  1. You have a very strange way of looking at things. If he was STILL the USF AD he would be listed as such, but he's NOT. They therefore list the College he played for. They didn't list the BUCS, so should they be pissed too?  :
  2. Nope CJL will be on between 4-5 according to Greg in his blog: Immediate perks Looking for the impact of USF's new radio contract for football broadcasts with Clear Channel's WFLA 970 AM? Football coach Jim Leavitt will be on another CC station, WDAE 620 AM today on Steve Duemig's afternoon drive-time show for a full hour from 4 to 5 p.m. Leavitt's weekly call-in show will be on 620 this fall, following Bucs postgame coverage on Sunday nights. I realize this blog will reach maybe 5-6 fans between now and 4, but fans who want to listen online can do so here. Just click on the "Listen Live" button. I'll tune in just to hear Duemig try to pronounce "Julmiste." USF also had Lee Roy Selmon on 620 this morning with Ron Diaz and Ian Beckles. http://www.sptimes.com/blogs/usf/
  3. First we need the tel number. Anybody have it? 4. "Funny" is not the way I would describe his looks. Maybe your dawg can play with him sometime.  ;D
  5. The guy who's really MIA is WR Ishmael Grant. Hard to believe that the NCAA hasn't made a decision on whether to clear him yet.
  6. This board does have a tendency to over react about everything. ;D
  7. BULLieve me if it was it would have been all over the papers by now.
  8. We did it before and we can do it again. We weren't playing for anything when we lost last year. 1-1 in Football and 2-0 in Basketball! ÂÂ
  9. He's probably just pouting for being behind Jackson on the depth chart at the moment.
  10. Welcome PSU78 as our 1500th member. There have been a number of threads concerning USF fans going to the PSU game. By running a search here on this particular board I found a number of them and am posting the links below. You can of course respond to any of those threads as well and they will then show up on the first page. http://www.thebullspen.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=news;action=display;num=1118086155;start=12#12 http://www.thebullspen.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=news;action=display;num=1121544265;start= http://www.thebullspen.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=news;action=display;num=1124038590;start=1#1 http://www.thebullspen.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=news;action=display;num=1124038590;start=14#14 http://www.thebullspen.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=news;action=display;num=1124117216;start=0#0 http://www.thebullspen.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=news;action=display;num=1124391224;start=1#1 http://www.thebullspen.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=news;action=display;num=1124552225;start=0#0 http://www.thebullspen.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=news;action=display;num=1124713665;start=4#4
  11. Rubin Has Background To Return Bucs To Respectability By ROY CUMMINGS rcummings@tampatrib.com Published: Aug 24, 2005 TAMPA - Karl Williams, who racked up more yardage as a punt returner than any other player in Bucs history, dropped in on his old team a couple of weeks ago. He was looking for work, and it just so happens the Bucs have an opening at Williams' old position -- a wide opening. With the preseason half over, the Bucs still have no idea who they'll have returning punts this season. It could be Torrie Cox, but his mishandling of two punts this preseason has the Bucs considering other options. It could be Ian Smart, but he may not make the team, so the Bucs don't really want to lean on him. Joey Galloway is always an option, but with Galloway's history of injuries the Bucs would rather save him for regular duty and leave him off special teams. The same goes for Cadillac Williams. That leaves DeAndrew Rubin, the University of South Florida product who still holds a handful of USF punt return records, including the marks for most returns for a touchdown (four), career average (16.4) and longest return (91 yards). "He's a natural catcher," Bucs coach Jon Gruden said of Rubin, who came into the NFL two years ago as a seventh-round pick by the Packers. "He has a great background returning punts in college, so obviously he has potential." Like Cox and Smart, Rubin has been given a pretty good chance to show off that potential. So far, though, he has yet to find his groove and make an impact. On four returns, Rubin has gained just 7 yards, six of which came on one return. But the Bucs seem to believe those poor results are due at least in part to poor blocking. "We have to do a better job of protecting him, getting some blocks for him," Bucs special teams coach Richard Bisaccia said. "I mean, he's a guy who can make the first guy miss." The Bucs haven't had very many of those during their 29 seasons. Leon Bright was the first Buc to return more than 10 punts and produce the 10-plus yards