A rival is somebody you hate that you compete against. We obviously hate UCF so thats why its a rivalry. Nobody uses a rivalry to propel their team. Its simply about beating that team on the field and having better success overall on the field. UCF simply took care of business and we didnt. Another team's success has nothing to do with us. The UF, UM and FSU rivalries grew because BOTH sides were having success and the rivalries were 2 determine who wil have even more success.

    Wrong .. but that's fine

Yes it had a trophy that Uconn proceeded to leave on the sideline when they won because they had self respect and new just because someone is thirsty to capitalize on you doesn’t mean you have to buy into it. And no it wasn’t on the list either because no one cares about the random forced “rivalries” UCF tried to throw at anyone and everyone with us being the only ones dumb enough to buy into it, sad.

It pains me to read this and think about how those a**clowns used that administration.   Almost makes me wonder if they were actually who orchestrated the whole "slap gate"

A fact of business is that you’re measured against your competition. They became legitimate competitors and won; we didn’t. Even with our best team in recent memory. I can’t get but hurt (long-term) over that. I can only support and hope that we do beat them. The best measuring stick of that would be to continue to compete with them.

I hate where we are at the moment but I don’t take issue with the rivalry as a sorely as many do. As you all can see, this topic elicits the emotion that feeds legitimate rivalries. Which I believe proves the merit in my opinion.

    You completely miss the point

Let me spell it out even more clearly for the people that wanted to sell our programs soul for no apparent reason because they thought it’s fun to play people that are close. McDonald’s never associated with or acknowledged BK regularly because you have nothing to gain by attaching your brand to the people below you and Coke didn’t do regular Pepsi taste tests and associate their brand with them because once again that doesn’t advance them but Pepsi sure did because associating with the people ahead of you is good and below you is bad. The bore on I-4 single handedly destroyed our advancement and I hope you enjoyed it for whatever sick reason but the only good thing about having been left behind is that nonsense is over and it’s over because forcing a rivalry with your closest competitor who is a league below you is dumb and if you like the bore on I-4 having just witnessed what happened you are too stupid to survive in life and that we keep you alive despite all your best efforts to die is the reason we stopped evolving.

I remember those FSU/FAMU rivalry games

    TWO DECADES OF PULLING RANK

The Bulls will face several ranked teams in 2021. Since becoming a full FBS program in 2001, USF has registered 11 victories against opponents ranked in the Associated Press top 25 (including three wins against the top 10, four road victories and triumphs against opponents from the ACC, Big 12 and SEC). In that 20-season span, only two other American Athletic Conference programs have more victories against ranked opponents than USF.

AAC Team Top 25 Wins* Top 10 Wins* *Since 2001

    Cincinnati 17 2

    Houston 12 4

    USF 11 3

    UCF 7 3

Even with our crappy recent run we are still ahead of those a**wipes.

You can't ask faculty if they think millions should be spent to build a football palace and not expect this answer. If you found a faculty member who said "Yes!" they'd be instantly ostracized. There are always going to be funding challenges on the academic side that need to be addressed. If your goal was to completely fund everything every academic program on campus would ever need, then you should just shutter your athletic program altogether. It's a silly question to ask that constituency. You got that same answer 26 years ago when we launched the football program. They never consider the spillover the university receives in other areas - enrollment, fundraising, etc. - when you have a successful and visible athletic program.

Good point.   They should take a look around the campus and that endowment and thank CJL and the football program every day.

Exactly. For better or worse (as much as we hate it), it’s near a match made in heaven/hell. I’m confused by the pushback against acknowledging that.

I’ll caution the old saying: “You never know what you have until it’s gone”.

The push backs are because we blew past them and left them in our dust as we zoomed to the Big East.  The push back is because we were trying to establish a rivalry with legitimate programs like a Miami or maybe Big East teams like a WVU, Louisville, etc.   The push back is that even then CJL took some heat because he didn't want to settle for a rivalry with a middling program like ucf.  We were trying to move onward and upward, but some would rather try and create this "rivalry" with those guys that was allegedly going to propel us along with them to the promised land ..... well we see how that turned out now didn't we.

So nothing notable his first year?

Right! The Rays knew this all year never upgraded starting pitching. It was destined to fail.

That's not what he was saying.  He was commenting on Shane being brought out of the pen instead of starting the game.  They tried to upgrade the starting pitching from within with Rasmussen, Patino and Baz

Sox been doing that all year though. Long patches of nothing over multiple games then six or seven games in a row where they get knocks throughout a game. Rays still have the bats and I’ve seen our bullpen melt like butter in more than a few games. It’s not over.

You are not mistaken. They went from D3, to D2, to FCS. Although it gave them a foundation, I really don’t think it did much to get them a B12 invite. Football on those lower levels were really “Mickey Mouse” back then.

Correct.  I'm sure it helped build a foundation, but if anything us passing right by them and into the Big East lit a fire under them and propelled them to get serious about the program.   Kind of like their invite to the Big 12 appears to be doing for us ... we hope
