It was a reactionary hire and he was hired to be the complete opposite of CJL which not everyone responded to and he probably felt compelled to take to an extreme, we decided to focus on academics and he had to have people that qualified be rejected by an arbitrary board and this was by far the biggest stage he ever competed on and maybe it wasn’t the best fit for him (we will see if he ever moved up again).

This is a really great summary. It really was a combination of probably having Peter Principled, some academic restrictions(which Taggart didn't seem to struggle with) and not working well with what Leavitt had left and not recruiting all that well. He does seem to be a solid/above average coach at other levels.

To be honest I know it’s not a popular take but with what we have I would have honestly considered no starting McCloud and running the triple option and if I was too afraid of getting stoned I would probably start McCloud and run pretty close to the Gulf Coast Offense.

I'll give you this. It's probably no worse than any other idea to try with this talent level.

He's at FAU and basically tied up to Taggart's hip for a reason. I love CJL and appreciate what he did for USF but I have trouble calling a coach great when they have never won anything of real significance. If he was truly "great" in the results based business that is coaching he would have to more than opportunities than following CWT around. People will look the other way in coaching if you are truly great. They haven't for CJL....

Exactly. All of his faults would be overlooked if he could deliver winners.

He hasn't, so that's why he is where he is.

honestly I only care if he can recruit. that's how you win in college.

nobody was going to come in and revolutionize the game with their play calling and the lowest rated QB in the AAC, last I checked we weren't going to bring in the top assistants from Alabama to help him and signing transfers at the last minute is always a crapshoot especially when spring is cancelled and half the players miss time due to the virus(hint: they left their other schools for a reason).

It's obvious that you are trying to protect Leavitt's legacy.  You made the same tired arguments about Taggart's lack of early success. 10 months into Scott's tenure with all he has dealt with is absurd though.

Yup. Slick salesman Taggart struck recruiting gold and turned the team around.

Nobody, not even St. Jim could do anything with the players Strong left us with. If people are arguing differently they need to find a new hobby. The broken record is old.

No one disagrees that our current roster is not going to allow anyone to go undefeated what I take umbrage with is that it’s not talented enough to go .500 in the AAC and that it was completely decimated in a single season but that it will take three seasons to get back to where it started. The current talent level was able to beat the number 9 team in the country one year ago  and if that much can change in a single season it would be nice to see our current coach get on the positive side of that change instead of seeing how far we can plummet.

CCS left us with a roster that is not good enough to compete in the AAC.

I can’t disagree and pay a mint as well but I made the annual purchase because I think our BB team will make it worthwhile.  But who knows this is USF athletics.  The football team is not worth 5 cents let alone 5 bucks.

I get HBO, and because I get HBO on cable, I get HBO Max as well. The hill I'm gonna die on, and nobody else needs to, is that ESPN+ should be part of my ESPN cable package .

This year I'm saving myself a small bit of money and a lot of misery it seems.

Players that want to win won't come here. We are the new UConn and may not sniff a bowl game until 2022. This mythical cycle that everyone talks about is ridiculous - once you run a program into the ground you become radioactive to talent.

Kelly dealt this program a death blow by keeping the CCS cancer around a year too long. It killed recruiting, it killed the results on the field, it killed fan interest. To only distribute 5k tickets and have 1k people actually attend is a disgrace.

I feel the same way about recruits as I do about coaches. Just as you and I agreed that even if we fired Strong after year 2, as we should have, despite people saying we'd be toxic for coaches, that there are so many coaches looking for work that we'd get one, and we'd want the one intelligent enough to say "Wow, it seems weird to fire a guy with a winning record but I just watched your season and I understand why." that the same would apply to recruits, there are lots of players wanting to play at the college level and we'd get some, and we'd get some who recognize they could play immediately and show their stuff.

Maybe not enough to dominate right away, but enough to show progress and get more people to commit.

    O

That’s not the point in my mind. The fact that I can watch East Nowhere State VS St. Patricks Girls Academy Boys Team football on normal channels yet not find USF is a huge “advertising” miss. Look up the number of subscribers to the four letter+ network. Out of sight out of mind (maybe a good thing this year). In today’s tough bar and restaurant environment how many places will simply say ‘Nope we don’t get that channel here’. The loss of casual and non but interested fans will eventually translate to apathy and ignorance of the program.  As a season ticket holder since the first year even I have found myself losing interest since games were on the Ocho plus. Listened on the radio but not the same. No interest in dealing with even a temporary subscription. Maybe my loss but definitely a loss for the program.

The point for me is I already pay for a large sports package including many ESPN channels already so I'm not paying another $5 to ESPN because they won't deign to put our games on broadcast.