per return they want, but he only did it for a year (1985). A handful of others, including Bobby Futrell, Courtney Hawkins and Jacquez Green, turned in acceptable results for a year, but it wasn't until Williams came along in 1996 the Bucs finally found some stability at that spot. Williams began to lose his touch just about the time Gruden came to Tampa, though, and finding a player to replace him has been a problem for the Bucs' coach since. "It's been a major disappointing part of my career here in Tampa," Gruden said when asked about punt returners. "We've tried everybody from Bill Schroeder to Tim Brown to Karl Williams. "We've gone to Torrie Cox now and Ian Smart. I'm concerned about it. I'm disappointed with our inability to secure the ball and make plays. It really has been disappointing. "We've got a guy in Joey Galloway who's got a knack for doing that, but we're trying to find a guy who can take that off his plate because Galloway's had injury problems." The Bucs really thought Cox could do that for them. After all, he proved last year to be quite a threat as a kick returner, ranking fourth in the league in that department with a 26.2-yard average. But returning punts is nothing like returning kicks. The ball comes down differently and there is usually a lot less room to work with before a charging would-be tackler is right on top of you. "I'm still figuring it out," Cox said. "You have to keep your eye on the ball and not worry about a man running down and you getting hit. You have to concentrate on the ball and that's something I haven't been doing. "You have to watch it all the way down until you receive it. Look it in. Once you get the ball everything else will take care of itself, but the hardest part is being patient." Rubin, a speedy wide receiver who had touchdown returns of 55, 56, 81 and 91 yards while playing for the Bulls, learned all those lessons long ago. "You have to make good decisions back there," he said. "You have to know which way the ball is going to come down, which way the bottom of the ball is pointing; there's a lot of things to it. "But I've been doing it for a long time now and I feel pretty comfortable, especially in this atmosphere, here in Tampa. I feel right at home and comfortable with it here." Rubin's next chance to prove he should be the Bucs' return man won't come in Tampa. It will come in Miami on Saturday night, when the Bucs take on the Dolphins. Rubin's chance to make an NFL roster may ride on the results. He's trying to earn a spot as a receiver, but knows his work on special teams will probably decide his fate. "I've been doing pretty well as a receiver; I've been working at all the positions so I feel pretty good there and I'm comfortable with the offense," Rubin said. "But everybody knows that special teams are one of the most important parts of football and that that's where you have to make the team. But I think I can do that. "I mean, I feel comfortable returning balls. It's all natural to me. I feel like I'm a good punt returner, and I feel comfortable back there. I think this is a good chance for me." "Special teams is where you have to make the team." DeANDREW RUBIN http://bucs.tbo.com/bucs/MGBSVRP2RCE.html Cummings should hae mentioned the 42 yard return and some of his other plays where there were penalties, to help prove his point..
  12. Congrats to Brad for running a class operation for years. That's one of the reasons for this site's success and of course the great USF fans.
  13. They just said Leavitt will join Steve in studio for an hour today and will take phone calls. Did he say it would be on at 4PM I missd it exactly?
  14. I noticed this blurb on WDAE: Also Tuesday, the USF Bulls ruled starting safety Danny Verpaele (broken foot) out for the opener against Penn State. Beginning with that game, the USF football contests will air for the first time on sister station 970 WFLA. Jim Leavitt, whose weekly coach's show will air Sunday nights at 8 on the Sports Animal, will join Steve Duemig Wednesday afternoon. http://www.620wdae.com/localsportsstory.html?ID=20050824094608 Does that mean Jim Leavitt will be on with Duemig TODAY?
  15. The Fallout has begun: Top recruit’s coach: Player will reject UC By Dustin Dow Enquirer staff writer Bob Huggins’ forced exit from the University of Cincinnati is already having an effect on recruiting. Seven-foot-two center Jason Bennett will not commit to UC as originally planned, said his high school coach, Rex Morgan. A top 10 player at his position nationally in the 2006 class, Bennett was going to orally commit to the Bearcats soon, said Morgan, his coach at Arlington Country Day School in Jacksonville, Fla. “They now have no interest in Cincinnati,†Morgan said of Bennett and his family. “He was going there because of Huggins. Now, with the way Cincinnati handled everything, I hope no one goes there. He turned down Ohio State, Wake Forest, Connecticut two weeks ago. To say we’re disappointed is an understatement. The kid is devastated.