1. I didn't see the game so I won't comment on it. The A-10 is a mid-major conference on a par with C-USA before the realignment. K. Hobbs is 4-7 against BCS schools since the 03-04 season. This is what I would expect from a mid-major team. This would not be a bad choice, unlike RMC who came from a conference that is on a par with the Horizon league and the Sun-belt. If we go mid-major the MVC, A-10, Mountain West and WAc are the conferences just below the BCS conferences on a regular basis. There is where we would make our best choices. Also, forget about Lowery, according to reports he's headed to Minnesota (no I don't know the reliability of this).
2. Don't worry BullDoug, I'm in so you can't finish last, I usually own that position. ;D
3. I just looked up the numbers, There must have been some internal thing. The program had been languishing prior to his arrival and had academic and legal problems (sound familiar) His last season he was 16-12 and third in A-10, 2-0 against top 25.
4. I don't see the problem. Unless your classes get out real late drive up on Friday night, maybe get a hotel room in Tallahassee or some place similar and complete the drive the next morning. FTI the game is supposed be a 5 pm game for ESPN, which is why the game was moved in the first place..
5. This could be interesting. Since he coached at Manhattan, UMass, and Nova he is familiar with working with a limited budget, non-charter flights, etc. I'm not sure he would be a long term solution but he could very well be the 4-5 year coach that moves the program forward. Just for general information he tends to use a dribble penetration and three point shooting game in the half court and the press on defense. Think of Illinois of a couple years ago (03,04, and 05) for the style that he plays. I think that its well suited for florida athletes.
6. Just what I was thinking, my analogy would have been Sam Wyche, they set the table but couldn't get the ingredients right for the dinner. I hope that DW gives MAC a good recommendation. MAC was a stand up guy.
7. The NCAA pays out for the Dance to the conference who then pays the schools, additional revenues from the NCAA are paid straight. I do not know how the BE pays out its tourney money but I think it is prabably close to how the Big Ten pays out theirs. In the B10 The moneys from the tourney are pooled and then shared by the teams with incentives for performance. For example let us say that 5 B10 schools make the NCAA tourney. Indiana bounces out in the second round, Illinois in the first round, Michigan State in the second round Ohio State Makes the Final four, and Wisconsin bounces out in the fourth round. The B10 would then take its total amount and divide by 25 units (11 B10 schools + 5 first round games + 4 second round games + 2 third round games + 2 fourth round games + 1 final four) The schools are then paid by their performance one unit for being a B10 school + 1 unit for every round of the tourney that you compete in. So under this scenaio Ohio State would receive the most and non - tourney teams receive the least. The NCAA payouts are based on units that were derived from previous perfomance of the conference over the previous six years, thus this years performance will not be reflected in NCAA payouts until next year. One unit is awarded for each game in the tourney over the previous six years final four appearances count as one unit, no units are awarded for the championship. Each unit this year is worth $163,981 to each conference . The BE has about 83 units for this years tourney (If I counted right) Which would be about $13 million from the mens tourney, total NCAA payouts will be higher due to other non- NCAA mens tourney factors. The Big East should expect a toal of about $25 millio for all sports from the NCAA this year.
8. 2006 -07 numbers will not be available until August or September of 2007.
9. Event Revenue sources come from http://usfweb2.usf.edu/bpa/OB/05-06/05-06_Operating_Budget.pdf Athletic sources for expenses and revenues come from: http://ope.ed.gov/athletics/search.asp Where you can also search other colleges and schools. Just for other knowledge Big East listing of athletic expenditures (in millions): Notre Dame $55.5 Connecticut $49.9 Louisville 45.1 Syracuse 41.3 Rutgers 41.0 West Virginia 39.1 Pittsburgh 33.1 Cincinnati 28.9 Saint Johns 24.4 South Florida 24.3 Georgetown 23.6 Villanova 21.5 Marquette 19.5 Seton Hall 15.0 Providence 13.7 Depaul 13.1 Of the 331 schools in DIA BB USF ranks 78 overall and 97 in BB.
10. I was using Brett's information on the salary figures perhaps I misread it. :-?
11. The USF Revenue sources are not listed with detail on which sports generate which amount by type of revenue. We do know that event revenues, which exclude football, was $1,345,610 in the 05-06 season. Which was an increase of $240,410 over the 04-05 seasons. This event revenue includes all sports other than football which is separated out under equity compliance rules. However, Rutgers University, which is comparable to USF in size and athletic facilities and team proformance does hae 3 times as much basketball revenue and 30% hgiher football revenue. So the revenue potential is there.
12. RMC contract is a guaranteed contract and the total amount must be paid by April 15, 2009. Even when we spread out the payout over the next two years we will have an additional $200,000 cost to pay a coach who is no longer here and $400,000 to $500,000 to pay for a new head coach for a total increase in the budget of $700 - 800 thousand . Even with a new coach bringing in additional revenues through donations, ticket slaes and TV revenues that is more than can be reasonable expected. This also assumes that we do not icrease our recruiting budget or make any capital improvements to the basketball facilities. I just can't see how we can make the numbers work. The safest financial course to take is to keep RMC, although that will mean another year in the dregs. We also have to consider that RMC has three very talented recruits coming in, firing him will probably cost us those recruits setting the building (not rebuilding since we never built in the first place) of the program back by at least one year.
13. Here is some more budget numbers for you: Revenues Football: $8,828,336 MBB: $2,845,336 WBB: $343,243 Total (all sources) : $25,843,846 Expenses: Football: $6,668,203 MBB: $1,983,566 WBB: $1,303,645 Total (all expenditures): $24,340,601 Since it cost USF $1,000,000 to leave CUSA and $2,500,000 for USF to join the BE the $1.5 million in profit is probably being used to pay off those costs. When you consider the small amount of total budget that is used for men's basketbal it makes financial sense for USF to keep RMC until after April 15, 2008. At that time the buyout for RMC will only be $100,000 which would represent a savings to the University of $300,000 in hte buyout. In addition the payments to the Big East and CUSA will also come to an end at that time, providing the resources neede to upgrade the MBB program.
14. Using Info from Real Time RPI. Has USF Men's BB improved under RMC?

YearW-LRPISOS BY[br] RPIOpp RPI[br] - WinsOPP PRI[br] - LossW-L RPI[br] Above USFW- L PRI [br]Below USF

20047-20221182193.7182.055-202-0

200513-16201145211.69108.813-1410-2

20067-2223674207.7191.274-193-2

200712-1818792236.575.893-179-1

The evidence suggests that there has been no impovement over the past four years. However, the evidence also suggests that there is no room in the budget for the replacement. Using 2005-06 numbers filed with the Department of Education for gender equity requirements, USF's Men's basketball budget was $1,983,566 or 8% of the total athletic budget. The buyout for RMCs contract would be about 20% of the entire mens basketball budget.
15. Just looked to see how Coach Gregory's record as OC stacks up. This information is derived from CFB Data Warehouse. He coached against teams that were much beter than his (Ohio v Florida) and some that weren't as good. BUt his overall record at each school as OC: Richmond 27 pts per game Ohio 24 pts per game overall 31 pts in conference Army 24.5 pts per game including Army's only bowl in last 20 years Missouri Southern - First Head coach, 24 pts per game. Remarkably consistent, his record indicates that he favored the running game (60%) but that may have been inflenced by his talent level. Overall he has gotten good results, its hould be interesting to see how he adjusts to being the OC in a BCS conference.
