  1. That way, if we win, I can say big-wuptee-dam-doo, we beat a team with nothing to play for.  Whereas if we lose, I can say Leavitt sucks as a coach, we should have fired him 3 years ago, as this proves he can't even win games where the other team does not care.  In either case I get to say I told you so.  This way I do not have to watch the game, I can just go with one of these two options.

[The above is said in jest and in my amazement, as a relative newcomer, of some of the fans on thise site]

  2. CJL does seem to like them.

I believe it was Tom Landry who when asked about his penchant for running trick plays in the early Cowboys days said that football should not be just about trying to outpersonnel the other team, especially when you were short in the personnel department.  In short, the trick plays are an outgrowth of not believing that we can outtalent the other team in a particular game or situation.  We ran no trick plays against UCF, FAMU or Syracuse (I'm going by the radio feed so I do not remember exactly); all of whom we were clearly better than.

The end around at Pitt with 6 minutes left and that atrocious reverse pass with Denson at UConn were both on 3rd down when conventional play calling failed on first and second.  I am sure we will see one or two this weekend.

Also, we did not run "reverses" against Louisville, they were all "end arounds" as there was no change in direction as Amarri kept the ball all three times.

  3. When WVU is on offense:

White and Slaton have exceptional speed to the outside.  Slaton's carries outside the tackles will not get them a whole lot due to our speed.  However, in between the tackles, Slaton and the other WVU back can do some serious damage as we have been giving up yardage in that area.  Also, Pat White seems most dangerous when he drops back to pass and then runs on either a designed draw or when no one is open.  When our D-line and any blitzing linebacker get to far upfield he has a Vick-like ability to exploit those gaps.  Our D will have to play White like the Bucs play Vick, stay in front, don't give him running lanes and make him pass.  If he is succesful running then we will lose as I don't think our offense could keep up.

When we have the ball, we need to feed Andre Hall on the ground and screens and flare outs (yes I know we don't have a screen in our gameplan), and of course the WRs will have to hold on to the ball and PJ will have to protect the ball.  If the offense does not make turnovers, I think the D can keep it close and give us a chance.  As with Louisville, we will need an A+ effort.

  4. I am upset at the UConn loss, but that was a great ride.  That was the reason we (collectively) were thrilled to be in the Big East - win 5 games in a row and end up in the Sugar Bowl.  Yes we lost that chance, but for those 3 weeks I was as excited as I have been since USF got a team and a lot of the other firsts along the way.  We were not good enough this year as a team (coaching or playing) to go all the way but we have WVU and hopefully a bowl to get the ride rolling for next year.  Hope to see you guys on Saturday!

  5. Will not help us before WVU, but some things do need to change as was ably noted by many of you.  I think as USF fans we all want our team to win every game, and we all make statements and suggestions (some more vociferously than others) on here and elsewhere that we think will help our team.  Further, I do not think any fan on here is supporting or wanting mediocrity.  However, it seems to me that the fundamental difference in views is whether this program is UMiami or UF/FSU.

UMiami = lots of local talent, keep it home and you will win with a good but not great coach (Schnellenberger, Johnson, Erickson, Butch Davis, Coker) but missing the alumni and resources of UF/FSU.

US/FSU = lots of alumni and resources and needed a great coach (Spurrier and Bowden(yes I know some think they are not "great coaches" but I think we would all take for USF the best 10 years either of those guys had)), but had to work harder to get recruits.

I do not know the answer, but I think its interesting to wonder what we are and it explains some folks loyalty to CJL as opposed to some of the cries for Butch Davis.

  6. What do you hope for during the weekly comments?

-We're going to kick this team's behind because we're better at every position.

-Their coach is a moron, we should win easy.

    -They're 1-8 for a reason; they suck.

-Their front 4 couldn't tackle an 85 year old St. Pete resident, Andre should get 300 yards on the ground.

Just what do you expect him to say that wouldn't either give motivation to the other team or tip off the other team as to what we might want to do (I admit running the ball on first down is not hard to figure out, but hear me out.)
