  1. Capitalists complaining about capitalism is funny. If you think a first round matchup of Kentucky vs Oklahoma wouldn’t draw more eyeballs and drive more revenue than Kentucky vs Oakland, you are mistaken. Would it be as fun for me personally to watch? Definitely not, but I wouldn’t not watch it and neither would you.

  2. It is unsurprising that this analysis is down on USF given the number of games with huge point swings (complete comebacks and nearly blown big leads) this team has had this season. To have that number of games with huge swings is anomalous. To have won all of those games is even less probable. Call it luck, heart, “gritty not pretty” or whatever, but if one were to graph the number of teams with those in game swings and winning results, this USF team would probably be multiple standard deviations outside of the average outcome.

There are a good deal of posters here whose USF fandom began before Football became a reality. MBB has always held a special place in our hearts. Through many painful seasons over the decades last night was a win for all of us. It's been a long time coming to hang the banner that will ascend the top of the YC. I can only imagine how the OG feels this morning after witnessing USF history last night.

That shouldn’t matter. We play in the same league, we beat them at their place, and have won 6 more conference game than they have. I’m not sure what else you’d need to determine who is better.

Perhaps a conference tournament at the end of the regular season with teams seeded according to their head to head records would be an excellent and fair way to determine who is in fact better.

Was it louder than the UF game in 2001? Even while taking a L that day, the loudness of the Dome rivaled the WVU game when the INT was returned for six.

No, but to be fair, for the UF game, I was really high up and also just really high, so maybe I’m not the best judge. I think there were more students at the game in 01. In 01, I waited in a really long line wrapping around the rec center just to get a ticket in the 300s behind the basket (student section was courtside then). This game was definitely more of a community crowd of casual fans.

Those last 10 minutes were brutal but I finally got to show my kid a good product from USF athletics.

  6. This is not the resume of a top 25 team:

    BBALLNET.COM

2024 South Fla. Quad wins for NCAA College Basketball. NET rankings...

You can’t lose to Maine and Central Michigan and expect anything good to come of that. There are 300+ teams and at least 100 other teams that have empirically and demonstrably performed better than USF thus far in the season. This team also hasn’t played many quality teams while many other teams do so on a day to day basis. That's a big factor and part of why this team isn’t ranked. While great by our standards, there are a lot of other teams that are better. Just win the conference tourney.

  7. This team can shoot over a zone (at least recently) and has a couple guys that can get buckets one on one. That’s the big difference this year. Past teams would fold up in the face of a 2-3 zone and pass the ball around the perimeter until the shot clock hit single digits, then throw up a panicked shot. I say good riddance to that offense.

I have never seen such egregious one-sided refereeing in all my years of watching college football. Take away the touchdown they basically gave UF (bull**** pass interference to put UF in the red zone followed by an even more bull**** personal foul to give them a first down after we had stopped them on third down) and we win that game. We outplayed them in almost every way today and only lost that game because of the refs. Even the one call they made against UF for a personal foul late hit on a kickoff they were confused and tried to call it on us even though we were the one with the player down and injured on the field because of the late hit (called it on UF, then switched it to USF, then back to UF). Just total bull**** in every sense of the word. We were ****ing robbed and I hope everyone with a platform that watched the game makes it known. I’m furious!

You forgot the non call in the first half at the goal line where Weaver got tackled going up for a pass in the end zone and we settled for a FG.

Caleb Murphy leaving? Meh. Blessed with super athleticism. Basketball skills? Nothing more than average. For those who remember the name, Caleb is Jimmy Baxter with a slightly better handle and far less range.

Baxter could jump twice as high as Murphy, and I would say was the best athlete I've seen in person. He ended up having a respectable career in Europe.

Who do you have run the point then? You can't put Greene there because he is not a distributor and is our best outside shooter - we need to be running him off screens not having 9 sets of eyeballs watching him bring it up the court. Chaplin is a true small forward and is starting to surge, so do you flip flop and him and Murphy? Now you have 2 players out of position

Even if you had a capable PG replacement, Murphy can't play the 2 because he has abandoned shooting open 3 pointers (in favor of taking one dribble in for a contested long 2 pointer). He plays more like a small forward but he is too small for that position. Whatever you gain, if anything, in playing him at the 2 or 3 you more than give up by the downgrade at the point position.

The only solution is to keep Murphy there and develop him.

Alternatively, another ball handler to free up Murphy plus a better rebounding front court or more active hands in the back court would generate fast break opportunities that would play to the strengths of guys like Murphy and Chaplin. Those two guys are often the best athletes on the floor against most of the teams we face. That is this team’s strength and not figuring out a way to push in transition more often instead of the “watch Murphy dribble around the perimeter” offense is a huge mistake by Gregory IMO.

There is nobody else to run the point until Trey Moss develops, so here we are.
