  2. Quarterbacks fail to impress USF coaches By Times Staff Writers Times Wires TAMPA - After a three-hour, 119-play scrimmage in the 91 degree Saturday morning heat, this much is certain: There is no apparent starting quarterback for the Sept. 3 opener at Penn State. 3. All the right moves By GREG AUMAN Andre Hall, USF's star running back, approaches life like he does a game of chess, which he grew to love. Go to article Link isn't active yet at 1:05 AM http://www.sptimes.com/2005/08/21/Sports/All_the_right_moves.shtml
  4. Now he has you doing his research for him. I've learned better.  ;D
  5. When he was originally drafted he suffered an injury right before practice and he never got a real chance to show what he could do. I hope he sticks this time around.
  6. Well, Buie was a very highly touted recruit when he signed with us in 2004. He failed to qualify and enrolled at USF for the year and was now eligible. We expected he would play a significant role this year for us: INJURY UPDATE: Defensive end Jarriett Buie, a sophomore from Armwood who Tuesday broke his left fibula where it connects with the ankle, had surgery and will miss at least five games. "It's difficult (losing Buie)," said Leavitt, who also has safety Danny Verpaele (foot) and running back Ricky Ponton (shoulder) sidelined. "He's a great player and it just breaks your heart. He was going to play a lot of football for us." He was offered by: Florida, FSU, Iowa and Pitt among others, so you know he had to be pretty good:  http://usf.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?Sport=1&pr_key=21368
  7. We have our own problems. I presume you know about OUR injuries: USF already has lost starting FS Danny Verpaele (broken foot) and back-up DE Jarriett Buie (broken ankle) to injuries
  8. Even INGRAM didn't know which school he would attend when he went to bed. Anybody can LOOK like they know something if it happens to turn out correct. As to Carter, here is a flashback: Preps Spartan star picks Georgia Tech By JOHN C. COTEY, Times Staff Writer © St. Petersburg Times published January 14, 2003 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- When it comes to being recruited, everyone says you're great, can take the program to the next level and are the next great football player on your way to the NFL. What's a young kid to do? How about rely on "good vibes." Lakewood's Pat Carter did, and it was the primary reason the Spartan quarterback committed to Georgia Tech. The hotly recruited Carter, who vowed to take the recruiting process down to signing day, instead decided to commit to the Yellow Jackets in December after his visit to the Atlanta school "blew his mind," as well as other players visiting with him. "I had already seen the campus, but I was up there with some other players like (Jefferson's) Rashaun Grant and (Ridgewood's) Adamm Oliver," he said. "And we were all talking about how great it was and that we were really having great vibes. I told them, 'I'm committing tomorrow.' We all made the decision. "After I left that day, I wrote it in stone." Carter said he was impressed with former Dallas Cowboys coach Chan Gailey, now the Yellow Jackets coach. He liked the way practices were run and said he got along with the current players so well it felt like he had already been there for four years. Gailey told him he would play during his freshman season, Carter said. That was enough to persuade him to cancel a trip to Michigan, which said they were recruiting him as an athlete. "And that, basically, meant not playing quarterback," he said. Carter also canceled a trip to Florida and turned down offers from Purdue and Pittsburgh, the other schools he visited. A 6-foot-2, 180-pounder with 4.4 speed, Carter led Pinellas County in passing this past season with 1,888 yards in the regular season with 15 touchdowns. He also rushed for 248 yards and seven touchdowns while leading the Spartans to a district title and a 9-3 record. In 2001, he was Pinellas County's second-leading passer, throwing for 2,307 yards in 12 games with 21 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He guided the Spartans to their first two postseason victories, one in 2001 and another this past season. Recruiting analyst Bill Buchalter ranks Carter No.4 among Florida quarterbacks. Rivals100.com ranks him No.57 in the state overall. http://www.sptimes.com/2003/01/14/Sports/Spartan_star_picks_Ge.shtml

  10. A lot will depend on how big of an impact Buckley will have right from the start. With a versatile game, it is tough to shutdown Melvin Buckley on the court. Flashback: http://highschoolelite.com/news/7+21.html
  11. Well, it seems that the Chandler Parsons verbal to FSU might be a bit premature. Where have I heard that before? ;D http://www.breakdownmagazine.com/discusboard/messages/974/7972.html?1124539968