†Nick Aldridge also was upset, but not to the point that he’ll write off Cincinnati completely. The 6-foot-6 power forward from South Webster, Ohio, has orally committed to Cincinnati, but withdrew that commitment today upon learning of the developments surrounding Huggins’ job. “Now I’ve got to look at other schools,†said Aldridge, who had planned to sign with Cincinnati in the fall. “The only way I will stay with Cincinnati is if coach (Andy) Kennedy gets the job or someone else that I like. I’m just really upset right now that coach Huggins is leaving.†Kennedy is expected to be named interim head coach for the upcoming season. “I thought Cincinnati would get Bennett,†said recruiting analyst Clark Francis. “You can forget that now. This really just set recruiting back a couple of years.â€Â
  16. Return Engagement One area in which the Buccaneers have made a really slow start this summer is punt return. Through two games, the Bucs have run back eight punts (with one fair catch) for a total of five yards. That’s an average of 0.6 yards per return…basically nothing. In addition, they’ve lost the ball on one of those returns, as cornerback Torrie Cox fumbled away a first-quarter punt last Saturday. Nevertheless, first-year wide receiver DeAndrew Rubin, a University of South Florida product, has made a positive impression in the return game. Some of that is due to his 42-yard return of a kickoff against the Jaguars, but Rubin also had two hard-nosed punt returns against Tennessee in the opener that were impressive despite gaining only seven total yards. It seems clear that the return job is Rubin’s best ticket to a roster spot this fall. He’s likely to get a few more chances Saturday in Miami. “He’s been doing it a long time,†said Special Teams Coach Rich Bisaccia, who knows of Rubin’s strong history in the return game at USF. “He’s seen a lot of those looks so obviously he’s got a chance to make the first guy miss. After that, we have to do a better job of protecting him and getting some blocks for him.†Cox, who ranked fourth in the NFL last year with a 26.2-yard average on kickoff returns, is getting a serious look at the other return job this year. It hasn’t started well for Cox – in addition to the fumble he also lost six yards on his first return in Tennessee – but he remains in the running, and he is almost sure to have an important job on the punt return team in some capacity. “I think Torrie’s definitely still in the mix,†said Bisaccia. “Torrie has to play corner for us, too, on the punt return team. We know Joey can go back there for us do it, and Torrie’s got to work at both corner and catching.†Bisaccia’s reference is to the X factor on the Bucs’ return squad: How much will they choose to use veteran receiver Joey Galloway? Last year, after missing the first half of the season with a groin injury, Galloway was used fairly regularly in that role, returning 20 punts for 142 yards and a touchdown. “Joey Galloway, I think, can lead the NFC in punt returns,†said Bisaccia. “He’s really fast, he can catch it, he’s played a long time…we’d be excited to have him back there.†Though the team has followed a somewhat limited practice schedule to increase Galloway’s chances of being healthy through the entire regular season, Bisaccia believes the veteran receiver would gladly take on the punt return job. At the very least, Galloway’s expertise will be useful on the practice field. “I think Joey’s been eager to do everything,†he said. “We lost Joey in the first game last year. Obviously, when he came back he made an impression on us with the return for a touchdown against New Orleans. Joey’s never shied away from anything. He catches them every day and he’s always working with the young guys back there.†http://www.buccaneers.com/news/newsdetail.aspx?newsid=4654
  17. There will be some TV games on the local affiliates of major networks as usual. I think ABC in Tampa usually has some of the games even if they aren't shown nationally. Aren't they tied in with ESPN regional? There was a press release about that, I think, several months ago. I know USF has a special relationship with ESPN regional and they televise at least x number of football games each year. In past years I think they had to get us six games on TV, but I'm not sure if that's changed.
  18. I know he was sick against St Louis: South Florida (10-11, 3-7) hopes leading scorer Terrence Leather is feeling better. Hampered by flu-like symptoms, the 6-foot-9 senior forward scored just three points in a 55-47 loss to Saint Louis on Wednesday. Leather paces the Bulls with 17.6 points per game, third-best in the conference. I also know that soon after Cincy played USF their whole team came down with the flu and they couldn't practice for one of their opponents.
  19. It won't be the first or last time somebody gets into early foul trouble in a game. It happens. Was that around the time when the players were all sick? There was one game where everybody had some kind of bug.
