we cant do better?
We've had 4 coaches in a row now end their tenures here by being fired. Sure we have nice facilities but at a certain point it is a risk to take a job that has a track record of ending careers.
Getting a guy that has shown he can rebuild a program through recruiting high school kids and not turning over the roster each season may be just what we need.

I feel like this is too soon to ask this question. We need to see what happens with CAAR and recruiting/transfers/departures. Maybe circle back right before start of Football.
However, I have to lean towards football just because we have some established Offense (even with departures). Improvement on Defense (literally a stop here or there) would have improved our record last year. I am not an optimist here or hyped but there is no **** way that defense can be as bad as they were for the past 3-4 years. The team would randomly step up against good teams like Florida, UCF, Houston, and Cincy. Then go and get the doors blown off by mediocre teams like ECU and Tulane.
I think that inconsistency is a sign of bad coaching. And with a good coach we should be able to play to the same level every time we hit the field.

This is a trick question lol. I honestly can’t decide right now lol
because you have confidence in both or neither?

Do you have more faith in Alex Golesh to turn things around or Amir Abdur Rahim?

Man knows how to recruit

I really really hope he works out and the first step is if he can get the core guys to not enter the portal. With all that being said, based on his resume and where we are at we really need a win now coach, I’m not saying he won’t do that but he hasn’t proved that in the short time he has been a head coach. He could of had a lucky year for all we know. He has a horrible career record. We are the only school that probably would of hired him.
I hope both the new basketball and football coach are successful. I still think the AD has to go he is a joke.
After his first year he had the #1 recruiting class in their conference. His 3rd year there they only won 13 games but that was still the best team in their programs history according to kenpom up to that point.
It wasn't luck, and it wasn't just 1 year. He had the two best years in their teams history, they just were that historically bad before he got there.
-
Sure his 4th year is the only impressive year on his resume, but i don't think people understand how bad of a team he turned around. Even his 3rd year there was the highest kenpom rating in Kennessaw State history.
Taking over a team thats never had a winning record and having their 2 best seasons ever in years 3 and 4 is no fluke
-
He was recruiting to a team that never in their programs history had a winning record and they played in this gym. with more resources here the rebuild should be quicker

Better then Antigua; probably, but that's a low bar.
Wasn't able to recruit that type of player when HC at Kennesaw, so we don't know why that player decided to go to Georgia.
Huge risk. Yes they were better every year but that's starting from a 1-28 record. There are so many HC coaches with better resumes over a longer period of time.
Give me this guy over Bob Richey or anyone who's never rebuilt a program. Taking over a team in a dumpster fire is different than taking over a 20 win team and keeping things going

This is the guy who recruited Anthony Edwards to Georgia too.
Getting the #2 overall player in the country to come to a school not known for basketball success and coming off an 11 win season is pretty impressive. Should translate better than Orlando Antigua's recruiting at Kentucky
-
Cal's AD asked Jaylen Brown for his thoughts on who they should hire and this is who he recommended.

lets compete in our own conference before worrying so much about moving too a tougher one. At this point i'll take just being a premier G5 program

He built up a bad team. I say go for it!!!!
Kennessaw State had never had a winning record in their programs history when he got there, and by year 4 he wins a conference championship and almost knocks off a 3 seed in the tourney.
People see overall losing record and ignore the context of the situation. Taggart had a losing record here, but you'd be kidding yourself to pretend his tenure wasn't successful

Better option then Capko but Richard Pitino doesn't inspire confidence. At Minnesota had a 54-96 conference record. At New Mexico had a 13-22 conference record . In 10 years of coaching at Minnesota and New Mexico only once over .500 in conference.
Would be a below average hire. What about Richey from Furman?
Richey has been successful and I could be sold on him. But only being an assistant at Charleston Southern, then Furman, then taking over a Furman team that won 20+ games and keeping them successful makes me nervous.
Feel like Jeff Scott's issue was he had only ever really been at one place and never had to take part in a rebuild before.

- At the age of 30 took over an FIU team that hadn't had a winning record in 12 years, went 18-14 in his only year there.
- Coached in the Big 10 at Minnesota from the ages of 31-38. Had an overall record of 141–123, made the postseason 3 times, but only had a winning record in conference once.
- Took over a 6-16 team, went 13-19 in year 1, and then 22-12 year 2 and made the NIT at New Mexico.
Thoughts? Struggling so much in conference play at Minnesota causes concern, but it could be that a 31 year old kid was just in over his head at the BIG 10. He seems to have bounced back nicely though and has some consistency turning around a mid major pretty instantly
-
In football he publicly wanted Jamey Chadwell, but got beat out by Liberty. Ended up with a candidate just good enough to sell the fanbase on.
In basketball he wanted Mike Brey, got beat out by TV. Then he wanted Ryan Odom and got beat out by VCU.
I'm sure he'll find somebody better than Capko that can get our hopes up. But its crazy how consistently embarrassing these searches are getting for the University

Grant McCasland could feel like a hire that isn't a total whiff

If it wasn't for a stadium on the way I feel like the majority of the fanbase would be calling for Kelly's job already, and I'm not unconvinced that coming has more to do with Weatherford than Kelly

Can you imagine what this board will be like if that happens?
that would rival the sweeping extensions for most egregious thing Michael Kelly has done

At this point it seems we are waiting for something. Is it related to waiting for Odom's buyout to decrease ( or whatever that situation), or is it a coach that is still in a tournament.
Looking at the NIT, UAB, North Texas, and Utah Valley State are still playing. Kennedy the UAB coach would be a great get. But I doubt that happens
The coach of Utah Valley State is Mark Madsen. Really one great year and that's it. I really hope he is not the one we are waiting for.
Rothstein has reported he's going to Cal. I think its gotta be Odom, but if the VCU job opens up that'll scare me.

@bulloni Where exactly is a Utah State message board? I could not find one on the 2 main sites for USF.
Wow, and I thought USF got poor coverage!

If Kelly pulls this off that would be a hell of a rebound from the Mike Brey fiasco. Since Odom became a D1 coach he has a better record and the same # of tourney appearances as Brey at schools with way less prestige.
