  1. I'd like to say that even though I'm not the biggest fan of this hire, I'm now behind Harlan 110%. I think of this like the start of conference play in football-what's the past is the past, it's a new season now and we have a new chance to make things ours.

Will I be upset if he messes up? yes. But is he the right hire? Well, if Dr. Genshaft and the committee believe he is, then we're not in a position to judge. Mark Harlan's record at USF is 0-0. He has done nothing wrong here. He's also done nothing right.

I pray for him, because this is one of the toughest jobs in America right now. USF is currently in a major backslide. FSU and Miami are resurgent, and make no mistake, Florida will be back. We are behind that program to the east, woefully behind. I do not envy Harlan's position as he attempts to rebuild USF athletics.

Harlan walks into a situation with massive debt, rather high coaching salaries, currently noncompetitive major sports,  and a reduced revenue forecast for the foreseeable future. He also has great Olympic facilities, a nice state to live in, and a fair weather community that will pack Raymond James Stadium and the Sun Dome if we win.

Make no mistake-he believes he can fix this, and that perhaps is the biggest thing. I patient won't die until he decides he can't live anymore. We're not dead yet. We can still be that famous dragon slayer, that beautiful green and gold school in the sun.

Mark Harlan, it is your time, you can make it happen.

    GO BULLS!

  2. I liked this quote about academics by Harlan: "The coaches have something very powerful. It's called the bench. The sideline." I agree also that Steven Bench is very powerful too.

This quote about five years from now too "I think we're going to be cutting down some nets."

  3.

Blew it at the end.... as usual

    Go USF!

Lets be fair, just because MBB has been loosing games with big leads, this wasn't a USF team choking. The women had a huge senior class last year that lead them to the most successful season in program history.

We needed to beat UL for a shot at the NCAA's, we came up just short. So in our rebuilding year we were 19-12 heading into the WNIT,

and my answer to that-why can't we make the NCAAT? We've kept improving all season and we showed we can hang with a likely 1-seed.

  4.

Let's hope it's not for bball but for fundraising, facilities, and donor increases.

He worked football at a couple of his previous stops, it's not like the schools he came from had small-time football programs.

I'm done with facilities.  That's Doug's claim to fame for the last decade.

    Real priorities:

Re-establish a commitment to winning - change the culture on Fowler

    Hold coaches accountable

Re-position marketing away from the cute stuff and on to getting the community back on board

Speak to a vision for USF Athletics and make it happen

But without the cute stuff, how will Coach T drive his bus? On publix subs and wings?

  5. It's not so much the Bruins Nation article, even if they aren't all that professional (I guess we're mentally comparing them to their Voodoo Five counterparts, whose opinion we sometimes have a tendency to value very highly).

No, my bother is the buyout he gave to Steve Alford prior to doing NOTHING at UCLA. I mean, you're going to pay the man 10.4M USD to fire him if he fails in three years and 5.2M if they fire him before 2018. Never mind that Alford is getting paid $2.6M a year regularly. Coaches who win at UCLA don't leave UCLA. It's like Saban and Alabama-they would have to fire Saban to make him leave, he proved this year that not even the money of Texas will entice him. If you win at UCLA, you stay there and make millions of dollars. Not only that, Alford is getting paid MORE than Roy Williams and Jim Boeheim, coaches who Alford isn't even the stratosphere of in terms of coaching ability. If that doesn't reek of the height of idiocy, I don't know what does.

Maybe his fund raising is good. I like that he did good fund raising at Arizona, which while a P5 program, has never been top shelf in the Pac-12. That took some talent. But that can't be the be-all end-all. Donors don't donate to losing teams, unless they're clearly getting better. At our level we are dependent on people showing up the stadium to make money. I remember reading somewhere that the 2007 WVU game made 1.3M or so (I may be low balling it) in ticket sales. We're not likely to reach that point again, but even if we have 50k a year in the stands, I'd say we have a good shot of making $8-10M a year in ticket sales, and people WILL donate if they see us winning-and the top 40 recruiting classes will keep coming, perhaps even better .Same goes for basketball.

As for the secret search-I have no problem with it. This is an executive level search. It's probably fair to keep the, say, Iron Bulls informed if they ask. But who else has the level of financial committment to the university? Moreover, why do the coaches need to be in? The AD is their boss. If they win, the AD won't have a problem with them. If they lose, taht's that.

  6. I like the hire if the rumors are true. Harlen's strength and background is fund raising and basketball. Both areas USF will need to improve in. This is very much a move to quickly try and fix the basketball program first which is obviously priority #1 for any AD given USF"s current situation.

That's nice, but the jury is still out on Taggart. What. if. he. fails? Woolard obviously didn't know what he was doing with Holtz and it's questionable a guy like Harlan will if he's looking for a new football coach? That's the bread and butter, now more so than ever.

We need to mass email that link to Dr. Genshaft. If it's Harlan we have to derail him ASAP.

It's 3 years old and on a blog, SB Nation. And people talk about me sending a link to the top (MVP) AAAAAA QB in GA to CWT. Geesh.

I'm from California (born in Redondo Beach) and I can give you someything to grip onto but this is definitely NOT the guy.  I know alot about this bottom dweller and if he's the guy.....................I'll eat my own ******* hat.  This guys toast or we have retards running USF Admin.

I sincerely want you to be right. Joe Parker seems like a great hire-he's not perfect but he seems pretty **** good and he comes from a football loving background.

    Harlon just reeks to me.

I never particularly was for or against Ironsides.

Such things pop up for me and they're alarm bells. You shouldn't have such negative press to begin with. Even as bad as Woolard is, has he ever gotten bad press?

  9. NC State is easily the most winnable P5 game on our schedule next year. They were 3-9 last year and lost their last 8 games, and allowed 38 points or more in their last four games.

Not saying we're much better, but at least we closed the gap against other teams at the end of the year. Downside? They had a good recruiting class, same ball park as ours at #37 on ESPN, but their top players were better in class than ours-and they signed 32 of them.

Maryland will be a notch up on the difficulty level. They were 7-5 and nearly beat #9 Clemson at one point. Only reason they weren't ranked is because they looked like an FCS team against FSU-and there were plenty of teams that looked like FCS programs against FSU last year.

I like how the difficulty level rises in non conference. The first two are winnable, I'll be happy if we start 2-0. If we go 3-0 then this team is likely a legit contender for the access bowl slot.
