn't start relying on him as a runner, let's pray grit scores can turn into making better throws that our WRs don't have to do a full 360 to have a chance to catch. Then on top of it all, our progrum leader Jeff Scott talks about Clemson every step of the way. Sure makes it seem like he's in over his head and insecure, so he immediately references Clemson over and over and over until ears bleed. Hoping for the best, including a 5 win season that I was expecting coming into the year. From what I've seen so far, I'll be very surprised if they can manage to get 5 wins.

New D scheme so nobody on the field really familiar/comfortable with it with live bullets flying and a hurry up offense by a well oiled machine .... a recipe for disaster. If the next couple of teams we play don't go to a no huddle from the get go they're crazy.

Part of this is fair. For the life of me I can't find how much we're paying Shoop, but I'd imagine it's somewhere near $400,000+ a season? If he's not smart enough to either figure out how to get his play calls in quicker to allow the defense to get set up or unable to make adjustments to give the defense a chance to be set up in time that's a disgrace. Happened all night.

  11. I didn't expect a win and did not expect a super close game. I did however, expect us not to look like a high school football team. We played them better last year. On the road, with less talent, with a true freshman QB that everyone is so quick to point out how much better Bohanon is. Gives off the impression that things are going backwards even if they might not be.

Apparently he suffered a concussion, which is why he left the field. I can't speak to the first two plays, but you are wrong about the TD.  The WR that scored was on Amarrs Brown, who was caught watching the QB while the WR ran right by him.  Hill, as the nickel back, was covering the slot receiver.  You can see the players' position here:

I stand corrected. Absolutely brutal, what the heck is Brown doing there my goodness. I'll die on the "hill" in regards to the other two plays though lol

Hill might have gotten hurt, as Scott mentioned in the presser there were quite a few injuries tonight.  I didn't think he played that poorly, mostly because BYU was running or throwing to other WRs.

The offensive play calling was so conservative, I was reminded of Sterlin Gilbert far too many times.  I hope that changes later in the season.  It doesn't help when Horn undercuts a route that would have been a TD or when the WRs drop balls that hit them in the hands... or when Weaver fails to block a guy that gets a pick six.  All of that should be correctable in the next two weeks.

I don't expect a win in G'ville... but with some offensive and defensive corrections, it should at least be less than 30 points, hopefully less than 20.

Horn didn't undercut the route. Bohanon overthrew him from what I saw.

If you didn't see how badly Hlil played tonight then you weren't watching him. Three specific plays come to mind for me. First, on a run play he got himself stuck behind one of our defenders getting blocked by a BYU player. Took himself completely out of the play. Second, I saw him a few times get absolutely manhandled by WRs down the field blocking on run plays. One of the plays he went on a ride for about 15 yards and I couldn't tell if he just didn't try to shed the block or if he's just not capable. Third, he completely blew a coverage which led to their 4th TD of the game. The 21 yard pass was a blown coverage by him. He didn't touch the field again after that. I don't think it was injury, It was extremely obvious he should not be be starting on our defense after we've seen him the last season + out there.

  14. He says, "Ya know, this reminds me about a time at Clemson when we had lost quite a few games and we couldn't seem to get it right and really struggling but we believed in ourselves and we believed in our coaches and we believed that we were UNITED. We were bamboo trees. We had planted the tree, but they grow for years under ground, and then all of a sudden BAM. They shoot up. That's what we had at Clemson during that time, and I still believe that's what we have here. We're going to have a good progrum just gotta fix the mistakes."

Bless your heart... people are gonna roast you alive.

I *wish* I could say I saw something.  I stayed til our last offensive series and after the turnover on downs I literally didn't want to watch anything more.  Game was almost over, and I hate leaving early...but what I saw being called was just awful and I couldn't stand watching it.

Felt like every series we did a delayed handoff ->run up middle, run again, then pass to sideline (or some combination of that).  No tempo, only a couple of deep shots....the most 'vanilla of vanilla'.  It felt like they developed the game plan for a rookie and were sticking to it no matter what tonight.

Then afterwards I hear from the coaches comments "the run was shut down and its hard to throw when that happens"....  Well what about passing to setup the run with a QB on national watch lists who won a Big12 conference and supposedly had 80-90% completion in camp.  Do you wanna maybe make a gameplan that's pass heavy to take advantage of that?  Or just keep doing dinks and dunks when it's clear from like the second series of the game the defense is literally waiting on those sideline throws to jump on?

    Right on the money.

Didn't blame last year on Timmy but certainly didn't blame tonight on Bohanon.  He certainly had no help.

McClain had zero chance at success last year. As a true freshman, on a horrendous team, with terrible play calling. I will say our offensive game plan tonight was atrocious too. Bohanon was just off on a lot of throws. Should have had Horn for a TD in the first half but over threw him, threw behind players quite a few times (some of them should have still been caught), but the majority of the throws Trickett dialed up were 5 yards or closer to the line of scrimmage.

While today is not what we hoped, the fact is we have a good amount of transfers, new coaches, BYU has a monster (and VERY experienced lines, and jitters by Bohanon.

I see life in this team and a willingness to improve.  I still believe in CJS — when most of the team wants to play for you, it says something.

Jitters by the 5th year Junior who is our "leader" and has an incredible GRIT score? Probably not a good sign.

WE heard about how much better this team is, how much deeper, how they are ready to compete, how the practices are so much harder now, the players work so much more, the transfers are so much better than the players they replaced, the oline is so experienced , the dline is much improved, the defensive backs are better, the line backers are ready to make plays, and ready to push around other teams, the passing attack is going to be so much better, the defense is going to be so much better, the players have no quit and really want to be here, and the new coordinators are going to improve the team.

We heard about the fantastic GRIT scores!!

Was this bad? Yes... this is bad... but there's no reason to get totally worked up.  It's just the first game.

The team is not as good as we hoped (or perhaps led to believe).  This is not the end of the world ... at least not yet.

Watching the game the issues APPEAR TO BE correctable... defense getting caught out of position by the tempo and misdirection... offense missing blocks and dropping balls...

BYU made USF look like a Class A high school team... that doesn't necessarily mean USF is actually that bad... BYU may be that good (may be).

So ... Howard next week will not be a good gauge - USF should dominate...

Let's see if the coaching staff can correct these mistakes.

One game does not a season make ... or break.

Calm Down Chill Out GIF by Bounce

Most of this is reasonable. However, there are major red flags. They hyped up Matthew Hill all spring and said he was the MVP. He was absolutely terrible last year and he was just as bad the first quarter tonight. They did make the adjustment and don't think he saw the field after the first quarter tonight, but an average joe can tell that kid is not a starting FBS defender. I think 70+% of Bohanon's pass attempts tonight were 5 yards or closer to the line of scrimmage. With how much we've been told about Bohanon and his Grit score + the weapons we have (Horn/Weaver) we should be letting it rip. Didn't happen. If we beat an 0-2 FCS team easily, that won't tell us anything either. We need to hope BYU is a legit top 10 football team because if not it's going to be an incredibly long season again.
