  1. PALO ALTO, Calif. – The University of South Florida’s Gabriela Duch and Neyssa Etienne advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2006 NCAA Doubles Championships Friday afternoon, defeating Kentucky’s doubles squad of Kim Coventry and Carolina Escamilla , 6-1, 6-0 at the Taube Tennis Center on the Campus of the University of Stanford.

USF’s No. 9 ranked tandem advance to face the winner of the Tiffany Clifford/Sarah Foster (Texas A&M) and Sara Anundsen/Jenna Long, UNC second round match. The match will be played on Saturday with the time TBD.

The entire match was dominated by USF, who fought through gusting winds to avenge an earlier regular season loss at the hands of the Kentucky team.

On Feb. 25, the Wildcat’s duo defeated Duch/Etienne in a 4-3 Kentucky victory in Tampa, Fla.

With the win, Duch and Etienne will both gain All-American status for the 2005-06 season.

This marks the first time a USF doubles team has received All-American Status since 1984.

“They (Duch and Etienne) played one of the best tennis matches I have seen them play,†said head coach Agustin Moreno.†“I’m happy to see such hard working student-athletes reach their goals and get rewarded with All-American status.â€Â

  2. In defense of Tennis. We have a brand new coach this year who the girls love and is going to bring in a lot of top notch talent to this school.

They reached the NCAA's for the first time since 2000 where they lost to San Diego St. in the first round.

This was also the first time in school history the tennis team made it to the second round of the NCAA's.

If you guys aren't happy with this progress then I don't know what to tell you!

Give a few bucks to tennis maybe, and imagine how good they might be with a little bit of a budget!

    Release: 05/13/2006

Gainesville, Fla. – The University of South Florida women’s tennis team’s season came to an end Saturday afternoon when the No. 4 seed Florida Gators defeated the Bulls, 4-0, in the second round of the NCAA Championships, in Gainesville, Fla.

“I’m proud of my team. It’s a pity that due to the region we have to play a team like Florida, who I thought should have been higher ranked,†said head coach Agustin Moreno. “I thought we competed well. There were a couple of big points in the doubles match that could have gone either way and maybe we could have pulled the upset.â€Â

The Bulls couldn’t garner any momentum against Florida after their first round victory against the University of Maryland.

Florida won doubles matches at the No. 1 and 2 spots to take the 1-0 advantage going into singles competition.

The clinching match came when UF’s Whitney Benik and Alexis Gordon downed USF’s No. 1 doubles team of Neyssa Etienne and Gabriela Duch, 8-5.

The Gators didn’t let up on the Bulls in singles competition, taking matches at the No. 4, 5 and 6 positions, to clinch the match and earn a birth to the Sweet 16 in Palo Alto, Calif.

“I believe we competed well and to tell you the truth I don’t think Florida is a No. 4 seed, said Moreno. “I think they have a better chance of beating Stanford than anyone else, because they (Florida) have won NCAA championships and are really competitive positions one through six.â€Â

USF finished the season with a 17-6 record.

Three Bulls will be making the trip to Palo Alto, Claif. to participate in the singles and doubles championships.

Sophomore Courtney Vernon was selected as an alternate for the singles championships and the doubles team of Etienne and Duch were an at-large selection in the doubles championships.

The 64-player singles and 32-team doubles competitions will be conducted May 23-28 at the Taube (pronounced TOE-be) Tennis Center in Stanford, California, following the conclusion of the team championship (May 18-22). Stanford University serves as host.

  4. I just wanted to let everyone know that the tennis teams play tomorrow at 10 am and 11 am at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts on the corner of Holly and Maple on campus.

Tennis might not be a major sport at USF but the athletes definitly know and appreciate when people show up to support them even if it's only for a little while.

Women play FAU at 10 and the Men play Georgia State at 11. It's one of the only times all season that you can catch both teams at the same time. You never know, you can enjoy it and come back and watch again! They really are fun to watch!

They are all aproachable after their matches as well so you can get to know them and talk to them.

Go out and cheer on your BULLS! If you have any questions, let me know.
