Thoughts about our defense

I was just thinking about this.  So, last season, we went to the 4-2 defense to stop spread teams and it worked fairly well once everything gelled.  This season, not so much.   Now we have two differences between the seasons; the personnel and the coach.  Since the scheme is the same, it either has to be we don't have the players to run the 4-2 effectively or the coach is calling the wrong plays at the wrong times.  I happen to think it is both.

Back in the Bucs heyday, they ran a 4-3, 2-deep as their base defense and they were phenomenal at it.  They had the personnel to run it and I'm sure they could have handled a spread offense without any problem.

After all of this rambling, my point is, I don't think we have the players to run a 4-2

We need to go back to a 4-3 also.

Our defense suffered ever since the WKU Bowl Game, and IIRC Tom Allen was already gone. He had a HUGE impact on our D, and little did we know that the bowl game lame D was a sign of things to come for this year.

Allen coached in the Bowl game too.  People also forget Navy racked up over 400 yards on the ground last year while Allen was here.  There were definitely signs of this last year.

No defense works when your d line can't get pressure or set the edge consistently.  IMO our DTs haven't performed as great as I thought they would and the defensive ends are lackluster.

COACHING! But in the sense that we simply do not hit anybody. As old as I am I wouldn't fear being hit by our defense most of the time.