  13. College football USF sorts out roles today By Times Staff Writers Times Wires Published August 20, 2005 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TAMPA - USF will hold its only full scrimmage of the preseason today, with a few key starting positions on the line. "We're feeling pretty good about our first team," coach Jim Leavitt said . "That's about it. ... I know our quarterback situation. It's a two-man deal, with (freshman) Carlton ( Hill) getting a number of reps also." Junior Pat Julmiste and sophomore Courtney Denson will split reps today in what is now a close two-man race for the opening starting nod at quarterback. Leavitt said Hill will play at quarterback and/or receiver in the Sept. 3 opener at Penn State. "We're just trying to see how consistent we can be, get some first downs and move the chains," offensive coordinator Rod Smith said. With significant injuries to safety Danny Verpaele (foot) and defensive end Jarriett Buie (ankle), Leavitt said he'll hold out several starters to limit the risk of additional injuries. ONE STEP CLOSER: USF has received releases on two potential transfers, former North Carolina running back Vince Wilson of Daytona Beach and LSU receiver Amp Hill of Jacksonville. The Bulls are waiting for another transfer, N.C. State defensive end Maurice Charles, to be accepted by the university. THIS AND THAT: Freshman Paul Uhatafe, a Gibbs graduate, has moved to guard after one week at defensive tackle. ... Walk-on Colby Erskin of Seminole, after a week at defensive back, is back at running back, though he had a boot on his left foot Friday. - GREG AUMAN, Times staff writer http://www.sptimes.com/2005/08/20/Sports/USF_sorts_out_roles_t.shtml
  14. Welcome aboard Vince.  Bring your brothers too.  ;D Wilson Says He's USF-Bound By BRETT McMURPHY bmcmurphy@tampatrib.com Published: Aug 20, 2005 TAMPA - Sophomore Vince Wilson, who was North Carolina's No. 2 tailback until leaving UNC this month, said he will transfer to the University of South Florida. "I decided where I want to be is South Florida," said Wilson, whose release was sent to USF on Friday. "It's home, right here in Florida. When I visited South Florida my senior year at Daytona Beach Mainland, I really did like it. If I would have had an opportunity then, I would have gone to South Florida." However, Wilson did not meet college entrance requirements until months after February's signing day and he said USF didn't have any available scholarships. Wilson (5-foot-9, 203) must sit out the 2005 season and will have three years eligibility. USF coach Jim Leavitt would not comment on Wilson. SAFETY FIRST: Several starters will be held out today as a precautionary measure when the Bulls hold their only full scrimmage of the fall. USF already has lost starting FS Danny Verpaele (broken foot) and back-up DE Jarriett Buie (broken ankle) to injuries. "I feel good about our first team," Leavitt said. "The scrimmage will help solidify some positions." Junior QB Pat Julmiste and sophomore Courtney Denson remain even in the battle to win the starting position, but Leavitt said freshman Carlton Hill also is looking good. RETURN GAME: Leavitt said sophomores Jackie Chambers and Amarri Jackson will handle punt returns and Chambers, senior Andre Hall, sophomores Trae Williams and Mike Jenkins and freshman Taurus Johnson are in the mix for kickoff returns. RULE CHANGE: Citing last year's hit on Tennessee Tech WR Drew Hixon by USF CB Mike Jenkins and FS Javon Camon, the NCAA has changed the rule on spearing. No longer is "intent" needed for the penalty, USA Today reported. The new rule says spearing is the use of the helmet or face mask "to butt or ram an opponent or attempt to punish him." Against USF, Hixon was knocked unconscious by a legal hit and sustained life-threatening head injuries, but he has since fully recovered. "That play really helped us go in and lobby the NCAA and we changed the spearing rule," said Georgia's director of Sports Medicine Ron Courson, who led the NCAA's offseason task force. http://bulls.tbo.com/bulls/MGB1AOUCLCE.html Vince Wilson  Class: Freshman Hometown: Daytona Beach, Fla. 15. I like "Flip the Bird" better, but some people might misconstrue its meaning.
  16. McElwain was the enforcer when he played hockey, so it's no wonder he brings the same attitude to football.
  17. They didn't sell out last year when they averaged only 103,000 game. We should only be so lucky.
  18. Oh,i I just realized that the NCAA recently voted to ALLOW 12 games, so Brett is accurate. So, we could still schedule 1- home and 1- away to get to six each. There goes my theory. ;D
  19. Remember we had only five home games this year. Every other BE team has at least six. We already have five away games scheduled for 2006. We need home games to get us to six. It's more than likely that Minn wanted us to play the first game there and we aren't in a position to do that. That's just a guess. Maybe I'm missing something but I count 10 games ALREADY scheduled and we only need one, not two as was reported in the Trib: 2006 Out Of Conference H Sept. 2  Fla. International A Sept. 16 at UCF A Sept. 23 at North Carolina Conference: H Connecticut H Pittsburgh H Rutgers H Syracuse A at Cincinnati A at Louisville A at West Virginia  Is that correct?
  20. I don't think we'll end up playing both of those UF games. I know Leavitt doesn't want us to schedule any more "pay" games and he can't be too happy having them away two years in a row. I think we'll put the Miami game in one of those years instead. That's just a hunch.
  21. You know, if Hashim "Big City" Bailley hears that we have a boxing class here he might decide not to enroll next year at Memphis and come here as he originally planned. My money is on Hashim over Maurice! ;D
