Bulls Defeat No. 15 Florida for Their First Home Series Win in Six Years TAMPA, Fla. (April 13, 2005) – The USF softball team picked up its first win of the season against No. 15 Florida, 5-2, and its first home win against its in-state rival since a 6-0 victory on March 7, 1998. Bree Spence (14-11) dominated the Gators on the mound, thwarting Florida’s batters when it counted. Spence only gave up two runs – only one was earned – on eight hits while stranding four Florida base runners. The Clearwater, Fla., native didn’t walk a batter in her six innings of work. Spence got into some trouble in the top of the seventh. After loading the bases on three singles with no outs, reliever Kasey Cash came into the game for Spence in a lefty-versus-lefty matchup. Cash struck out Shelly Stevens for the first out of the inning and then reliever Nicole Christensen came into the game for Cash. Christensen got Lauren Roussell to ground into a double play to end the game and Christensen picked up her first save of the season. USF (29-20) opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first, putting three runs on the board. Krista Holle hit her fifth home run of the season – a single shot over the left-field fence. Back-to-back RBI singles by Carly Griffin and Spence gave the Bulls the 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the fourth inning Carmela Liwag added two more runs on the board, hitting her first home run of the season – a two-run shot to left center to put the Bulls up 5-2. The Bulls return to Conference USA action this weekend when they take on Charlotte in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday and on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the USF Softball Field.
