While interesting to see other's perceptions on this subject, I would be hard pressed to pick since there were games which his passing was exceptional and others where he had to make yardage with his feet.

While many could also point out specific victories over very good opponents, I have to say I personally was most impressed with his first game action given that it was unexpected.  It was no secret that USF had been less than stellar at the QB position after Blackwell's playing days were done.  Grothe came in for an injured Julmiste with the team trailing McNeese St. in the 3rd. Things seemed a little grim not just for that game but for the upcoming season.  Grothe came in and instantly started directing players where they needed to be and confidently calling the signals. He took the leadership role right away which is not always easy for a young guy.

The most I had known about Grothe before he took the field for the first time was actually ET touting him as the future QB.

He wasn't unexpected in my book...I watched his film and I was impressed...I never understood some recruiting "experts" that didn't think he was that talented...

If it is open to the public... BYU could literally, and with no effort have anyone even marginally, film the game from the stands and the whole cloak and dagger shenanigans are blown out of the water. It would take about $25 and a couple of hot dogs from the concession to get someone to do it. This is just a "blackout" to get people to RJS. Call it what it is.

And I'm fine with that. My personal preference is for streaming, but I understand why it isn't being streamed. I just don't like the lame excuse.

    Agreed...this doesn't add up...

    not so fast

we played against a frshman qb that was horrible but better than our freshman qb

Fair...that was about as impressive performance that any coordinator could give though...and you've seen our defense with the same players all year no? If Spencer was still coaching tonight's game would've been 35-13...count it...and he would've blamed the same players...

First off, I am confused why the defense is suddenly getting clutch tackles and going well after 1 week of a D coordinator change.  I am going to leave that one on the table, because I don't understand.  Let us turn our attention to the offense.  I am taking the QB factor out of it.  McClain played great this year.  That doesn't mean he will automatically improve next year of course.

    • Red Zone has been a confusing debacle dating back to the NC State game.  It is enough that I notice all the time.  For example, getting that goal line play in late while Timmy was yelling for a play could have been the difference in today's game.  Sometimes it seems that we get down there and do not know what to do.
    • We have several playmakers that are fast and have made big plays, but cannot get them the ball in space.
    • We seem to have excellent RBs, but utilize them inconsistently.
    • We tend to drive the ball sometimes, then get cute and do some wonky thing.

What do you think is the culprit?  Is this as simple as a green Offensive Coordinator?  If the HC doesn't call the plays, is this really on the HC?

Let me answer your first sentence...Spencer put the players in terrible positions and the players GAVE UP ON THE GUY...when you basically say you don't have faith in the players, the players will eventually say "F you pal" 100% of the time...as for the game you just watched, the play calling was absolutely fine...Timmy made a ton of bad decisions...the hope is that he will improve...I personally think he will..

If that is correct than we are better off going into next year.  I can't understand how stupid the offensive strategy turtles when we get down the field though.

It's funny because Timmy cost us this game with the incorrect reads, but also made a ton of great plays to almost win the game...he'll get better with experience