  20. More than 100 USF Athletic Events to be Broadcast in Creative Radio Alliance; Two Game Times Set (August 23, 2005) TAMPA, FLA. -- USF Athletics will enjoy its strongest radio coverage ever in the coming year through a creative blend of partners that provides for coverage of football and men and women's basketball games, plus coaches' call-in shows. Additionally, USF's volleyball, baseball and softball teams will have many of their games broadcast direct to internet. WFLA 970, a Clear Channel station, will serve as flagship for every USF football game. Additionally, USF football will be heard throughout Central Florida across the I-4 corridor with affiliates WORL 660 in Orlando and WHNR 1360 in Winter Haven. Each of USF's men's basketball games will be broadcast by a combination of Clear Channel family stations and WTBN AM 570 & 910 in the Tampa Bay market. WTBN has covered USF athletics since the 2003-04 season. WTBN AM 570 & 910 will also air all USF women's basketball games, marking the first time ever the program has enjoyed complete coverage of its schedule. An exact schedule of stations for men's basketball will be determined when dates are finalized for all games through the BIG EAST office. The Jim Leavitt Show will air Sundays following the Tampa Bay Buccaneer post-game show on WDAE 620 and the Robert McCullum Show will air weekly on WHNZ 1250. WDAE and WHNZ are Clear Channel sister stations with WFLA. "We've made a commitment to building a stronger partnership with our community as we head into the Big East Conference," says USF director of athletics Doug Woolard. "This new radio partnership is extremely exciting because it builds on our relationship with our fans, and at the same time strengthens our relationship with the business community. We're pleased to continue working with Salem Communications and WTBN, while at the same time adding a new partner with Clear Channel, and we're very appreciative of the cooperation we have received across the board to make this happen. "We're thrilled that this alliance will allow for more fans to hear USF action than ever before and that our women's basketball program will enjoy its best coverage ever. This is great news for everyone associated with USF Athletics." Dan DiLoreto, Regional Vice President/Market Manager Tampa, adds, "We're pleased to be bringing USF athletic events back home to WFLA, where the very first men's basketball games were broadcast in the early 1970s with our own Jack Harris. USF is a very important asset in our Tampa Bay community and we're pleased to partner with the athletic department as it makes its big move into the Big East Conference. Chris Gould, General Manager of Salem Tampa, the owner of WTBN, says, "Our partnership with USF has been a mutually satisfying one. We're happy to continue making it possible for our community to be able to hear USF events and we're especially proud of increasing awareness for USF's top-notch women's basketball program." In related news, Jim Louk, USF's assistant athletics director for sales and broadcasting, and the play-by-play voice for USF football, will add Director of Operations duties for the USF Radio Network. Louk and Mark Robinson will continue to call the USF football games, while Louk also continues as host of the Jim Leavitt Show. Louk and Robinson, a former NFL defensive back, have teamed on the radio broadcast since USF's 1997 Inaugural Season. Jim Lighthall enters his ninth season as the studio host for USF football. First Two USF Football Home Games Slated for 7 p.m. USF also announced today that the September 10 game against Florida A&M and the September 17 game against UCF will each begin at 7 p.m. The only other home game time set is the November 19 contest with Cincinnati, scheduled for 12 Noon. The game with UCF will be televised live by FSN Florida throughout the state. http://gobulls.usf.edu/Sports/News.asp?i=1701&s=Football

Denson signed with Auburn, but became disenchanted after being moved to cornerback.  ``I wanted to go somewhere I could play quarterback,'' Denson said. ``I knew I could play quarterback out of high school, but Auburn saw my athletic ability and switched me over to defense.''  The 5-foot-11, 198-pound Denson, who redshirted last season, received his release from Auburn, a Tigers spokeswoman said.  Denson was in the process of enrolling at USF's campus Monday and will have three years of eligibility beginning in 2005, the Bulls' first year in the Big East.  Denson will be the third SuperPrep All-American in USF's history, joining freshman cornerback Mike Jenkins and former offensive lineman Cedric Bell.  ``His heart is set on playing quarterback,'' Miami Central coach Anthony Saunders said. ``He was one of the top quarterbacks in the United States, but Auburn had a logjam at quarterback.  ``USF is getting a great athlete. He's a Brent Schaeffer- like quarterback.''  As a senior at Miami Central, Denson threw for 1,905 yards and 21 touchdowns and rushed for 615 yards and 12 TDs. He had more than 2,200 yards passing as a junior.  Before signing with Auburn, Denson considered Virginia Tech, USF, Nebraska and Rutgers. When Denson decided to leave Auburn, he said USF was his No. 1 choice.  ``I knew they wanted me as a quarterback, and it's closer to home, allowing my family to watch me play,'' Denson said.  The addition of Denson lessens the sting of losing out on several impact quarterbacks, including Deerfield Beach's Schaeffer (Tennessee), Hawthorne's Cornelius Ingram (Florida), Bradenton Southeast's Adrian McPherson (Florida State), St. Pete Catholic's Chris Davis (Florida State) and Clearwater Central Catholic's Jay Davis (N.C. State).  ``Courtney worked hard,'' Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville told the Montgomery (Ala.) Advertiser. ``It was just one of those things where he felt he needed to get closer back to his family. No problems there, but we hate to see him go.'' *** So, USF will have 3 Super-prep All-Americans on its roster to play next year. Not too shabby. Does any other team in the Big East have 3? How many does UCF have?  Nevermind. I know. Can we lock this thread NOW  ???
